At last - the end is nigh for Windows XP
(I won't use a pc with it installed, if you hadn't guessed).
Today, I saw on ebay that beta dvd's of Windows Longhorn are now available.
Anybody got it yet? any good?
Ok, sorry, I'll go crawl back under my stone.

I think saying he stole the idea is a little strong, however it was co developed with Steve Jobs before their split which eventually devoloped into what we today know as microsoft and apple

It was the speccy with rubber keys.. the zx81 had an awful flat, hard keyboard..
BTW, I use XP pro.. its the most stable thing I've used..
I don't like XP, don't know why, we just don't have a happy working relationship  .
I have it at home just cos it was what was on when I bought the PC, but when XP was brought in at work after a few years of NT I resisted and I was the last person in my dept by over a year to have my machine XP'd :smug: .. But sadly the network became so incompatable with NT that I couldn't read emails at work via the network for several months, then other things started to crash too :uhoh: . The technicians just laughed when I complained and XP'd my machine while I was off on leave evil . I must admit that it now works fine and I have now no excuse not to reply to emails rotflmao

I made this excellent apple and blackberry pie last week, it was so tasty.
Unlike the apple crumble I'd made the week before which I dropped all over the kitchen floor shattering the pyrex. Was a complete bastard to clean up mad

Almost the same here... I've had my new pc approved for 6 months, but as soon as the IT department told me I'd be getting XP, I cancelled my request.
Looks like I'll be stuck with the 233Mhz Pentium II for years now. But at least it's got Windows 2000 on it. lol

I loved win2k ...................... absolutely hated the very thought of xp, resisted and resisted, 10 wild horses etc etc
Then someone bought me a brand new shiny pc with loads of gizmos on it, including xp ……………… begrudgingly, I have to say its one of the most stable MS platforms I have ever worked with, including NT??? dunno
Oh hum, guess in the end u just have to move with the times.
I apologise if this may seem a tad dense, but why is there such a bad vibe about Win XP? I haven't had any problems with it so far.
Recommended System Needed for Vista:
256Mb Graphics card
2Gb Ram
NCQ SATA Hard Drive (none of these exist yet)
HDCP Compliant Monitor (none of there exist yet)
and that's just to run the operating system... not to actually have programs running too!
To be honest, I can't see why people dislike XP so much (at least XP pro, never used the home edition). It is after all merely Windows NT 5.1 (Windows 2000 being a posh name for NT 5.0). You can make it look like Windows 2000 if you want to (and I do, just 'cos Microsoft spent so much on the playschool-style default user interface for XP).
Having said that, the only reason I use Windows at all is to play games, if I gave up my addiction to first person shoot-em-ups then I'd have Linux or FreeBSD on my main machine, my laptop's been running Debian GNU/Linux for years now, and I even have a Linux pda (Sharp Zaurus) which is very acceptable.

No.. Microsoft say it only needs this..
Minimum system requirements will not be known until summer 2006 at the earliest. However, these guidelines provide useful estimates:
• 512 megabytes (MB) or more of RAM (most PC's currently have)
• A dedicated graphics card with DirectX® 9.0 support (most PC's currently have)
• A modern, Intel Pentium- or AMD Athlon-based PC. (most PC's currently have)

Since when did Microsoft's minimum system requirements have any relation to what is actually required for a reasonably productive user experience? These are the same people that told everyone it was possible to run Windows 95 on 4MB of RAM.
