Do we have any dentists in the house?
I need to take one of the kids for a filling next week and the dentist suggested a white filling rather than the free metal ones. I want to know if he is going to rip me off for £40 or if it is worth me paying
Dawn dunno
A white filling is more aesthetic, I have one of each right next to each other and the white one looks like its part of the tooth. It'll be especially useful for when your kids grow up and have a mouth full of white teeth rather than ones with black/silver holes in them.
Also the metal ones have mercury which is bad for you. And for £40 is cheap, mine cost £50 and that was with a free consultation instead of £30, although I am going private.
White fillings: you can eat straight away. Mercury (silver) fillings: you need to wait an hour. The wait used to be 3-4 hours for them to dry but, if that was necessary, I am sure your dentist would have advised you.
As for pulling teeth out, that is not a solution. Nature has a defence mechanism so, when you pull a tooth out, it moves the other teeth to try and cover the gap. The tooth movement is very painful and lasts several months leaving unsightly gaps. If you need to have a tooth pulled out, it is advisable to get a bridge made to cover the space or get an implant.
Silver fillings vs. white fillings: lots of research has been done about them. There is a link to mercury fillings and migraines and other health issues. It is slow poisoning but a lot of people think it is a ploy from dentists to take your money by changing your fillings to white ones.
It is worth paying to have dental work done privately. It is a good investment for one's future - £40-60 for something that will last 20 years... that's not too bad surely? And it boosts your confidence to have a good smile. A good smile will hide imperfections in your face (eg. a big or crooked nose, pimples, scars) and win people over. wink
Hope this little info helps!

Just for info.............. White fillings last approx 7 years on average
Silver fillings last approx 12 years on average
U r not charged for a white filling if it is for a child and is visible when they smile....
How do I know................... coz the kids and I have just had our 6 month check ups........lol
I am private they r National Health..........Bluddy National Health wouldnt take me on !!!!
Thank you and good night............ That is the only sensible answer you will get out of me ever........lol
Well at least it is good to know that children get the best dental attention possible.
I had some white fillings done on the NHS and the job was dreadful. The colour was totally wrong, I ended up having gaps between the teeth and I felt a huge bulge where the filling was. I went back and complained after a week or two (the dentist had said the bulge would go on its own). Eventually the manager of the practice accepted to redo my teeth at a fraction of the cost of private treatment (I only paid the actual cost of the filling, the job was done free of charge). He did a brilliant job.
PS: maybe I have been lucky but I have fillings since school, that is 20+ years ago! If the dentist does a proper job to clean out the damaged part of the tooth and applies the filling carefully and gives you proper care instructions, there is no reason to replace the fillings unless they come off. Maybe modern materials are not that strong? We'll see...!
Hi
Silver fillings - Chew after 1 hour
white fillings - Chew immediately
But if you prefer soup then they will never fall out...not unless you get slapped!!!
ahhhhhh sorry for posting the above....i only read page 1 and didnt realise page 2 existed.....d'oh!
Fillings.......Right, you have two camps in dentistry. The silver brigade and the more aesthetic (as already quoted) brigade.
Silver fillings contain mercury....Are they gonna make you go mad and give you alzheimers?.....well Tuna and Lettuce have mercury and if you have plenty of those items then you will take in more poison than a mouthful of silver will give you, so there is VERY LITTLE evidence that silver fillings harm....they are more dangerous to the environment when a dentist drills them out. when he drills them out the heat generated causes more mercury vapour to the patient, so have them taken out one at a time.
White fillings have improved greatly over the past 6 years. They are now VERY strong and if placed correctly by your dentist, will last longer (probably) than a silver one. They are more technique sensitive and take ALOT more time to place properly than amalgams. But I believe they are worth it in the long run especially in young teeth. Silver fillings 'expand' in the tooth and cause fractures, leading to root canal therapy/crowns and when the dentist originally drills the hole, he has to make the hole MUCH bigger than he does for white fillings.
At least if the white filling goes wrong he can re-stick it cutting minimal tooth tissue away. If he prepares the same tooth for silver or white, he would cut away 30% more tooth tissue to get the amalgam to stick.....I know I want to retain as much original tooth as possible!
It may be more expensive but I would now go for white everytime!
Hope this helps......Should you wish to know more please dont hesitate...
@ mr_broad_shoulders:
Sounds like you've had a lot of fillings
:giggle: bolt
Thanks for the info guys. It looks like I will be spending a hell of a lot of money in the next few weeks because we have 3 nasty children and 2 of them aren't cleaning their teeth properly mad
As for getting them on NHS, I've been told thats not possible because they are at the back of their mouths rolleyes
White ones it is
Dawn biggrin
cu3b4ll..........no mate, I have some fillings but not as many as you assume.....I am actually in the world of dentistry....thats why I know so much about it. wink
Dawn.....Unfortunately white fillings in back teeth are not available on the NHS and to be honest even if they were available on the Nash I wouldnt have one done on it. They need 'time' to place and NHS fees are too low for dentists to take their time and do a 100% fantastic job.
Yes i think for the sake of the future of your children have white fillings....I know its more expensive but at least you can sleep at night in that you are doing the best for them and thats the really important thing. How young/old are they?
NHS dentistry is becoming harder to find and in the future it will be just an emergency service. The government do not want to have to pay for NHS dentistry, that is clear and they will make the dentists out to be the bad guys but dentists are paid the rush everything and then get a bad name when the fillings/crowns go wrong. So the sooner we all start looking at private dentistry the better for our health. Just think about this.....Those people who have pets think nothing of going to a 'private' Vet and paying through the nose yet we begrudge paying for our own health...its true yet bizarre at the same time!
Happy fillings everyone!
Good luck
before you can eat rolleyes

