ok after some absence a post from me!.....how do I erase all trace from my computer that I have been on this site as I am about to employ some one to use this computer for work related things
all advise welcome
Do you mean you think SH is a dodgy site lol
If using Netscape go to Edit, preferences, History then delete history and location bar. Not sure about a deeper clean than that besides going right through your cookies and temp files folder but I'm sure some pc-techy type person will be along shortly with the correct answer
nice to see you back wink
Can't you just delete from your History rolleyes
It depends what O/s you are useing if your on firefox do this.................
Open PC find hard drive and hammer a chisel through it
if your using a microsoft browser just use the PC it's bound to catch fire sooner or later lol
Failing that clear history using the tools >>> options buttons that should get rid of the worst of it
nice to see Sheddy still has the use of his hands.......or has he?? lol

DO A COMPLETE REFOREMAT its the only way to be completely sure that there is no trace and reload the O/S
I take my laptop into the shower with me every night after I've been on here.
That way I know its completely clean. wink

As an aside..... I used to be assistant IT manager for a company, and my favourite role was to inspect the laptops of the sales reps while they were being given their "your fired" interviews.
I had 15 minutes to find something incriminating on the laptop, just in case the sales guy didn't want to "go quietly". During my time there I had to check four laptops, and there was enough on every one to deeply embarass the user. Thankfully my findings were never needed, as loosing ones job is traumatic enough.

You sneaky bastard!
:giggle:
If you can be bothered to wade through all the flack rolleyes there's some info in this thread.
Safest way though has got to be a complete format/rebuild from scratch ;-)
Why dont you just introduce them lol

Not sneaky, honest ! Maybe I should have added some more words. These were IT literate people. But all four laptops had something on them that shouldn't have been there. One poor guy had even registered on a penis enlargement forum - and he was a regular poster redface . What I was trying to explain, was that no matter how thorough you think you are. It's always worth trying something else as well.
Ian
But did either of you find fellow SH members amongst them? :giggle:

Try the kitchen then Dawnie lol Remember I ventured in there the other night because the kitchen fairies were on strike, cut myself a piece of cake, and ended up slicing through the end of one of my fingers.
That place is scary, so I wont be back in there in a hurry.

yep a complete reformat and re-install is the safest bet but that wont stop someone if they really want to see what yout pc has been used for in the past. the only secure way of managing data is by using a linux operating system such as ubuntu.
If you are like 90% of computer users (guess!) you'll be using Windows Internet Explorer, so Google for "Free Internet Eraser" and install it. Run it then un-install (if you think someone might ask why it's on your PC)
Here's what it has just cleaned on my PC

A file/program called TWEAKUI can be freely and safely obtained from Microsoft at the usual address. It has a sub menu called "Paranoia", the options in which reasonably cover most of your immediate fears.
It is correct to say you would be safest doing a complete re-build but as you seem to be/would have to be pc literate to carry out almost any of the advice here about deep "tampering" why not just set them up as a limited user with their own account. Theoretically should keep them out of the sensitve areas where other cleaners don't reach.

Its simple to do and your pc will act an look like you just bought it brand new form the shop.

Whilst I agree with the above comments, I think that reformatting is a bit of a "sledgehammer" approach if you just want to stop your average user finding out what you have been up to.
OK, in the hands of an IT expert, your computer will tell them all sorts of stuff you don't want to reveal but, in your case, I don't think you need to go that far, especially as reformatting your PC means you have to have the original operating system CD (or the PC has a manufacturers image of the system on a hidden partition of the hard disk which you can access and restore) and you have all your application software CD's as well.
Reformatting without all this will render your PC useless (until you obtain all the necessary software and re-install it.
I'm quite happy using the Internet Eraser I mentioned earlier and I have a computer-literate son who uses my PC - it's up to you how far you need to go.
Good Luck,
Adam

Go to and search for CrapCleaner (CCleaner)

We use this program as well, Very simple to use but powerful with it.
Easily customisable you can remove as much or as little as you wish.
Overwrites data upto 7 times (NSA standards) Pretty much only forensic software can recover that.
Also includes a handy registry cleaner too, deletes all the broken links from your reg files (deleted programs and the like)
