I just wanted to make my friends aware that I will be staying away from SH for a while. Today I had a PM from a couple who said “Sent you a face pic but didn't get yours in return. We know what you look like tho as we've seen you and we know where you live, your not that far away. You look really
They informed me that because I didn’t have a firewall they were able to get certain details that had led to them finding my address. They then informed me that they were “just curious†and watching me (or should I say stalking me) was “just a bit of funâ€.
Apart from being very angry I am very upset and scared. Admin have been most helpful and supportive in every way possible.
I just wanted to warn people that this obviously goes on and to make sure your computer is properly secure and not broadcasting your IP address, because apparently if you "know where to look" you can find the real address of the owner.
I may be back, I will see how I feel. If I do decide to call it quits totally I will let you know as I do regard some of you folk as friends and would like to stay in touch.

I know how frightening this stuff can be. I had first hand experience of a Nigerian scammer a while back and it still makes me shudder when I recall the threats this guy made to me, especially as he knew exactly where I lived

Well considering if somebody can get your IP address "if you know where to look" you can look up their info thats in the public domain. And as I don't know what 'they' look like so they 'could' be telling the truth for all I know I don;t think I should really having to be trying to convince you.

locations can be found via IP addresses, as they are assigned to servers, some companies can go one step further, telewest for instance, have, as part of low level IP address info, would include 'croy' to denote the user is on the croydon area, or 'basi' for basildon
to go as far as finding out other info, its not just something you stumble across, its something you have to learn, its software that has to help you, this is an act of malice, and as such, should be reported to the police asap, if you dont get any help from them, the national hitech crime unit which, if memory serves, is based at scotland yard should be contacted
you should, in no way shape or form be driven away from a public site through fear of anothers malice, they are committing a crime of harrassment, somehting which nobody should put up with

I have sent all the PMs to Admin and been chatting back and forth with them.
At the end of the day they have planted the seed, and it's bloody scary.

I went through the same thing hun but from another site. I got to the stage that I was afraid to answer the front door and had to change my phone numbers. Although I'm sure the chance of this epsiode concerning Kiss_Me won't get anywhere near that far, it's still fucking creepy!

the ip adress is that of where your internet provider "lives" . not your home ! If you go joining naughty illegal websites the cops can go to your internet provider and ask for the details of their I , as an individual cannot. I could find out your ip adress easy enough, and go there ( the great big saterlight dish on the roof may be a slight give away ! ) but it will only be an office of BT, Telewest etc etc etc.
Email is much the same, I can pm you all now through SH, but if you have your "home" pm adress like xyz at......co. uk then you will get it through your own I will still not know your real name or address. this is how spam works. funny it was mentioned about you having no fire wall !

That's like saying you can't find out someone's home telephone number, if they are ex-directory, without the help of "official" BT (or whatever) hierarchy.

not quite dambuster, you can get reverse directories, number = details ( if not x directory ) but generally its name, adress, = listed number. ( if not x d ) of course the phone company know who you are to send you bills and stuff, but they can't give that info out to the public. The police can get it though.

You can finger a user if you are a bit computer savvy. But sweetheart, don't worry. If they do turn up at your doorstep and cause you trouble, they are breaking the law. You haven't done something wrong and you should not let them steal your peace of mind away. well one could try bribing, or why not just keep dialing random numbers. Thing is , phone wise , you "have" the number already, but not the details ! and back to computers, is why spam is vague! they have your live ip, no real details. Happy thing is that in this case its from a tracable source within SH. I would think. outside, I myself get very few odd stuff because of firewalls,anti virus and spamblockers If you want a example of getting back at these ...er people, there is a . thing called "scambusters 419" its to do really with advance fee fraud or just look up "gilbert murray " on the net funny !
I have just spoken to ntl..... they say its almost impossible to get a personal address from an IP address.... anyone accessing information like this has to be logged and passed to gain such info much the same for police doing a check on your car they have to have reason such as a police officer with reason, its not a case of just checking a directory.. any company giving out such info or allowing it to be used without said cause is subject to huge fines... Contact your own ISP and ask them who and when has accessed your information.. tell them you are going to the police. They will soon act!!
