hi being fairly new here im hoping someone can help me with a little problem ,
i have AOL broadband and the yearly contract expires next month , does anybody else have a different broadband supplier and is it any good (or which is best)
ive had a few problems with AOL over the last 12 months are any of the other ones better ......
many thanks
Depends where you are. I used to use Telewest (ntl) withut problems. Their phone/net/telly package is really good. They do not operate where I live now, so we use eclipse who are ok.
BT is prolly just as bad as AOL in that they are such a big provider, they do not giver a toss when stuff goes tits up.
Have a look on-line and see who you've got available, then do comparisons. It depends on if you need upload as well as download, If it has restrictions on the amount of machines you can have hooked up, for example.
Well I'm not an expert but I have NTL Cable. Now NTL can be quite a mixed bag with digital TV etc and getting in touch with them can be a nightmare. But overall since I went digital and broadband they've not been too bad.
When I went Wifi the other week all the wireless router salesmen were very complementary saying that if you want to go wifi NTL Cable are pretty good.
Hope this helps.
I have had BT for the last 12 months and have found it to be great.
When I had a problem (which turned out to be quite an unusual one due to my network set up) they were brilliant. The initial support line was expensive but after the first couple of calls, they called me back instead and on a regular basis until the problem was solved.
So on a personal experience basis - I can only give BT the highest praise.
However, from other people in my office (techies all), the general consensus is - if you have cable - get blueyonder!

Well we dont live in a cabled stret , and so we had to go with a phone line dsl connection. When we signed up we had the choice of BT, BT or BT, nobody else did broadband.
Since then we have had the occasional blip in service, but having suffered all sorts of dial up problems for well over 10 years at home I have nothng but good words for their service.
I know that I could buy cheaper or faster or with added pie! or whatever. but as the old saying goes.... if it aint broke, then our kids havn't played with it.
Ian
im on BT Broadband and it seems to be fine, there is a cheaper one out there called "onspeed" for 25quid a year but i don't know what its like but its supposed to be 3x faster than broadband

Me too - can't get cable cos of the type of building so have had BT broadband for ages now, only one break in service and the engineers were great. Customer service people were more than a little crap at their job but they ballsed up so much I got a free month in compensation.
Never had different so can't compare but BT would be on my list now.
Just on something TE said.
I have a Wireless Router so I can access the iNet on my 3 PCs. This was also supplied by BT and again Ican't really fault it or the service. Especially now after 2 good people from here helped me become invisible!
(Jags - Nailers should have told me to RTFM!!!! - I checked in all my documentation - and there it all was! rolleyes )

I NEVER RTFM - I can't read techno-shite, that's why I keep Nallers provided with cups of tea and tasty food. He can read them and interpret them, though he did manage to bugger up my Netgear MP101 last night and had to uninstall and reinstall the blessed thing!!!
*who said that?*
Just keep your invisible cloak on all the time - makes me feel much more secure!
I'm with BT....and haven't had to much problem...at least you know you got a big company behind it. I certainly get a lot less spam in my mail than I did when i was with Tiscali .

The onspeed service is an additional cost on top of your service provider and is really aimed at those still on dial-up who want broadband like speeds. (although it will work over broadband too.)
I'm personally not too sure about their claims. It's an additional cost and that money would be better spent getting a faster broadband connection as all the onspeed service does is compress the datastream, which is already compressed a fair bit anyway. Add in compressed image formats like JPGs and you're not really able to squeeze that much more bandwidth out of a connection.
EDIT: In fact, despite all their high tech jiggery pokery, they seem to be having trouble with their web servers...
EDIT 2: Just had SpyBot block an attempted spyware install from the onspeed site, so avoid like the plague, guys.

NTL Cable broadband here too ... not many complaints and more directed at the fitters who wired the house than the service evil
We've got a wireless network here and again no problems either setting up or with performance.
We've got the full NTL package of TV, phone and BB connection. Unlimited calls locally and nationally for a fixed fee and pay less than £75 a month ... much cheaper than calls/bb via BT and Sky TV.

I've just signed up with Tesco so I'll let you know in a couple of weeks. I could have gone for a cheaper package (NTL etc or £15:99 a month with Pipex) but they either involve another box round the TV (no room anywhere) or they're at a slower speed. Tescos £19:97 a month gives free modem, free connection, and unlimited downloads. As I'm only going to be using it for here, uni research and a few other odds and sodds (shopping, porn etc) I figured I don't need anything suoer-flash.
I'm sure if I have problems with it, the forum will be second to know (after my long-suffering Countess lol ).
Try PIPEX very good service.
Geoff.
I can vouch for Pipex as well, excellent package and nothing up front. That on-speed is crap, all t does is compress your files so their easier to download, wouldnt touch it!
Also with Pipex your egg's aren't all in 1 basket as with BT or NTL.
BT like all the others, good unless it goes wrong, then from what I have seen and heard from others most of the suppliers pretty awful sad
I got a very basic package from BT, but they don't make it easy to change. I have heard good things about wannado. End of day it a bit of a gamble wherever you go, but at least it a gamble where odds in your favour that will all be ok.
I've been on Blueyonder for the last 3 years. In all that time I've been without service due to a fault at their end for a total of one day!
Maybe I've been lucky because I've heard some complaints, but for me, it's been superb. biggrin
NTL here.....
Again, no real problems with the service, just the installation really.... But then again, I was a bit of a pain in the location of the cable modem..
Average bill is £65 per month for 750k broadband+Phone&calls+tv(no sport or movies)
If its in your area, i'd suggest it against BT+sky.
Krakatoa
i would recommend either bulldog or freedom 3 surf
bulldog is best if you are in london, 4 meg for just £30 cant go wrong.
f2s is 512 no limits
I'm with PlusNet - reasonable deals for good bandwidth and good service.
Been with them for 9 months without a hitch!
Just get AOL , or BT none of the others are any better ( in fact rarely much worse ) .

it all depends if you want to have bandwidth capping, so if you want that then stay on aol or go for bt.
bandwidth capping is horrid esp if you wish to download, say movies, tv series or simply pictures.
go to or i forget which it is but one or the other is a site which tells you which bb migh be best

We tend to recommedn a company called Eclipse ( ) to most of our clients as we have found them to be an EXCELLENT isp.
They are fully configurable via the web (including MX repoints ) and when you ring customer support you get a person, not just some robot.

Plus net for me - cheap and very reliable! had them for over two years now without a problem. you can get 1mb unlimited download quota for less than £30 a month as a wires only install!
Waaaahey, at last a post I can get REALLY excited about (OK, i'm a nerd, I admit it!)
As a former wholesaler of bandwidth, I can honestly say that in the home market one name stands out and that's Bulldog... no limits, super fast speeds and superb peering arrangements...
I think this website may have been mentioned before but for unbaised (allegedly) advice you should have a
You can compare ISP's there and see who's in your area...
Hope this helps, Bulldog all the way!
DaH...
Well I'm with Freedom2Surf, which I don't think anyone else has mentioned here yet. Been on 18 months and only 1 break in service for a few hours which they notified me about beforehand.
No frills service but for (I think month) you get an email address and some webspace, and importantly it's not capped and it also gives you a true static ip address, so you can connect back home from work etc.. Of course that means you need to be extra careful about blocking nasties etc.
As an aside I don't use BT for phone calls either - talktalk is much cheaper!
Ant.
We use NTL and have never(touch wood) had any problems with it,dong rate the box though.... biggrin
Bt for us and we just upgraded broadband...never had any probs and been with them for 3 years now had broadband 2 years ago and not a problem with anything....just my other half playing with the wireless box and changing all the codes so he can't us it.. ..
