I'm sorry this has happened to you confused
It must be scary but I would take the advice given and at the least contact your ISP to see if it's a possiblity and then possibly the police.

Hope all works out for you, Kiss_Me. I suspect this is just some evil person making things up to scare you, rather than someone who actually has any real information on you.
Just to clear up any potential confusion about this part of your message...

...make sure your computer is properly secure and not broadcasting your IP address

This is a reference to an scam advert that used to pop up all over the net, which tried to scare people into buying useless software. There is no such thing as "Broadcasting an IP address", and if you did somehow stop your computer using the IP address system, it would be totally unable to get information from the internet!
While it sometimes is possible to do a bit of looking up locations from IP adresses, they generally resolve to your ISP's address, not yours. If you want to see how precisely you can be located from an IP address, take a look here:
All it says about my location is "London", and it then says I'm 16 miles from the part of london I'm actually in, so it's not very precise... and it's fiendishly difficult for one user of SH to find another user's IP unless you've used the old-style IRC chat, or communicated by some other method outside the site.
I've nothing to add apart from how sorry I am to hear about this scare and I hope it won't put you off.

Yep I'm inclined to agree, A few years back there was an E Mail doing the rounds that when you opened it, it read................."we now have all passwords and secure information off your computer" this was ofcourse complete bollox and scare mongering.

I have just spoken to ntl..... they say its almost impossible to get a personal address from an IP address.... anyone accessing information like this has to be logged and passed to gain such info much the same for police doing a check on your car they have to have reason such as a police officer with reason, its not a case of just checking a directory.. any company giving out such info or allowing it to be used without said cause is subject to huge fines... Contact your own ISP and ask them who and when has accessed your information.. tell them you are going to the police. They will soon act!!

For what its worth I think your being wound up, nasty as it is!! Don't go running off, you have done nothing wrong and nothing to be ashamed of... They are the offenders! Running off won't change where you live will it hun?

I have to agree here. I will also add that people are more likely to be able to find someone via a postcode and my advice would be not to add locations using exact postcode to profiles unless you can be sure you feel safe enough to do so. I have never had my location on my profile and recently, it caused me some hassle but Id much prefer if someone was interested in getting to know me, that they pm and ask. That way I have the choice of wether to disclose my location or not and even then I would never give an exact location until I felt comfortable in doing so.
Its easy for people to say dont worry, dont get scared and dont give up using the site but unless any of us have had first hand experience then then none of us can possibly feel the fear Kiss_me is feeling right now.
Kiss_me, Im truly sorry this has happened to you and I hope that you start to feel better the more support you get. x
kiss_me, what they all said. it's a wind up.
there is absolutely no way that someone could discover your IP, or your identity, just by using the same forum. it's just not possible. you'd need some kind of direct connection and some tricksy DOS commands, and a forum doesn't offer that opportunity.
in certain circumstances, you can get an IP address if you swap files in an IRC chatroom, but the IP address is pretty useless as far as gaining further info about you is concerned. it doesn't resolve to your physical address in any way.
it might be possible, if you use a real-life name as an email address, or sign PMs with your real name, or use postcodes in your profile, to make educated guesses and find out a few things, which is why you should be aware of the potential abuse of search engines, and safeguard your privacy as much as poss, but just logging into a forum is perfectly safe.

I've just used that site and discovered that I'm in London!  I suspect it finds the location of the IP and not the actual locality as it's about 350 miles out!
Doesn't lessen the horror of some twat doing this to anyone.

It's just located me as being in Manchester, their clock must be 10 hours slow lol as I'm at home, and defenitely not in Manchester
I don’t think I/we can add anything to what has already been said hun, but we wish you well getting it sorted. kiss
Fire and Storm mad @ whoever you are!

Gimme ya dinner money or i'l.l flush your head down the bogs bolt
I took a look at your profile kissme, and it is well vague ! As you don't list a private e mail box, then whoever has been hassling you should be tracable by the webmaster.
and the offenders suitably punished. When the offenders then cannot then acess the site, it would seem that your SH pm box remains secure . As regards spam you may get via your own home e mail ( not related) then get your firewall,antispy/spam blocker up to date and you should have no more trouble there are plenty of good (free) ones off the net. lol .

Same here ... I AM in London, but then so what? Doesn't get you very far ... as someone said, something like a full postcode would be much more precise as it narrows the search down to a street/row of houses.
As for firewall ... everyone should have one of those plus an antivirus ... Windows XP comes with it's own one and you can download free ones off the web, I think Acronis is one such firewall .
You can get Nortons Internet Security which is firewall and antivirus combined and costs between £30 and £50 . Good thing about that is that you can install it more than once so if you club together with a couple people and split the cost it's great value.

Also SH show the first half of your post code unless you set it not to in your settings. A much smaller area than an ip addy
Kiss_Me
You have my depest sympathys honey :therethere:
Don't stay away, there's people here who know how you feel and support you through this kiss
According to that IP site I'm in London too so let's all knock on RPM's door for a cuppa :evil2:
well the xp firewall is rather pathetic i think ! Norton is a good antivirus but as a 3rd line of defence I personally use spybot/spyware blaster. free and works ! oh and this postcode thing...with a full postcode you get streets but unless you have a unique address (thinks number one, buck house london !) then its still vague, but I agree a bit too close for comfort.

