I don't think totp has ever reflected the real music scene. To youth, music will always be anti establishment .and if a band was on totp then to us they were of no street cred at all. and being the "respectable" BBC , just another thing to rebel against ! .
errrrrrr.............now whilst its a while since i've watch TOTP.......i thought the whole point of the show was for main stream music...........that the public buy, hence it being in the charts........
at the time when i was a 'youth' the word provided an outlet for other less commercial genre's to perform..........and previous to that i believe there was something called 'the tube' (sheddy tells me!)
i think its a bit of a sweeping statement to say that the youth are 'anti establishment' if that were the case 'Steps' would never have had any form of career....!!!!!!!!!!
