Dammit, I'm SO pissed off that Mr Writer beat me to it with Jimmy Webb's Wichita Lineman. However, you missed out the lovely next line ....
(And I need you more than want you)
And I want you for all time.
Awwwww ... gorgeous, innit?
I also swooned over Essex Nympho's choice. (Mind you, that MIGHT be because I've seen her ad/pics, and just want to ingratiate myself ..... *drooling*).
Further to an earlier entry:
And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all ti-i-ime
Excuse me, I've just come.
And how about this one?
It’s that old devil called love again
Gets behind me, and keeps givin’ me that shove again
But it's rain in my eyes, tears in my dreams, and rocks in my heart
It’s that sly old son of a gun again
He keeps telling me that I’m the lucky one again
But I still have that rain
Still have those tears
And those rocks in my heart
'Spose I didn’t stay
Run away, wouldn’t play
The devil what a potion he would brew
He’d follow me around
Build me up, tear me down
Till I’d be so bewildered, I wouldn’t know what to do
Might as well give up that fight again
I know darn well he’ll convince me that he’s right again
When he sings that sorry song
I just got to tag along
With that ole devil called love
I saw Alison Moyet do her blues concert in Albert Hall......
Still get a tingle down the back of the neck when I hear that song.....
Awesome!

What a great idea OOTD song lyrics mean so much to many of us.
I guess we're all going to show how soppy we all are by answering this posting lol.
So here goes this song reminds me of a recent painful time in my life and still makes me shiver hope you like it.
Blindman by David Coverdale
I was dreaming of the past,
Why do good times never last
Help me jesus, show the way
I can't hold on another day
I was hungry, felling low,
I just couldn't make out which way to go
Chasing rainbows that have no end,
The road is long without friend
Be my friend, be my brother,
Be the piper, play the call
Across the seven seas of wonder
Be the guardian of my soul
Just a young man looking homeward,
Watching the sun go down again
Across the water, the sun is shining,
But, will it ever, will it ever be the same
Be my friend, be my brother,
Be the piper, play the call
Across the seven seas of wonder
Be the guardian of my soul
I need somebody, i need someone,
I need somebody to call my own
Like a blindman, i can feel the heat of the sun,
But, like a blindman
I don't know, i don't know,
I don't know where it's coming from
Be my friend, be my brother,
Be the piper, play the call
Across the seven seas of wonder
Be the guardian of my soul
I need somebody, i need someone,
I need somebody to call my own
Like a blindman, i can feel the heat of the sun,
But, like a blindman
I don't know, i don't know,
I don't know where is coming from
Thinking about this one for a while: almost impossible to pick one-or even a few. Agree with many choices above-esp. 'old Devil called Love', 'Bob Seeger (We got Tonight), 'Lay Lady Lay', 'wichita Lineman'-although 'By the Time I get to Phoenix ' is just as poignant..
Tried to think of a couple that might not spring immediately to mind:
For sheer guts and grit in lyrics, I like just about everything from Lucinda Williams. Try 'Ventura Highway'. ..
'Lean over the toilet bowl
And throw up my confession
Cleanse my soul
Of this hidden obsession.'
'Righteously', also Lucinda Williams, is just about as cutting an indictment of how (some) men treat women as I've come across.
Some of Tim Rice's lyrics are spot on-a reminder that song writing and lyric writing are not always the same thing. 'Tell Me on a Sunday' is a classic.
Folk songs often have beautiful lyrics, not suprising seeing that they are often based on poetry or built around lyrics, not tune. I've mentioned 'The Parting Glass'-Voice Squad-before. I adore 'My Love is Like a Red ,Red Rose..'
And my final three, reflecting my affliction-being an incurable romantic-
'God didn't make those Little Green apples'-Roger Miller
'Stay with me till Dawn'-Judy Tzuke
No 1, all time favorite, 'I Get a Kick Out of You'-Cole Porter. he wrote the best songs of all time and they just don't make 'em like that any more.

So glad to see G'n'R making a couple of apperances already and Dawn's choice of Depeche Modes "Somebody" is completely inspired. If I was wearing a hat I'd take it off to you in praise.
I won't bother boring you with which metal act it is etc (most of you would never have heard of them !) but my favourite couple of lines are by them.
"My quill it aches. Turn loose the swans that drew this poets craft"
or
"So sad, that in our haste, we gather thorns for flowers"
