Well I'm a charity shop shopper, through choice as well as need, and I have a fabulous dark purple "ball gown" (strapless with netting) which is actually a bridesmaid's dress.
So - try some of the charity shops, especially as we are coming into wedding season.
Mine was
Whips- looks like you have exactly the same problem as me lol Take sizes in TK with a huge pinch of salt- the sizes are often totally cocked up translations from US sizes.
I'm with Chezza- really excited at the prospect of the next few weeks scouring charity shops looking for costume gear for "Camp Cowboy". I saw something I really liked online & nearly bought it- but I far prefer to put stuff together myself :bounce:

It's irritating to not be the 'norm' or a 'regular' size.
Two shopping tips for a curvy girl.
One - Lingerie section in Asos, cheap almost disposable corsets, average cost is £30 last for three to four wears if worn very tight.

If you want to spend a bit more on a fitted tailored look go to london based and tres reasonable for how beautiful they are, speaking as a dedicated fan of corsets.
Failing all this a good, although hard to find dependant upon shape retailer might be:
Coast
- check out the sale section, beautifully made clothes, only buy in the sale as they are beautiful but not worth the tag!!!
Maybe a beautiful but simple corset from somewhere like asos or diva with a fitted and flared (different sized?) skirt from Monsoon or coast might work well.
Go to for good fitted lingerie and bras that might make the difference.
Good luck with sympathy, amber xxxx
I always made my own ball gowns as I had the problem of being bit busted an small elsewhere... hence why I stopped wearing dresses so much over the years.
Besides having one made for you I dont have any other suggestions Im afraid. Although you can get some great basque/tops to go with skirts so you can mix and match the sizes! Some of them look like dresses once one.
Good luck on your search smile

Amber, hope you dont mind, but I edited your post as the divacorsets link wasnt working, but it is now :P
Now, where did I put HIS credit card
I HATE clothes shopping - I've gone home in tears because of the frustration. Just trying to find one single item in all the shops in town that I can wear, looks ok and i can afford is impossible sometimes.
Women's clothes are sized (I believe) at one size. Then they are scaled up and down for the larger and smaller sizes. A dress size 18 generally looks stupid on most women cos it is actual a size 10 that has just been grown to a size 18.
I have never found a dress that fitted, even my wedding dress didn't and that was made for me. I have a large bust, wide shoulders, a (size 18) hours glass figure and a long spine. Even drop waisted dresses had the waist up under my boobs. And corsets are so short my stomach sticks out under them.
Damn, I knew I shouldn't get started on this thread LOL
Urghhhhh tell me about it evil
I used to be a size 12, but over the years clothes have been getting smaller and smaller and they now call it a size 20 mad
On top of that, all my original clothes seem to have shrunk in the wash :x
I would climb in the washer to shrink myself to fit the clothes, but the door is only about a size 6 :x
If you go to specialist tailors and dress makers they will do a good job for you. Its expensive, but in some cases its the only way to get something right.
Otherwise its an endless and fruitless search amongst standard sizes. Resulting in unhappiness.

I dont think we are talking just special occasions here. Most women, including me, have problems all of the time when shopping for clothes.
Im sure none of us can afford to go and get all our outfits 'tailor made' so i guess we are destined to a lifetime of "unhappiness"
Men! You havent a clue rolleyes I bet it was a bloke who devised the sizing system too so double
hi Whips,
Clothes shopping sucks, especially when you got a bigger bust lol. I used to be a DD pre babies and now a G which men love but that I find difficult to get clothes for lol. I too have hour glass figure which should be a dream to dress but like you say ends up being difficult lol.
My tips are as you said about separates and few of the other ladies have said too. I seem to fit in some dresses from monsoon and that was where my wedding dress was from. Also good underwear can help, I use fantasie, on the dearer side but apart from making an outfit look good they can generally save you a lot of back ache lol.
- most department stores stock them.
Ambers tips about corset look excellent smile
Charity shops are good too, in my ex-home town we had one specifically for second hand ball-gowns, check your local yellow pages. Or if its a one off event you could try renting they sometimes have better fitting more expensive brands.

Have ya tried ebay?
They have some stunning gowns on there, and the ones from China are usually from 1 penny to around £30, with about £15 to £25 quid p & P on em.
Some of the chinese sellers ask for your measurements and make them to fit, many peeps stay away from them cos they are not based in UK, but i have bought loads from china and never had a prob with them.
heres one i picked totally at random as an example

you can see you can send them all your measurememnts and they will make it for ya, and as I say, quite often there are no bbids on them cos people dont buy from outside the uk
just another avenue for ya to try...good luck with the search biggrin
worth a shot hun
