Hi There,
I have been with a smaller provider "force9" for the last 3 years + and the only problems I have ever had have been caused by our friends BT and there JCB's digging through or knocking down part of the network.
I am on a line with unlimited download for a month and have no complaints at all.

BTW...if u have 1,1 Mb fast it really means, that u can downloaded max 137,5kb. This is your TRUE speed.

Er, sorry to cotradict but that's not so!
I'm downloading stuff this evening... just downloaded a large file from my own website (using FTP) I accidently deleted from my PC, the file size was 1.4 Mb, the transfer rate was logged at Mbps in 1.4 seconds... I also uploaded some files... the last one uploaded at kbps... it depends on the server speeds.

Er, sorry to cotradict but that's not so!

I also uploaded some files... the last one uploaded at kbps... it depends on the server speeds. My mistake ;) Should be 137,5 kB(yte).
True is that each speed is counting/dividing by 8.

:? :? FFS! 1.4 Mb in 1.4 seconds @ Mbps means it downloaded a ONE POINT FOUR MEGABYTES file in (approximately) ONE POINT FOUR SECONDS @ MEGABYTES PER SECOND!!! Where on Earth does 125 kilobytes fit into that equation?? :D :D :D

U mixed kbits and kB (kiloBYTES). Rest...in Wikipedia ;)
Simple: your download speed is in kbps (for ex. 1000) but your files are saved in your PC in kB. 1000kbit=125kBytes.

No I'm not mixing up anything, I know perfectly clearly what I'm talking about - file transfer rates! i.e. how much of a file is transferred during download / upload, in kilobytes or megabytes, per second, and total transfer time! E.g. I downloaded a 1.4 megabyte file from my webserver in approximately 1.4 seconds at a transfer rate of aproximately megabytes per second (as stated by my FTP software)... TRANSFER RATE, NOT CONNECTION SPEED! My point from the beginning being that download speed - in terms of file transfer speed / rate - is dictated by how fast the server sending and the computer receiving the data can run. My initial example of downloading a music file was that despite having a fast (ish) connection speed, I was only able to achieve a transfer rate of that particular music file of 128 kiliobytes per second... wheareas I has downloaded other music files from the same site at different times at much faster transfer rates... probably because the server was less busy! My only reference to connection speed was stating that I know have a 1.1 Mbps Broadband account!
I'm with , month, unlimited, every now & then I lose all ability to connect but I have a feeling it's my computer as if I switch off & leave alone for a all abilities are returned.
I don't know how much I download a month so wouldn't like to try a capped service, originally signed up for a 512kb service but now on a 1Mb for no extra charge!

No, the file in question had not ever been on this particular computer... it was an old file originally uploaded from a different computer at my office... I had copied files off that computer to CD's two years ago but had missed that and a couple of other files... when I realised they were still on the web server I downloaded them to this PC so I could archive them to CD's... so that was in fact a totally fresh download.

Its like everything else Diez . If something makes money , when it comes down to it there are two choices . Expensive semi professional or professional choices ( some semi-pro providers have been mentioned in the thread) or the hugest of the huge popular providers . Truth is although some smaller companies will offer good services at good value for a while , if they get anywhere the big guys will ultimately crush them , as in any major business . We use AOL broadband , it gives you the cheapest unmetered service , and thats a fact becaus ethey make sure it is (every now and then BT take the lead and it swings back and forth like that) . They have more servers , more staff , more resources and more buying power , so theres really overall no contest amongst the everyday services . As with any market leader you will find many complaining about the service , but thats just because of the massive amount of users . Truth is over a length of time they are as good if not better than anyone else , as well as usally slightly cheaper .

last night i downloaded a file that was 131mb,im on connection but the download speed of the file was only a meager 64kbps
If I have part of a file already on the machine, and I download the WHOLE file again from another site, my download speed is astronomical...
Otherwise the best it manages is 72KBS....soon to be upgraded to 2Mbs...maybe, if AOL does it. But it's largely irrelevant anyway, as many people just don't need broadband...they only use the internet to send/reveive emails...
AOl is probably the best WHOLE SERVICE provider, but they use others system to get into the home, and that's where the problems mainly come from....all of my probs with AOL have been caused by faults on the BT subsystems...and I won't even go into the problems others have had when using AOL via NTL.....I like the AOL music sessions !

But the AOL programme is pants.... i have had real problems with that on mates computers when they wanted to move to another provider... i find that a wires only broadband service is the best... my set up is ... simply... Euro1net.... BT line.....(but i pay another company for my line rental (cheaper... details avail)).. then i have a PCI ADSL modem in my server.. which hosts... 2 (will be 3) websites.... email server... etc.. and 2 network cards to allow net access from the 2 machines in the house... oh.. and a wireless pci network card to provide wifi around the house + outside.....
