I just so love the shock emoticon :shock: I think of all of them it's my favourite. It depicts so well what it means to depict confused

I don't like this one dunno

If someone replies to a post I've done and puts this in, I always feel as if it not only says "I don't know the answer" but also "what a stupid question!"
or something like that - there's definitely some negativity in there.
And I think it's because my mother used to do it along with rolleyes

and :fuckinghell: . I can just picture her face - except she wasnt yellow and bald.

the thing with emotes is, no matter how many you use, they never quite qualify things enough, and they can always look sarcastic? difficult to convey tone with a little animated gif? :P

as negative, I use it if suggesting something or putting an idea foreward that may or may not be right
Chesty - I use rolleyes

when referring to me, rarely others (and then as a joke) as then it often comes across as derogatory

Probably not going to do this topic justice as its late and I can’t remember where I left my thinking head dunno

but anyway ……. Personally I think emotes are an absolute essential to the whole posting ethos.
I know this will leave a lot of you thinking :dunno: but please bear with me.
I know some of the veterans on here have heard my views on this before and will be thinking ‘here he goes again’ :bs: rolleyes

but for those less accustomed to the media of the forum (or my spouting of bollox) let me just say this:…………..
Emoticons have a real place in the posting media, their major roll, as far as I can see is to insert the one thing that is missing from all text based forms of communication, nameley, visible emotion.
It is so easy to take offence at a post, especially one that has been posted in reply to something you have posted (bear with me here I will get to the point :roll: ) for example:…………
Well I was there and I thought it was feckin hilarious
Or

Another example might go like this: …
Feck all to do with me …….
Or

To take it to an extreme, try this diversity of emote use and ask yourself which sentence would upset you the most: ………………

There is a school of thought among the older generation of forumites ( not just this site) that emotes are a childish form of expression. Well that may or may not be true, personally I think they mean that they just cant be bothered to show how they feel and expect the rest of us lower mortals to continue to guess …… well that’s cool, each to their own, all I can say to that is ……. flipa
