SAVE CAMDEN MARKET!!
Camden Council have given the go ahead for the wrecking balls to go in and destroy Stables Market in Camden.
This means the end of The Proud Galleries (served notice closing in a couple of weeks), the funky, vintage stores, Cyberdog, etc - you get the gist - one of the best things in all of London is about to be taken away from us.
What are they putting in it place? Boots, H&M and Topshop. Why should we let trendy bullshit chain stores ruin our alternative culture and lifestyle in london.
PLEASE help us stop them from doing this by signing the petition:
good call!!!
one of the few places remainingin London that hasn't been completely High Streetised!!
I don't go that often any more.... though it is a place worthy of protection!
lp
That would be such a shame to spoil it.I love shopping at Camden, its my favorite place in London, its got such character and life!
All signed and delivered!
xanaisx
20 years since i've been and i feel guilty i've not taken the Mrs shopping/browsing in Camden. I eally hope this does some good.
likewise - signed with a little passion
Damn council mad I really liked having a mooch round Camden when I was working in the area  .
We canceled our trip to London & went to Cornwall instead earlier this year looks like i'll never get the chance to take Stileto to see the market now  .
would lose so much charachter....i love going down on a sunday morning to camden market....signed.
I am "... now signed up to this petition. Thank you." I loved wandering round the market when I lived in London.
If it does get destroyed, come and visit the funky old arcades in lovely Cardiff instead - it hasn't yet had all its character annihilated by the chain-store massacre.
SAVE CAMDEN MARKET!!
To be honest, never been there, actually as a matter of fact dont even know where it is, but since I believe that these days councils are more interested on money (maybe new shops will pay more taxes than the old ones), I was glad to sign the petion.
Noooo!
Many, many years ago, when Mr W was driving HGV's, myself & eldest went with him to do a drop in Camden. Long story short- but bound on brakes meant we spent a sweltering 2 days cooped up in his cab with our 1year old daughter, in a small residential side street, about a mile from the market.
The people-bearing in mind they had a 40ft lorry inches from their windows too- were just amazing! They took turns making us cold drinks, letting us use their bathrooms, giving us baby books and toys etc. I will never forget the kindness we saw there. I spent best part of the time walking (carrying sprog) back & forth to the market- and loved it, the character, the colours and the people.
Deeply saddened by this. But, of course, where would we be without another "Boots?" mad
I am saddened to hear this. Another little piece of the nations charactor destroyed in the relentless march towards global blandness.
I'm sure London needs another Starbucks, Tescos, M&S
ive signed also......one in the eye for big business and fat cats....
Just got back from London ( went to see thr Rolling Stones @O2 won the tickets )Went to Camden on Wed, Seems to me that it is just greedy companies wanting to make more money, Look what has happend to Kings Rd Chelsea & Carnaby Street,The whole look and the feel of thoes places has gone now, So lets stop that going on in Camden
Signed
you'll probably find that the developers have alreadyput in thier £-sign tenders for the land, and projection for higher revenue from rates etc etc... and a strapped council like Camden will be have thier eyes filled with said *signs*....
consider it a done deal... if the prospect has already been raised, even if *compromise* is tendered... the place is sure to change.
downer?... me? soz!
Now that the place has be mentioned though... I may take a stroll around the old place today... via the canal from Kings Cross... lovely walk
another bad one, for me at least, and my own personal bit of London Colour ... was the loss of The Intrepid Fox in Soho... that had a large online petition also...all for nothing in the end... the placeno longer suited the plans of the moneymakers...
lp
I have signed it. Someone needs to let all the students unions in colleges and Uni's know somehow so that they sign up to this. Its crass. Agree LP that decision will have been taken but pressure stil makes a difference.

Or perhaps not!
I signed an online petition to prevent the closure of our local sports complex- it was built for when the commonwealth games were last held in Edinburgh, and is huge, if not a bit dated, but perfectly functionable.
The council had already bought land in the opposite side of Edinburgh, and started building a new sports complex.
In order to fund this, it would mean knocking down the current one at my end of town to sell the land for flat building rolleyes mad
This was all planned and actioned well before discussion with the people it would affect- the current users.
It would mean there would be no suitable facility for sports in the East of the city, and people would have to travel at least 45 mins (by car- public transport longer) if they wanted to train at the new facility (which is actually going to be smaller)In this day and age of encouraging healthy lifestyle, targeting childhood obesity etc, I imagine only the most dedicated would be the ones travelling, not the ones who really need pushed to participate!
Anyway, you can see how annoyed people would be at that- so we petitioned and have won! (if you call it winning?!)
The centre will remain, and the council will have to find money for upgrades!
So even though we thought demolition was a done deal, if enough speak up, you can make a difference!!
This works, so get signing!
(Never been to Camden though)
