NTL slow as anything crashes all the time but do get a cheap deal. so you get what you pay for confused
Ours is Blueyonder. Customer service is crap. Calls to the help desk are 50p a min and all they do is put you on hold and can never find the cause of any problems - but the broad band package is part of the Telewest telly and phone deal and can't afford to pay for it seperatley with another company sad
I use Nildram which gives a staitc IP mainly for business purposes. There is a high monthly download limit (which seems to be unenforced) and it only costs £25 a month. I would be tempted by BT but the lowish download limit puts me off.

We are on 2mb btopenworld, and have been with them for almost 4 years, starting at 576k.
Service has been almost faultless until we came back from our summer vacation and we had lost service totally.
Literally dozens of phonecalls later and after an engineer's visit to the house, we were all back up and running.
One interesting fact I learnt during my ranting down the phone to the helpdesk manager.
The telephone line ADSL engineering team cover the whole of the UK and are used by all providers. So doesn't matter who you're with, when a spanner gets dropped in the works, there is only one set of ppl to help.
Waiting with baited breath for the promised 8mb speed which will then give us the television freeview and voip telephone system.

im in blueyonder, part of my telewest package with phone and tele as well
I dont get any trouble, always find customer services ok.
yep it does cost 50p a minutes to contact the tech team
but i have never called them in 3 years.
the only trouble i ever have is with my msn that keeps dropping out and dumping me off.

The worst problem I had with them was a couple of years ago when I was still on dial-up. I couldn't access the internet at all the dial-up connection just wouldn't connect and I kept getting the error message "server not responding" After spending over £16 on phone calls to the help line they eventually realised it was because the dial-up number had changed but they hadn't informed me so my modem was dialling an out of use number. I was without internet for nearly two months. They would not reimburse the cost of the calls or the cost of two months service - even though they were at fault!!!
Broadband :eeek:

Don't call the help desk. Call customer services free from your house 'phone and ask them to call you back. I do, and they have always called me back.

Thrawling?
I'm with telewest as well and if you download a lot they seem the bees knees. Especially as during this month they are upgrading 2mb and 4mb customers to 10mb line. Think this will cost 35 pounds per month if you have a phone or tv package with them as well.
Customer services are ok but whenever I ring up I feel like I'm telling them whats wrong as I know a fair bit about pcs.
Last time I rang them up they kept insisting that my internet was slow due to spyware. Funny that I had that when my pc was formatted the day before I rang them hehe.
I have just moved from BT Openworld to Carphone Whorehouse's Talk Talk package. The reason being, I had a 576k business account with BT costing £35 / month, that I had for two-and-a-half years. As BT are now advertising 1Mbps @ I asked them to change mine to 1Mbps and reduce my monthly rental. The answer? Sorry, "New customers only!" It even says that in the small print at the bottom of their TV ad! And I thought the Nationwide BS ad was a joke!
So I migrated my account to Talk Talk, 1 Mbps @ / month, unlimited download, and, included in the price, they take over your landline telephone billing... calls guaranteed to be cheaper than BT (or Talk Talk will give you £1,000), free calls to all UK land lines at weekends and free calls to other Talk Talk users ALL the time!
The migration went through seamlessly, I just got a letter from Talk Talk telling me the new username and password, and I continued to use the original BT supplied modem. Didn't need to install anything new, not even software.
Some points though about broadband... (I've been in the Internet and Telecoms industry as a consultant for a while - to subsidise my main job!)... Broadband IS very fast most of the time, but it's not guaranteed. Equipment installed at your local exchange can only support a set number of users... if everybody is online at the same time, the bandwidth and therefore speed, is diluted. In the worst case, it can become slower than dial-up! However, that is rare.
As for download limits, it's a bit misleading.... 15 Gb limit for example... that is 15,000 Mb... the chances of your average user downloading that much in a month is very remote... you'd have to be downloading a lot of very big files... that's why people with download restrictions think it's not policed, the fact is it's unlikely they are getting anywhere near the limit!
On speed again... any connection is only as fast as the weakest link in the chain... i.e. you can only download as fast as the slowest of the two computers... the suppliing server and your own computer. Example: I downloaded some music files last night... I was connected at 1.1 Mbps, but the file transfer rate was barely above 128 kbps... still quick, as a 5 Mb file takes about 30 secs to dowload at that rate... but dictated by how fast the host server can deliver the file, NOT how fast the connection is! smile

My download limit is only 2gb and I never hit that!
As for the handshaking protocols that can be a pain in the arse when playing games online if the host has a much slower connection, eg I play need for speed under ground online somtimes and I click ok to proceed and alot of the time theres someone slower that your waiting for, so you can begin
I am with Tiscali and rarely download much anyway so am not worried at all about download limits.
My ISP monthly bill is and I have smart talk to give me free 01 and 02 calls anytime for a further .. since my land line bills have been £25 a month I am sure I will make a good saving on my phone bills now.

Not much help from me on the broadband front, I've got BT Broadband and don't want to fiddle around, but the help desk charges are interesting. Have a look at this site

It list many many alternative numbers for the 0870 and dearer numbers - the telecommunications watchdog have insisted that all non-gepgraphical numbers have an 'ordinary' one to - so just look up the number and ring the 01 or 02 number instead. Same people, same phone just a much smaller charge.

I've been with ukonline since my first connection on dial up. Switched to their 2meg broadband at six months ago. I've only had one problem with them but it was a nightmare getting on with Customer Service. After much screaming and shouting I ( I was offline for 10 days)
They have given me a refund for August + 3 months free. Customer service manager told me that by the time I start paying again in December the prices will have come down as they are about to resturcture their deals. They already have a very cheap deal for 512 which is only

Those of us who use P2P services (e.g. eDonkey) quite intensively will probably push the download limits. Nldram allows 50 Gb a month and I have run over this sometimes (according to my router anyway).
