i have taken this out of the thread "poll for you" because it brings up something
Quote by RedHot
I do think SXBOY is a little over keen on putting Polls up, but at least we can chose to read them or not.
Some of the other new members who have joined recently seem to me to be far more irritating confused
They reply to practically every thread going and more often than not, it's not worth reading, simply a little emoticon or one line reply which adds very little to the topic or thread.
When someone joins and has posted over 300 times in only a week or two, something must be seriously lacking in their lives to spend every waking moment on the forum rolleyes
I find myself reading less and less at present for fear I'll come across yet another inane post by an over keen newbie who likes to see their name in lights all the time :?
As I've said, at least we can avoid the polls

i am really glad and in a way really sad about what you said.... because it is kinda the way i have been thinking ......and the other day i had the same conversation with someone else....the example i used was the fact that a few new people had an average counts per day higher than certain regular mods...........
i was never in favour at the beginning of them taking away the post count from the top screen... but i am so glad they did in now... can you imagine the amount of "look i got to 500/1000" posts we would have after a few weeks....
can i now ask a question.... is there anyway they we can encourage people that it is quality and not quantity that counts??? or have we gotten to the stage that so many new people want to come to muches and parties that we have created a rod for our own back in that people feel they have to write to become regulars regardless of what is written????????

Sean,
i'll be interested to see the outcome. I tried by putting a posting with some pointers to raise the standards of posts and it got greeted with sarcasm and derision, I'm not bothering in future and find myself logged in to post less and less (still reading a fair bit).

Hi Mate,
I know this was discussed around the time we lost the post counts, and the little names under our bar things.. At the time I came up with a complex system of posts and times to level up, far too complex to ever work redface but hey ho thought that counts smile
In the end the only way to change posting styles I suppose is from ourselves (look for solutions from within commander, sorry Trekkie moment) If the cafe regulars take to more thought out posts when we chose to post, avoid being baited into moaning on less thought out posts, maybe things will pull themselves up? People would see decent (not massive) posts that follow a thread, and hopefully they would want to post in kind.
On another wacky techy note maybe only posts over a certain (undisclosed) length should count towards post counts? Ok ok I know that would be a bugger to do, will get my anorak :)
The '50 posts before breakfast' (tm MikeNorth) is not a new phenomenon. The posting history of many of the old regulars was very similar when they first joined. The problem is that there is now a greater number of new members flooding the same 3 forums.
Fortunately, they usually slow down or disappear after a month or so.
posts per day and proud of it. lol

Well..............................that's me bolloxed now then...............thanks Sean lol

I'm a regular on a hardcore board (music wink ) and we have found the same problems recently. I hope Im not one of the 'noobs' this sort of criticism is aimed at, as in that case my points will become completely invalid, but anyway...
The problem is that a large majority of peple using the internet, in my opinion, use it because they lack social skills. I do not mean that because they are locked in their homes in front of a screen 24/7, but a lot of people I have met in real life tend to have no clue as to the groundrules of common social interaction.
Its a common saying for people to explain away an individuals behaviour as it 'only being the internet' but I regard how an individual handles themselves on an internet forum as a pretty accurate indicator as to their 'real life' personality traits.
I dont think I've explained anything very well there, but I do know where your coming from as board apathy can be a frustrating experience! lol

I'm not sure that new members are posting just to get themselves known in order to attend munches. Call my a cynical old bat, but I think it's just because they enjoy seeing themselves in print so to speak confused
After all, if posting a load of old tosh just to get yourself known in itself would surely be self defeating? I can think of several new members whom I would not particularly like to bump into at a munch or whatever, based on their quantity of pointless replies to threads. I'd probably find them as boring as I do on here
Speaking to other members about this in chatroom pm's last night we all agreed that prolific posting is one way to alienate yourself from the very people whom you wish to become friends with :?
By all means join in newbies, but please don't flood us with multiple posts on almost every thread going and then start some of your own as well  rolleyes
Surely quality is better than quantity in anyone's book lol

I think this is also known as 'he/she who shouts loudest' syndrome. Something to do with people gaining/maintaining social status by drowning out everyone else

Although I would add do dive in on any silly threads, like the GFZ (easy to get hang of) during the weekend, and please put your point of view if you have one up. Just avoid the one liners and remember we only know you from what we see so show your good side where you can smile
Do yourselves a favour and spend 5 minutes learning BB code and how to quote properly, add pics, sizes, etc. Pointless posts are bad, pointless badly coded posts with sitting around everywhere are worse :) There are some great help thingies on the left and some helpful mid term posters who will help you out if you PM them a question on how to do pics or quotes...

