For birthday this year Dave bought me a set of personalised plates have not altered any lettering to look like anything else as have wot i want, But i did choose slightly funky lettering for my new number plate, and a slightly saucy by line.
And worry every time i see a police car lol
but up until now i have had no problems and hope to keep it that way, even flew through the MOT with the number plate on car . biggrin

I thought fancy lettering and 'unofficial' spacing was naughty? If so, the shop you got your plates fromwill be in bother too- they have to keep a record of the owner's details for every plate they make.
I dunno if this applies to shops selling naughty number plates but a few years ago I wanted blue lights on my windscreen washers. I went to a reputable car shop and they said they sell them but they are illegal (which I didn't know at the time) and you could buy them, but they wouldn't fit them.
Dunno if it applies for number plates too?

All I will say flower is I know for def about the number plate law in Scotland, if I told you how I know I would need to kill you rolleyes
46 Extension to Scotland and Northern Ireland
(1)Part 2 of the Vehicles (Crime) Act 2001 (regulation of registration plate suppliers) extends to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

woo
So, as I asked before ...Does that mean that the people supplying me (and loads of others ) with Kitemarked licence plates, without seeing any of my documents, are breaking the law ??
Am I also breaking the law when I purchase them ??
yes and yes
splendid
When I bought the current car I have, I used a website based in Ireland, got 2 new plates (still a '52' reg) which has a VW badge where the European Union flag sits
It is UK spec spacing, nothing has been altered on the numbers, no documents or proof of ownership were asked for
Recently, I got stopped by police, and as a parting shot, one of the officers said "change your plates, they are illegal"
I asked why, he said "the VW badge is illegal"
I replied it isnt, its the same spacing as the EU flag, he told me not to argue, and change it
I havent, and wont

What I have failed to inform the post on the above , is that a] I have been caught doing 34 in a 30 limit by a camera, in Northants. Given a choice of 3pts or attending speed class, took latter. No mention of reg plate. b] Was involved in a six car shunt on M1, {I was in the middle} Police etc attended. Again no mention of plate.

Mmm 34 in a 30 limit carries no offence! The law states that there must be a 10% + 3 miles an hour.. So unless over 36 miles an hour in a 30 No offence as such? Send it back anyway but you should never have even recieved one to start with for 34!!
Just an observation..

My car failed the MOT in June - one of the things was the registration plate (it had cracked and some dirt inside it made it illegible, they said). I went with my documents to have a new one made and he took all my details. I was talking to the counter chappy whilst it was being made and he said it's not worth the trouble they'd get into, to make anything other than standard plates.
But what about those that make number plates on the local markets etc?
Are they as careful about documents??

Possibly not, but it doesn't make it any less naughty!
At last year`s Dorset Steam Fair, there was a firm making up number plates on-site. While I didn`t get any made then (couldn`t remember my reg. no!)I did get them to mail order me a couple of spare plates for my two trailers, for which they only wanted my credit card details. No other info was required. I also got them to make up two plates with my username on. I told them that this was for "show perposes only". Again these were supplied without question. The firm was from the Midlands.
As for comments about the spacing of letters, how many times have you been unsure of what the number is because 1`s have been spaced next to H`s or similar? Bugger the BB camera`s reading them, I may need to read them too! evil

Those (and the blue washer lights Creampie mentioned) are usually sold with a disclaimer stating "for show purposes only" - so the retailer has a get out to sell them legally. Same for clear and dark brake light lenses, neon kits etc!
Interestingly enough, even if you buy aluminium black and silver plates which are legal for the age of the car they're going on, they still come with a "not for road use" sticker because there's no makers reference on them.
I make my own at work with a colour printer, that way they can say whatever you fancy.
