Where's ukwineman when he's REALLY needed?
Which do I open now and drink?
Guentota Estate Chardonnay 2007?
McGuigan Estate Limestone Coad Chardonnay 2006?
Sainsbury's TTD Pinot Grigio 2006?
All cold and all ready to be down my throat.
dunno :dunno: :dunno:

Only because I do like a Pinot Grigio! Enjoy - I'm jealous!
I prefer Pinot Grigio to Chardonnay but got a consignment of it in my last surprise mixed case delivery!
OK, as I'm going to use it as medicine then the Pinot Grigio it is - thanks.

This isn't much help in this case, but if you buy a French wine, look on the label for 'appelation controlee'. This is the highest of the quality marks they give their wine. The lower quality wine will have 'vin de pays' or 'vin de table'.
That is my only bit of wine knowledge really.

Will remember that in future biggrin

Thanks! I rarely drink French wine and even more rarely buy it but it's something to look out for if I ever get given one.

The French wine market is taking a hammering at the moment Jags because there are so many really good alternatives about.. like the grigio. It is said that the French are currently contemplating turning most of their wine lake into enthanol as cheap fuel. Eastenders in Calais buy what the french find unacceptable, rebottle it and flog it as cheap wine to the unsuspecting British arriving at the port to save on UK duty. Urrgggh
I have moved away from the heavy rich and fruity types of wine. I tend to buy a Bordeaux white and a Beaujolais red. Both are in the weakest end of the range.
i buy whatevers on offer cos lets face it i am just gonna pour it down my throat and not savour it
Go for the pinot grigio only because I hate chardonnay! (unless it's unoaked)
I'm faaaaar too fussy for my own good when it comes to wine- it usually has to be a sauvingon blanc or sancerre or if its red then cab sauv/merlot.
I've yet to find a french wine i like, it's usually south african, new zealand/australian/chilean that i go for.
Den goes for whats on offer down the corner shop which is usually some kind of manky chardonnay, although if i've had 5 or 10 gins first then anything goes wink
When it comes to rose, any will do for some reason!
mmmm.....wine.....might have to open a bottle now! grrr jags!hehehe
M xx
I love my wine and if i was given the chance to come back as something else in the next life it could quite possibly be as a St emillion regional wine cellar!
I like wine new world or old. Though very subjective to the individual i know I enjoy the whole experience and the French, i regret to say (i'm not an advocate of the french) really do it justice. Unfortunately this is reflected in the price.
For those who enjoy a really refreshing wine maybe to relax with after work on a Friday, i would like to suggest trying a riesling - ok, ok, I'm not on about your everyday German big literage quaffing wine (which incidentally i really enjoy as well) but a French Alsace reisling - fantastic!!.
Be careful on price though you want to be paying about £7:50 - £9:00 a bottle and there hasn't been a bad year in the lats ten really speaking. To be honest unless you want to get really anal about it the difference between paying £7:00 for an '06' and £25:00+ for a vintage '97' dunno not a great deal in drinking pleasure i think.
Great to drink with or without food of most desciptions it really is worth a shot. Another Grape to try from Alsace is the Gewurztramner - a bit more ballsy if you like that sort of thing.
I'd go with the Gewurztraminer too!
Real peppery kind of taste.. one to savour on it's own. You'd have to be careful choosing food to go with it!
drinkies
I had the Pinot Grigio, shared a chinese takeaway and thoroughly enjoyed them both.
TBH Chardonnay is too inspid for my taste which is why there are still 2 bottles of it.
Thanks for the help folks. Tonight I will only drink water to make up for my slippage yesterday. I'm trying to confine my alcohol consumption to one night a week and Friday night seems the perfect choice.
lol
The few times I have wine I tend to go for a Red or Rosé....white tastes funny to me lol
Haven't got a clue about a decent Red though

I'm with you on the Gewurztraminer ... if I've got to drink white ... they produce it in New Zealand too.
But give me red any day ... rioja, merlot, shiraz, zinfandel ... something with a bit of taste to it!
Faced with two bottles, and uncertainty, I'd open both ... to compare them! biggrin :D
Zinfandel - yuk!
Big juicy red wines are fine. Can't be doing with stuff like Pinot Noir or Zinfandel or rose wines.
The vast majority of the imported German reds are horrible too but the local areas have 'country' reds which are fabulous. I'm lucky enough to have family who own a vineyard (but rent out) in the south of Germany and am able to drink/bring back such wine. Just take your own bottles and stoppers and collect. However, in the summer I much prefer white wine.
A New Zealand wine label 'Sanctuary' do some stunningly tasty whites with loads of flavour and depth. The Sauvignon Blanc is especially wonderful - may go and get some this morning!
cool 8-)