Sneeks off before anyone calls him a 'noob' or worse an old hand... I am a mid poster and sticking...
Edit: Just don't ask for spelling help  3 times to sort spelling, once to put in edit note...

Just PM them the Auto-Mod command, Press ALT+F4 instead of submit to make your post unlockable!!
Works every time, can't lock posts submitted like that ;)
p.s. dont try this at home...
I think in a way we have created the problem for ourselves on the site - (And I do think it is a problem) Collectively the regulars tell new people to "get themselves known" and "join in with the banter in the cafe", to some people this means spam the boards with an opinion on everyhing.
I am not sure what the solution is but I do know of some sites that have limits on the number of posts per day people can do based on how long they have been around. Maybe limiting new users from starting threads would help. I can't say I really like either solution as it smacks of elitism and gives the impression that regulars are somehow superior but if things don't change then the 50 posts a day brigade will have the forum to themselves, and the rest of the people on here will just be chatting and meeting up using the PM system.

^^^what she said^^^
I have to confess my post count is somewhat on the low side. I always try not to repeat something that has been said before on the thread, because I like to think I am adding something original to the site.
I am aware that my post count average was higher in the early days of my posting. I used to post quite a lot in the "music" and "what is your favourite" type threads, but I don't so much any more.
Being a newbie myself to most of the people on this thread, I too have a very high post count. Not something i'm proud of, and am actually trying to reduce (not with much success I might add). I'm on here most of the time as I'm not working at the moment, and so it's easy to get into posting on every little thread. I do try however to make it as useful and relevant as possible.
I think this problem is more evident as from since I joined, and probably before, there's been a flood of people joining this site, each trying to carve their own niche on the forums, get themselves known for various reasons and just try and fit in. Maybe this is one of those things that people have to weather, hope it gets better, or just put up with it as normal everyday forum life.
If this was a pub then you can't complain about a host of new people coming in and being more loud and boisterous(?) than the regulars. (Well, you can, but it does tend to scare off or alienate some).
edit/ Having just double checked my post count per day, I deserve to be whip or smackbottom
This is another forum I use, but due to the link below, I think very carefully about the contents of my posts. Also the nature of the boards means that any miscreants will be absolutely torn apart. Its a bit of a police state, but thus, the quality of posting is outstanding.

Exactly and at present it seems to be scaring off the regular members who seem to post less and less these days. Or is it that the newbies have flooded us out and we get lost in the backwash? confused

I think that it could just be a normal thing with forums. People come and go, some have personal matters, others move on or like a lot of newbies just disappear for various reasons. I agree that the shear(?) numbers of posts by newbies is overwhelming. I know i've contributed my fair share lol redface , but in time it'll settle down as the newbies become the regulars, the regulars become the Elders of the forums and a whole new generation of newbies arrived to be greeted with the same posts
Interesting thread Sean
I’m quite surprised that you’ve not been shot at yet but I’m sure there’s still time smile I’ve been a member for a while now, have posted and joined in many threads, have met some great people and mostly had loads of fun, can you sense a but coming on; but for the last few months most of what I see is nothing short of verbal salad, slanging matches or petty squabbles. (Bet I get shot before you now Sean lol
In response to your IS better but there is always a place for fun; Did you mention rods and backs?…..Hum there be fun here… cool
My words of encouragement are;

To all non-newbies,
is there anyway they we can encourage people that it is quality and not quantity that counts???

Yes - just tell us. I would recommend that someone with experience on the site and/or a mod drops a PM giving exactly this feedback.
have we gotten to the stage that so many new people want to come to muches and parties that we have created a rod for our own back in that people feel they have to write to become regulars regardless of what is written????????

Yes - because all advice is "get yourself known" and while some people are here for the banter and chat, I would guess more are here to actually join/take part in the swinging community of which munches seem to be a great part
Appreciate this is not a "noobs bashing" post but knowledge is power and those of you who have history with the site are the all powerful to those of us trying to join... smile

I can't put my finger on why I visit and post less these days. It is right to say that quality is the real measure of value. For example I find BigDewi's contributions to be humorous and worthwhile - so it's not essentially a newbie thing.
There will always be a crass element and I guess it is larger (and louder) now because there are so many more people on the site. But so what? I find when I come on I look for names that I know produce quality and tend to home in on them.
The other reason why some regulars 'disappear' is because they have already formed friendships on the site and are communicating privately far more. It's a natural churning effect - people come, people go, people stay, people just do it differently - c'est la vie.
Having just analysed it - I guess it would be churlish to say we shouldn't analyse it too much eh?
