Hi
Has anyone got Freeview TV? can you tell me if it works with communial ariels? We have an NTL communial ariel in MK and want to know if it will eork on will I need a seperate ariel?
Any info grateful accepted
Mick
In theory it should work as long as you have a strong signal actually at your outlet, ya may find though, that you recieve more channels if you invest in a digital ariel, argos sell them for about 30 pounds i think.
mad dont talk about freeveiw we carnt get channel 5
Because of the NTL ariel we are not allowed external areils in our part of MK
Mick
Can I mve in with you then debz, I hate channel five lol
we had free view many years ago, had a new ariel and still couldn;t get all the channels mad in my opinion its crap lol

Don't ntl provide a freeview service..?
Marcus.... cool
Don't quote me on this... but as I understand it those communal NTL ariels are actually cable TV, so they won't be picking up the digital signal your freeview box needs. The brief history of the whole thing was MK council wanted everyone to have multichannel TV so they did a deal with NTL to provide basic cable to all houses for a negligable amount of money per month. With the NTL tuner box you get more than the basic 5 channels, so stop whinging ;)
Failing that you might be able to get away with putting an ariel inside of your loft space... assuming you have a loft... and can get a reasonable signal (read bigger ariel).
if you look in the argos book there is a number ther that you can call and they will tell you if you can pick up the service in your area, theres probally a web site that has a listing ??
we have no ntl arial down here , but i can get freeview, all i needed to buy was a freeview box(£30) and a bootser arial from argos for around £7.
oh i will mention that there are probally other good stores that can also provide you with these item's.
if you live in a high rise there may be a communal arial fitted in which case you need to contact the landlord and find out who you pay the subscriptiion charge to to be conected.

There is another aspect to your aerial requirements. If the signal is not strong enought for you digi box to work you haave the right to cause a fuss. If you pay your licence fee you can go into the local post office and ask for a form to complain about your reception. Cant remeber the form number off the top of my head. The arguement goes somthing like: You are paying for a service via your TV licence and therefore if you are not permitted to erect your own receiving equipment then the restricting authorities have an obligation to provide it for you. A council round here just got fined for not suppling a decent siganl to high rise blocks this was under the same law.
Best o luck

confused Why not just contact the service provider? :?
While you are there, ask them if they know any good dogging spots.

If you visit the freeview site you can check the reception in your postcode area.
As for your ntl community system, if it just pipes the signal into your house it will probably give you a strong enough signal for the unit to work.
If you can see the sandy heath transmitter from your place then you can get a signal on an antenna....you will need an antenna cut for the higher frequency and co-ax for it as well...it may work in a loft place, but it isn't an ideal solution........there are 5 digital multiplexers on the sandy heath mast each running about 10kw.
are these booster things any good or not. I've got a really old one for my freeview and it doesn't seem to really boost that much.
I've seen ones that can do gain adjustment. What's that all about does it actually do anything?

I have a signal booster which does work with my analog TV signal... it will also work with digital.
All signal boosters do is amplify the signal, so they also amplify any interferance you areal might be picking up... just like your sterio amplifies the music as well as the hiss on a casette tape.
Variable gain works like the volume control on your sterio it controls how much boost you are using.
I use my signal booster because I am using a long run of coaxial cable and experience some signal loss (i.e. tv connected at areal socket gives good picture... but TV on the other end of cable gives slightly worse picture).
Signal boosters are most often used in this kind of situation or if you are using one areal on two or more TV's.
A signal booster will improve your picture... but if you have a crappy areal or cannot put your areal where it can get a good signal from the transmitter your reception will still be dodgy... better but still dodgy.
When it comes to digital TV you either have a picture or you don't dependant on the quality of the signal recieved by the digibox... if it doesn't get enough picture information to display the channel then it will keep cutting out. So for most people this results in better picture quality... but if you are used to watching TV through heavy snow then you won't be able to get any picture on digital.
A signal booster may be all you need to get digital TV... suggest you go buy one and try it out.... any reputable electronics shop will offer a refund if it doesn't work (and the others like dixons will offer you a refund if you explain your statutory rights)
I notice that well known store A***s say that their digital boxes are exempt from 16 day money back I can understand if it was something to use on your body like a shaver, but a digital box should be the same as a video recorder/dvd player surely?

Because they like to sell £60 digiboxes to people who they know are likely to not be able to recieve digital TV... staff training is so bad they don't have the first clue if you can pick it up... but will happily sell the box. I know one store that was in an area not broadcasting digital at all (this was a while ago) and they were selling digiboxes and claiming you could get it, even when you told them where you lived.
Yep so thats it... a high return rate... technically it infringes your statutory rights, as long as you asked if it was fit for the purpose of recieving digital TV within your house and you explained where you lived and what your current TV reception was like.... or to put it another way.... make enough fuss in the shop and you will get your money back.

Its probably because there is nothing wrong with the box's, its when you set it up, and realise the crap thats on, that you decide you want your money back.

i can wipe out our elsdest son's digibox real easy, but the one on the main telly downstairs refuses to budge.
Even beaming direct at the tv aerial, running the amplifier full chat, not a sausage.
Dawn's hairdrier on the other hand, crackle crackle etc.

smile If you are receiving CHANNEL 5 on your existing ariel you should be able to connect your freeview up, biggrin no problem. My opinion, and it is my own personal opinion FREEVIEW will not be FREE when everyone in the british isles is cut off from analogue tv and forced to go digital. They are doing what SKY did when they started out but you got there boxes FREE, mad remember. Now your paying through the nose for which of not nearly half you will watch every month. lol Oh i do babble on don't i. Hope this helps. cya

Which is fine except the BBC is obligated under its charter to provide free access TV. ITV Channel4 and Channel 5 also spent a lot of money getting licences to broadcast free to the masses. Any joker can get a cable or satilite channel, but these guys spend a fortune making sure their channels are free to view because its the only way they can sell advertising, by promising audience share 50 times that of sky 1.
So you won't see the Free dissappear from Freeview... it wasn't set up to make money that way.
Turning off the analog signal is just a way for the government to make money selling off this part of the spectrum for other uses... just think of the money they made from the 3G licenses... its that all over again.