Had to go on XP's fierwall today my ZoneAlarms playin up and it is useless.
Babes!
Can I say that as a non swinging member of this community I have thought you funny and, if the avatar is you, also very attractive; and even though I admit I'm the wrong side of a little vino Blanco, can I come and get 'em for you?
These people should be reported, should be prosecuted, and should not drive you away, though I understand how you must feel.
BTW, my post code is close enough to the truth in distance terms, but perhaps half a million people away from my actual post code.
i'm no techy but after reading some of the posts on here it seems that whoever it is might well be winding you up..............
however, it seems to me that they have atleast committed a criminal offence under The Public order Act... Section 4 or 5....
You should be sure to mention that to the police, who, dare i say it , often dismiss minor offences using the excuse that they wont get involved unless someone gets hurt. That is a load of bollox and the law does protect people who are put in fear only.............
Technicallly i would suggest that you notify the Hi-tech Crime unit at Scotland Yard.... however, be prepared to have to reveal the circumstances in which this came about......
anyhow... i think that the person(s) winding you up are cxxts and that they are banned from the site....... after their details are revealed to the authorities
keep your chin up
((((kiss_me))))
Hope you are ok missus and that things are getting sorted for you, its such a mean and twisted thing to do to anyone, and I suppose that the majority of nice people on here sometimes make you forget that there are some grade A oddballs out there!
Don't let them scare you too much honey, its highly unlikely that they know your exact location and as has already been said, the relevant authorities are not far away if anything happens. Hope everything possible is being done to prevent any further stress for you.
Come back to us Ms Bandersnatch, things just wouldn't be the same without you x x
:therethere:
come and hide behind me babe, then we'll go and kick seven shades out of them for you kiss
you know where i am if you need me
I consider this an assault on us all and I feel for you kiss_me. If there is anything I/we can do for you please ask. This is our site and I do not like it being used like this. However they know who you are, wind up or not.
Travis.
Oh Hunni I've only just found this thread, I hope you're ok.
There are some malicious twisted bastards out there - but there are also friends, I hope they don't scare you off from SH hun, we'd miss you but you have to do what makes you feel safe.
Take care hun - please don't let them win.

Hi folks, redface
I’m here to say sorry and thanks. Firstly sorry for the knee-jerk reaction, I just wanted to leave the Internet for good as I felt violated and just wanted the scary feelings to stop and felt that if I didn’t use my computer again I would be safe. I really didn’t mean to be so dramatic.
Secondly a MASSIVE thanks to all the support I have received. I have felt genuinely overwhelmed with all the kindness and advice and I am truly, truly grateful. I had real trouble sleeping last night but I am now 85% convinced that ‘they’ don’t really know where I live. I have taken the plunge and sent an email to them saying I think they are lying and to tell me where I live. I know this may sound a little silly but it’s the only way I will know for sure and then I can move on.
I want to publicly thank ‘Admin’ whoever you are. They have reassured me about the IP issue (as have many others) and answered all my messages right away. It’s still on-going I suppose but of course you know me, I will give you all the details.
I feel foolish for being ‘scammed’ (I pray it is a scam) and getting so upset and scared, but nothing like this has ever happened to me before. Because I have Aspergers I live on my computer and find it the easiest way of communicating with people, I felt that I was losing that lifeline also which compounded the issue. Some may argue that I shouldn’t talk to strangers. lol
I don’t what else to say right now really except thanks, but that somehow seems so inadequate. For once I don’t have a quick comment or a sarcastic remark. Just thanks.
KM

 It's good to have you back and I look forward to your caustic comments.

YOU are not the foolish one here hunni, THEY are, for thinking they could pull a stunt like this and get away with it. What they weren't banking on was this 'community' closing ranks and looking out for each other. May they soon be history.

Well if you insist on chatting to the likes of me then what do you expect? :giggle:
I'm glad you've decided to stay around babes. Don't let the bastards grind you down kiss
KM - don't let overgrown school bullies cow you into backing away from a community you clearly feel a big part of.
The world is full of toxic twats who get their kicks from picking away at perceived weaknesses. The thing to do is show strength. Stand up, head high, show dignity, laugh it off. (It's much, much, much more likely that they're just sad fuckers than genuine psychos).
I've just e-mailed a mate who's very tech-savvy, and he swears it's next to impossible to glean someone's geographical address from something as abstract as an IP.
You've definitely done the right thing by informing the police, but it's probably better to ignore the people in question rather than goad them with e-mails. Bullies need victims to justify what they do. Refuse to be a victim and they'll move on to some other unfortunate soul who seems easier to bully.
It'll take determination, but the more you ignore them, the less fertile the ground for victimisation.
Most of all, though, stay visible around here - a place where you have lots of support.
Take it easy. xx
Hi Kiss_Me
Sorry to hear that someone has been fooling about with you, never is a nice thing sad
If you have only sent pm's between each other through this site then i doubt very much that they would even have your ip address to gain any information from, but if you have actually sent them emails then yes they could of gained you ip address from the email header and although tricky, it is possible to get some bits of info.
just out of curiosity though, if they did email you, did they send any pictures or files at all that you looked at?
If you really did want to make sure they ain't left anything nasty on your pc you could do a scan with your anti virus
or
I could do it for you from remote desktop sharing or netmeeting if you wanted to watch what i was doing and ensure it was very clean.
Hope you get this sorted hun.
Tony wink
Hi Kissme
Glad you've back with us with a more positive peace of site wouldn't be the same without you
