Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Highway Star - Deep Purple (Made In Japan version)
La Villa Strangiato - Rush
Escaping The Fools Spiritual Beggers
That's off the top of my head. I could think of many more given a few minutes.
You do not get much better than this
It's gotta be Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond for me. Mind blowing!
Very difficult to choose just one but Peter Geen is my all time favourite guitarist so would plump for The Supernatural.
That kerchunk in creep by whoever it was by at the end oth verses. I like that a lot and without it the song just wouldnt work.

It's Jonny Greenwood. I once read somewhere that it was a mistake. He came in too early, but the producer thought it worked so well, he kept it in.
Steve Diggles' guitar solo in Boredom by the Buzzcocks is everything a guitar solo should be....
I think I agree that It's 'How Soon Is Now', though I have a soft spot for the two note solo in 'Boredom' by The Buzzcocks - mainly because it's the only one I can play accurately myself...
(edit) - great minds, Staggerlee :}
Ace Frehley's solo in "2000 Man" takes some beating, just for use of pyrotechnics alone!
I have just discovered Joe Bonamassa. he's pretty good.
and so far not a mention of Hank Marvin dunno lol
I am a lover of rock and the usual suspects of Page and Hendrix. But this guy is just soooo good.
Listen to the song, all the way through.....amazing.
As none of you will have probably heard my mate Jeff play (he's jaw dropping good but just plays for pleasure- he plays left handed, right handed, cross handed and with the guitar unpside down...just to make it a bit more challenging)....
I shall instead throw in a wildcard for the title. David Gedge of The Wedding Present, maybe not the most technical player but bloody good live and very entertaining to watch/listen to. check out the 6ish minute solo on this. Go Gedgy and keep wearing the black shorts lol
or feature high on my list....
I'm really not in the best possition to judge guitarists as I can't stand long solo's and perfect form. I like Jeff Lewis and Kimya Dawson and Crass, and early synthpop done on dilapidated old moogs fed through guitar distortion pedals. I wouldn't know a virtuoso guitar solo if one bit my face off.
I also hate singers who yodel as if to say, 'I have a three octave range and I can do them all in one song.' That's why I can't even watch X Factor, just in case some yodelling bint comes on.
Give me ineptitude, and this to illustrate:

I has no taste biggrin

Difficult one. My favourites :
1) Louis Stewart playing Straight no Chaser from the album "I thought about you"
2) Joe Pass playing Joysprings from the album "Virtuoso vol 3"
3) Steve James playing Bachelor Blues From "Two Track Mind"
4) Elizabeth Cotton's version of Vestapol

Ditto......but I have immaculate taste...so one of us is wrong and I doubt it's me
:}
I shall bow to the fact that you clearly have excellent taste, and therefore so must I :>
voodoo child (slight return): The jimi hendrix experience. album 1968 electric ladyland.
Hendrix was without doubt the greatest guitar player who has ever the greats including eric clapton said hendrix had something no other player had.
other guitar greats would turn up just to see jimi play and listen to his overdriven amp with high gain and trebles.
also responsible for making the wah-wah pedal popular the style of playing and sound will never be repeated.
beatles mcCartney and harrison with clapton watched hendrixs play at a concert in london.
at the woodstock festival over 180,000 stayed behind on the monday morning to catch hendrix before leaving.
the 1969 live at albert hall album has a version of 'sunshine of your love' which hendrix like to play as a tribute to cream.
gone before he even had unbeatable.
I'm probably going to get slated for this, but here goes! The Chain, by Fleetwood Mac.... inspired to use it for Formula One!
Originally I thought this thread was about the best guitar, and was going to say Les Paul... what do you guys think?
*kitty*
bloody robert johnson making a living off riffs he cadged from blind lemon jefferson. I cant abide these modern cover versions.
bolt
It's nice to see that 'Honey Boy' Edwards, who was purported to be with Robert Johnson on the day the latter died is still out there gigging at 94! That reminds me, another favourite to add to my list : 'Honey Boy' Edwards - On The Water Coast; as recorded by Alan Lomax on one of his field trips. Wonderful acoustic guitar playing. There's also an interesting chapter in Lomax's book "The Land Where The Blues Began" in which he describes meeting Edwards for the first time. Great stuff!
Oooh alan lomax--I only just got another copy of his american folk song compendium, my original having been lost in a divorce. I learnt to play guitar from my first copy of that book. I wonder if his outstanding contribution to popular music is outweighed by encouraging me to learn guitar----anyone who has heard me play will no dount think so.
