a week on and this is what the council say about our bins
'Disrupted Collection Service of Refuse and Recycling Bins – 5th February 2009
As a result of the adverse weather conditions on Thursday 5th February 2009, the decision was taken to suspend the collection of refuse and recycling bins on this day.
This decision was made at 7am as it was deemed unsafe to send the vehicles and loaders out on the rounds which may also have caused unnecessary risk to residents and other road users.
To prevent further disruption to the service for the Borough, and not knowing to what extent the snow would affect other collection days, the decision was made that the affected bins would not be collected until the next scheduled collection day – 19th February 2009.
On the 19th February 2009 the relevant bins will be collected with up to three bags of side waste – this applies to the green and blue bins only as side waste cannot be taken from beside the brown bins. The bags placed out at the side of the blue bins should contain co-mingled recycled including the paper (this does not need to be separated on this occasion).
Alternatively, you may want to use the recycling sites at the main supermarket sites or the Household Waste Recycling Centres at St Albans Road, Stafford and Beacon Road, Stone.'
so we had a bit of snow.. now we will have plenty of rats...what ever happened to paying a bit of overtime?
no disruption as no snow
Ordinarily i would say "bunch of pussies - just get on with it"....however i attended a management development course on Monday regarding H&S at Work Act and how, as managers, we have a 'Duty of Care' for our employees.
Taking this duty of care into consideration and also depending on what road conditions are like down your way, then the managers have got it right. All it takes is for 1 of the operatives emptying bins to slip, fall into the path of an oncoming car and get hit and die, and said managers suddenly become liable under the 'Corporate Manslaughter & Homicide Act' and end up facing a sizeable fine and/or prison sentence.
This duty of care issue has certainly opened my eyes to what i will, wont & cant ask my lads to do now at work, its just not worth the risk!
Absolutely Coupleseekfun. We took delivery of an artic filled with 30 odd tonnes of steel in packs up to 2 tonnes in weight. Before we could let the truck into the yard we share with 4 other industrial units, or let our forklift driver anywhere near it, we had to spend 2 hours clearing 3 inch deep snow and spreading grit until the yard was completely free of ice over an area of around 200 square metres. The possibility of damage to property, serious injury or death were too obvious for us not to have done that and got away with it. I'd agree with the councils call on the bins myself.
Neil x x x ;)
4 weeks of no bin being emptied ffs..it was bad enough when they decided last summer that it would now be the norm to have our bins emptied fortnightly all in the name of recycling..
i know about health and safety issues although its getting past a joke imo.. this isnt about that its about the council not making other arrangements since the snow went and just saying stuff the people, we will empty the bins as we always do..let them wait another couple of weeks..rant over
No effect what so ever. Well we did look over the valley with doom in our minds, but on we went. We hoped that a tree would stop us going to far, and we did not relish walking far. However we drove up into the mountains and out again.
When we got home and found that the whole nation had come to a halt, all for a few inches of snow, it must have mostly melted by Saturday.
Plenty of snow here and icy still.
The bin men have been they were later than normal is the normal time, today they arrived after 3pm approx. And last week the recycling men came as well.
The postman has been as well only missed one day, he has left his dog at home, and is STILL wearing shorts!!
well for the 1st time ever our bags of rubbish(our council prefer bags to bins)were collected promptly ie one day late and we did have quite a bit of snow..so thankfully no rats but then the cats in the area would have been overjoyed lol
Thank goodness it's cold and the waste shouldn't get too bad. Hope it stays -5 to +5 for the duration (in the case of uncollected rubbish).
For what it's worth. I would put any food waste in the wheelie bin and only dry, non-food waste in the side bags. Not ideal, but better than nothing.
Snow and loads of it and still do in areas.
We live in the Yorkshire Dales and we must be lucky with our council cos we have had our bins emptied (still weekly)at exactly the same time and day as normal, the roads have been gritted and re gritted all day and night and hey we still have not run out of grit either.
Yes i was late for work on a few ocassions but due to the fact that the majority of people do not know how to drive in snow (does anyone else think some sort of snow driving training should be given before you pass your test?).
Yes some of the schools closed but not due to the teachers wanting a day off as most of them still turned in but because of the duty of care issues and the health and safety rules.
just too far for us to go for the day .. but sometimes the snow can be wonderful
Well, I had a wonderful time. We had 2 feet of snow and, for the last 2 days, bright blue skies & sunshine. Too good an aopportunity to miss, we went out, I got my kit off and we did some really nice photos. It was very cold but well worth it - great fun.
BTW, the bins got emptied (good news) but a wine delivery was delayed (not such good news!).

We good not get home for a day and a half last week, as the only route in to our rural home was closed!
