if you want to stop unwanted firms telephoning you any hour of the day trying to "market research" / sell you stuff then its free and easy to stop. it's a govt. run scheme and the sellers have to abide by it.
if you google (tps)"telephone preference service" usually first hit go on there and within 5 mins you've registered and within 28 days all unwanted calls will cease (actually within a few days we noticed less had called and within 10 days they've is a blessing especially when you work shifts etc.
theres also a scheme to stop unwanted mail coming through your door which is my next mission.
Yup I've had that service for years and don't get any unwanted calls whatsoever.
It only covers UK based companies, it does help reduce it but you still get one or two.

i tell them i am in a rented flat they cannt get off the phone fast enuff lol
I just tell them i am the baby sitter and can i take a message....
the worst was when we lived in our old house that used to belong to my parents and they would ask for them even though filled out all the forms after they died...
call center people can't get off the phone fast enough if you tell them the person they want is dead!!!!
Dave used to think it harsh but after many calls you do get a tad fed up with it!!!
I just listen to them, then tell them that the householder isn't available at the moment and that I'm a bailiff.
If they knock at the door, I open it and listen to the spiel, then ask why I should buy anything off an illiterate. When they say they CAN read, I ask them why they didn't read the NO COLD CALLING sign outside the village.
I have a number of ways to deal with cold calls.
If I have dragged myself out of bed to the door I say "No thank you." Shut the door and hope they have not had a chance to step back.
If I have more time I really show interest, ask all those questions they do not know the answer to. Then ask "Does it come in...?" Then when they say "No" I say "Oh, no not if it does not come in...!" ...but I only dod that if they do not take a simple no.
I say to them that I will listen to them and when I get bored, I'll hang up.
So a few seconds later I say, 'I'm getting bored now' and promptly hang up.
Hardly ever hear from them again.
If you have registered to have these calls stopped you may still get the odd one or two. If you do, all you need to say is "Under section 11 of the UK Data Protection Act, this call is illegal". If they still carry on, ask to speak to their manager and say the same thing and insist your number is removed from their database.
I'm usually so grateful for any call I try to make polite conversation, but for some reason they hang up when I ask what they're wearing
we both have mobile phones and rarely used our landline ( except for cold callers) so we cancelled the phone line, but when they used to ask for the home owner we used to say" just a minute and i'l go get her" and then leave the phone on the side for half an hour.
I once had one and she was very abrupt when I said I wasnt interested before she had even had chance to tell me what she was selling and she hung up.....I was so mad that I rung it back and gave her what for!!!!
A tip for all the junk mail you recive is to tear the form up and put in the prepaid envelope and post it back to them, this way it costs them the money for the postage and you dont have to worry about people rumaging through your paperbin and getting credit cards in your name
