There's nothing on my Home thing about it.
Is there any chance we can be told about these things before they get imposed - along with how to get rid of it?
Edit: And there's nothing on my home page about privacy anything. Where can I go to get rid of this bar?

Go to your Settings. Then to privacy and click Messenger Off.
I think MadMax had already said that further up the thread.
It is basically a tool to chat to people you have added to your Friends. I quite like it... but then I have a tendency to mess up my whispers and get all embarrassed!

Messenger is alrady off. But the bar is there. I don't think I can be looking in the right place.
Settings on the left (not in Home btw so that confused me) and the Privacy tab. And inside that is a load of tick boxes, there is a thing marked Global. It's off and I haven't touched it.

But I didn't change anything - it was already set to off. :dunno: I'll give it a go but it looks like the usual IT nonsense.
Edit: Yep that worked - but it should have been off if it was already set to 'off'. Sometimes I hate IT - and I teach the damn thing! LOL

It is like MSN - a conversation between online friends. You have to have accepted the other person as a friend before they can see you in the Chat list.
I am fairly sure that the techie guys will be able to pull logs. But hey, if you want to break the AUP in a conversation with a 'friend' then that seems a bit odd to me...
So far this evening I have conversed about poetry and my weekend away - clearly I am not nearly controversial enough!

Cos it was a nasty thick bar across the bottom of me screen and if I want to talk to friends in private I`ll use MSN or the pm system or even whisper in chat .....don`t want a nasty bar across the bottom of me screen ....thanks
Does it depend on the size of your screen? Because I don't think it is thick at all.

To disable the IM
Settings > Privacy Tab > Messenger > Global Off > SAVE
This will remove the Chat Bar at the bottom of the screen.
To re-enable the IM
Settings > Privacy Tab > Messenger > Friends > SAVE
This puts the bar back but you may need to refresh your browser screen (F5) to update who’s online.
To start an IM session:-
Click on the name and start typing in the chat box.
To detach the IM box from the bottom of the screen:-
Click on the /^ icon on the Online Friends window.
This then allows you to treat it as a separate desktop window.
To return IM to the bottom of the SH page:-
Click on the </ icon in the lower right of the screen.
To view a friends profile:-
Click on their Avatar picture in the chat box.
