Btw, the textbook was BASIC Language Programming for the Beginner by Crabtree, Stack & Smith (first printing in '84). Had lots of fun with that one, including acronyms such as CRAP ("CRAsh Proof"), TURD ("Totally Un-Readable Documentation") and RUM (a distilled beverage made from fermented cane products).
~Reese! surprised

Hail Oh mighty one.worship :worship: :worship: :worship:
I remember reading that!!! I may even have it in my attic somewhere as I never chuck anything away..
I had an Apple 2e with 48K RAM, only upper case, and only monochrome, and learnt to program in Basic. In fact I've still got the Apple, along with a Commodore Pet up there somewhere. AND they still work.
Now teach Visual Basic Programming, and I'm not bad. ALL thanks to good old Reese.
It's a small world.

At Grammar school I was distinctly average.. The only subjects I did well in where the ones I loved.. History, English and Geography.. Plus any sport going..
I left with 4 O Levels
Have worked in IT since 17 and rose to Departmental Director. Big job, very well paid.. blah, blah, blah
I left it last year (with a severance payoff)_ and am taking a year out to improve my awful golf game and spend more time with my son.
When I go back to work (and hopefully someone will give me a job) it will be for something that will not kill me, stress me out to the max or make me dread going in to the office.

Funny isn't it Paul.
If we left school with only those qualifications now - we wouldn't have a hope of getting into our industry!
I fully understand what you say about stress though - I think that is why I come on here so regularly - essential stress relief!
Muah, Alex x
You are right. We would not have any hope.
The funny thing is that as a sideline to my proper job I ran the IT graduate programme for a couple of years.. Loved it. But some of the graduates just lived on another planet... And, what really pissed me off is that we started them on £27k !!!! FFS (tm) that is obscene

And it's the fact that they now EXPECT to bypass having to gain commercial experience BECAUSE they have a degree.
(can you tell this degree thing is a bit of a sore point with me?)
I totally undestand. You should have seen the crap I had to study to `be an artist`
Bollocks to taking that further. I`ll let the masses decide.

didn't have the stamina . . . . . ahem . . . .to get the B.A. in Coronation Street and PostModern BladeRunnerish Textual Analysis / Cultural Studies / Lit Theory type stuff. :P

Yeah well I did have the stamina and I got a 1st in Media and English. "PostModern BladeRunnerish Textual Analysis" is my forte and that's exactly what I did for my dissertation. Yes and I was the only person on my course covering the "cyberpunk" genre - I'd like to think I started a trend! I also did essays on sex lifestyle magazines, 60s/70's porn and S&M for my cultural studies.
I've also got a postgraduate diploma in Geographical Information Systems which is a computer degree. But that's another story.
I left school with a couple of CSEs and only started university as a mature student in my 30s. Being at university taught me how to think, analyse and present an argument on paper. Sadly, that's all it has done for me and I have not reaped any of the rewards I thought having a degree would bring me - yet! Instead I have a massive debt which I doubt I shall ever be able to pay off unless I can find work that pays for a change!
Having a degree means nothing these days as they are common and as a consequence have become devalued. Once upon a time it meant something to have a degree no matter what it was and you could walk into almost any job. I have come to the conclusion that one needs to have more than an education to get on these days as the competiton is large and having experience and 'street smarts' will get you further in life.

Built my own ZX80

nope! but i was very proud of the horse-racing game i wrote for the ZX81, which needed a precariously balanced 16k thing on the back, with an animated black square as ya horsey!

there was a stunningly attractive girlie on mine, who did most of her stuff on the cultural significance of porn. surprisingly, she was rather popular!
