Dawn !
I know where you are coming from. I used to be the social secretary for the students Union back in the day ! ( Eeeh when I were a lad ). I used to get free drinks at most bars I frequented cos I brought loads of business in when I organised event's for the college and....well, it was free ! I should have realised it was getting to much when I had a system of changing my shorts ( drink not pants ) after poisoning myself. The fact I was drinking quads in a half pint glass should have been a clue too. However, I was lucky cos I twigged the damage and went to see my doc who checked my bloods and confirmed I'd nearly killed my liver. I knew it was bad when a can of shandy had me hurling for 3 days. Anyhoo. I got put on the wagon for 2 years, not a drop ! I never felt like an alco but I guess I spent too much time in bars due to my social life.
My liver is back to 100% now and I hardly ever drink more than a couple of pints at a time.
But the thing is....my social life never changed !!! just my drinks.
I'm sure you can cope, specially if you got friends around to have fun with.
kiss
The difference between wanting to give up alcohol and having to give up alcohol is great. As children, we are told what to do in every part of our lives. As adults, we like to make our own choices and therefore make our own decisions. I personally find it hard to do what some else tells me to do and I can empathise with you totally as I am trying to give up smoking for health reasons.
Putting things into perspective, if you don't have your health, your quality of life decreases. What is most important to you? :therethere:

I hope that wasn't too heavy and had some relevance? I'm not suggesting that you have an alcohol problem but if you ever fancy a chat just PM me.

I don't have a problem with alcohol but I have a medical condition that needs treating and the drugs for that mean I can no longer drink.
I am only a social drinker anyway so I think the problem for me is being told I can't drink rather that deciding myself that I don't want to drink.
Probably the same as when some people see a sign saying 'wet paint' I feel the need to touch it and check :lol2:
i hear exactly what you're saying- it's because you've not had the choice to stop that makes it hard!
My coach wouldn't allow us to drink during competition training, which at first was hard, but it was soo much easier when I turned it around to a reason that I didn't want to drink for. Maybe you can come up with a reason that makes it seem to you like you've made a choice!
The hardest thing i found was actually ye olde peer pressure- the number of friends on a night out that said 'go on, one won;t hurt' i had to say to them that if i had one for everytime someone tried to get me to have 'just one', then i'd be way past liver failure.
It's strange that as soon as you say you're not drinking everyone takes an interest and tries to get you to drink/doesn't know how you can go out etc!
Did anyone else find this? i found it wasnt my self control, but everyone else making a big deal about things that was the hardest part of not drinking!
I gave up alchol when I first met our Dawnie.
just long enough to say :- Hi hun a kiss then back to my pint. wink
Now Dawn you know thats not true :lol2:

Phredd
Many years ago I developed a condition which required surgery and then the warning 'never drink alcohol again'. After a few months of being totally dry I introduced moderate amounts back into my life and now can drink when I please. Some weeks I don't touch any alchohol and then other weeks I could drink the house dry.. depends on the week! Certainly I'll happily go without a drink whatever the length of time - just last week at a dinner party I didn't touch any cos I wasn't in the mood.
:P
I Think I'm the only person in the World who gave up drinking completely when I went to Uni...
Ermmm... But that's because there was other distractions and no Money...
But like a lot of people have said, it's that word 'NEVER' that makes it a big deal...
"I'll never drink again'
Cos when you think about it.. Most people spend a lot of time Not Drinking...

I would have to say I would find it very difficult to give up completely as we do socialise at weekends and I enjoy having a drink then. If I was told to give up because of health reasons then I would do it like a shot however.... Smoking, now that's a completely different kettle of fish as you know hun sad
You know where I am if you need me  You know it will be worth it in the end though wink

Dawn   I hope whatever the medical condition is its okay !!!!!!!!!!! Drink - god at one time I would have been devastated giving it up but now not so sure as enjoy a drink at the weekends but could leave it - worst bit is when everyone around you is drunk and you are sober lol.
Now 4 and half weeks ago I gave up smoking - now thats an achievement I never thought could happen.
So Shireen BOOTS own patches - they worked for me strength 15 for one week stength 10 second week then none and I was a heavy smoker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck Dawn xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The one thing I lack is the will to want to give up Corrie sad We have a few things going on at the minute which mean I am a little stressed so if I tried I know I would fail *at the minute*
I know there will come a point where I am ready, I am just hoping that Steve will try to give up as well.... He needs to more than me :(
I have just had a thought    If Dawn is going to be sober at the munches etc then she will remember all the things that people got up to redface :lol2:
Shireen.... the distance between us would be no problem if you gave up smoking... in fact if you give up I would be there in a flash.... and I would make you forget about anything and everything else on the planet !!

I have to give up alcohol confused
I can only get away with the very rare glass of wine but I can no longer drink any more than that.
It has made me think about how often I do drink and how many. Its not as much as I first thought but knowing I can no longer drink is wierd.
How would you feel giving up acohol?
Could you?

yes

And think there should have been a WOOF! at the end of duncsters sentence?
:giggle: :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:
Sorry duncster, I couldn't resist it. :giggle:
I'm not a big drinker to be honest but when I do it's normally to excess, but I really should cut down on the bingeing I tend to do. As for could I give it up if I was on my own yes I think so, it's when others around me drink that I feel I have to join in confused

I am not drinking at the moment, the glass is empty.

No I do not drink much. I have been know not to drink weeks but I can take it or leave it. I always drink with other but never to excess.
Sometime's I go month's without having a drinkie poo's and don't miss it.
I must admit though, I can't get drunk anymore, can't handle the hagover's, old age I suppose