Not a bad idea biggrin
I am so brave when I take the kids and hold their hand while they have work done. We have a 13 year old that sees the orthodontist regularly as he is having brace work. Although I did almost cry while holding his hand when he had to have a tooth removed  I hide it so well so I don't give the kids my fear and I never have even a check up with them anywhere near me.
I bloody hate it dunno
Right then, that proves it, two people with the exact same symptoms it has to be a phobia.
So now we need a good name for the support group.

Come on guys, its early and I have a hangover, just know you lot can do better.
In any case passionkiss hump :therethere: kiss 69position from one sufferer to another
(just string the caps together)
heheheee Poor Sufferers!!!
I bet you both had a bad experience when you were younger with the school dentist.... this is usually the case...sad but true.
Whe I was a kid(woe am i) the dentists used to just get in and get out as soon as possible....often butchering an extraction!
Now dentists are trained to have a better bedside manner and they are taught that they are dealing in patients and not just with teeth!
You do get dentists who specialise in phobic patients......they generally have more patience (not patients) than most others, usually women as well!!!
Its probably your only hope.....I like the way you say that you are so brave for your kids!!! lol ooooh so brave!!! heheehee smile
So, 8 years old and fillings.........several things.......dont let them have too many fizzy drinks, they rot their teeth.......diet coke for instance is marginally better than normal coke! Also chewy, toffee style sweets are bad as they stick in the grooves of their teeth.
Also the best way to ensure they clean their teeth is have them all do it at the same time and you sit in the bathroom with them and talk to them when they do it.....that way they dont realise you are there to really watch them.....and you can communicate better with them.......its hopefully, happy days from here on in!!!! Yeah right!!!!
Katie

Hell no! I am just being the concerned parent trying to find out whats best for our boys rolleyes
Dawn biggrin
Must admit the dentist has never bothered me until recently.
My parents had private detail care from as far back as I remember and the staff were lovely. He retired abut 10 years ago and since then my teeth have been neglected somewhat and we recently managed to get in an an NHS dentist, but his manner leaves little to be desired and when I went the other day it was very rushed.
Would definitely pay to go private if we had the money sad

there are two good practices in Chippenham.....one is on New Road (I think) its on the corner of a one way system.....there is a private large car park pretty much at the top of a hill....as to see either of the two female dentists....cant remember their names.
The other practice is in the high street. as you go up the hill its on the right, upstairs
Good luck

WOW, thank you :rose:
