Just clearing out my drawer and found a sealed box of CK Obsession for men, eau de toilette, what ever that means, must have been in there over 5 years. Do these things have a shelf life? I'm not really one for perfume, is perfume even the right word?
Do you like guys to smell of perfume?
Just did a search and came up with this.
Perfume
This consists of a 15-30% concentration of perfume essence and is the strongest fragrance available. This means that not only do you need to use less, but also that the fragrance lasts longer, typically for up to 6 hours, depending on skin type.
Parfum De Toilette
This is usually between a perfume and an EDP in strength but a few companies use the term to describe an EDT.
Eau De Parfum (EDP)
This is lighter than Perfume, with an 8-15% concentration, and so is less expensive but still has long lasting characteristics, from 3 to 5 hours.
Eau De Toilette (EDT)
This is a lighter more delicate fragrance, with a 4-8% concentration of the essence, and is therefore most suited to everyday use. It is normally less expensive than Eau de Parfum, and lasts for 2 to 4 hours.
Eau De Cologne (EDC)
This is often referred to just as Cologne and has the greatest dilution of fragrances with a 3-5% concentration of perfume essence, lasting up to 2 hours.
For men
Eau De Toilette (EDT)
This has the greatest concentration of essence generally available for men and hence lasts the longest, up to 5 hours. It is often available in either a splash or a spray.
Aftershave
Less strong, it is the most popular choice and lasts for 2 to 3 hours. Aftershaves are kinder to the skin than EDT's. Those with very sensitive skin should use aftershave balms.
The % by volume that you see on the bottles is the amount of alcohol that is in the fragrance blend. Basically perfume companies 'pad out' their fragrances with alcohol, firstly to make them go further, and also because otherwise they would be incredibly strong to wear! A perfume with strong smelling essence ingredients will have more alcohol with it than one which is more delicate.
Why do some fragrances smell different on my skin when compared with my friend's?
This is because pH levels (the amount of acidity in our skin) varies from person to person. Our individual levels of pH will determine how each ingredient in a fragrance will react on our skins which in turn impacts on the smell.
How can I keep my fragrance from going off?
Keep your fragrances in a cool, dry and dark area as sunlight can unbalance the various ingredients. An opened bottle should be kept in its box to ensure a longer shelf life.
NOT ALOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THIS!!!!
As for shelf life.....yes I believe there is a shelf life for smellies!!! I think I read 2 years somewhere whilst doing this search but cannot find it again so not entirely sure.
In answer to your question...yes I like a guy to smell nice but it does not necessarily have to be aftershave etc.

Wow Wilma, a complete fountain of knowledge.
I think the shelf life of the EDT and aftershave is when it starts to go off. It will still be safe to use but after a while the smell will be different, some say, more potent. So if it still smells good, use it.
I think EDT are better but I suppose that's because I'm a rough ad ready type. hahaha. cool
Thanks Wilma, I knew a lady would have all the answers. So it might be more potent, but if it smells good use it. Thanks mattmoleman, so your be rough an ready and I will be Knock em dead.
Aftershave only lasts for 2-3 hours? Wow, I never knew that... might explain a few things. Thanks Wilma.
I've been using the same bottle of aftershave for at least the last 8 years, with no noticable ill-effects. (Though I am still single... hmmmm...)

I still have some 'Aramis' left over from the 80's when it was one of the aftershaves that sent ladeeez wild....I don't know about any ill effects, but when i put some on recently I started wanting to listen to some Kajaoogoo and Wham.......think i'll just save it for any 80's theme nights (or the NW munch! wink )

Isn't that the fragrance from the armpit of a character from The Lord of the Rings or The Three MUSKateers :!: :!: confused:
i like my men to smell of "my" perfume!
some animals mark their teritory by peeing on things... i rum myself against mine and spread my smell that way!
wink
seriously though, my fave smel on a man is just "clean", when they smell of soap and shampoo and have just come out of the shower it makes me swoon, beats any aftershave as far as i am concerned.
MrsFC still likes the smell of Aramis smile
Mrs Mirth tends to get all excited when I have been having a strenous day in the garden,.... she reckons I become all sherberty.... and then I go and spoil it all be having a shower!!!!
but I hate being sweaty...fresh sweat may be fine pheremones etc.... but stale sweat is a big no no .... fine balance

Nothing like a splash of the old "Hai Karate" aftershave bolt
I'm an Old Spice man myself. I have some Joop I was given as a present a few years ago, but it just doesn't measure up...
Nothing like a splash of the old "Hai Karate" aftershave

I think even one 'dab' of the stuff on a very tiny cotton bud is too much! Pooey! wink

Mr KL Is that "Hong Kong Pooey" KL? lol
It's a real mans aftershave :hunk: :lol2:
I use Clinique Happy for Men and only ever have good reports. Old Spice will forever be associated with my grandad and Aramis is my dad's favourite. I'll always go for something lighter and with more citrus.
Is that "Hong Kong Pooey" KL?

Yeah, and even the crime fighting canine would never touch the stuff. Although Rosemary ("Hello! Hello! Rosemary, your loveable lady fuzz ... you don't say ... you dont' say ... you don't ) apparenty loves it.....
It's ok, I'm heading back to my cage soon
