I have been lucky enough to have had an old fashioned schooling, where spelling, grammar and punctuation were an essential part of the education.
I was also an attentive student, I wasn't ill very often, and so I gained the most out of the school system.
Not everyone has been as lucky as me.
For some time now I have been getting increasing annoyed at posts being criticised because of the author's spelling.
In another thread, after being pulled up for his spelling, a poster has defended himself, saying that he is dyslexic. This is followed by a critical post, about people "claiming to be dyslexic".
Now my point is this -
Everyone on this forum has a right to agree, disagree, or debate someone else's point of view.
But does anyone on this forum have the right to criticise, make fun of, or belittle someone's post purely because of the spelling?
Not in my opinion.
I don't think it makes any difference really in the forum as to grammar spelling etc., to be honest we're all here for one purpose and that's to have fun.
The forum has all types of people from highly educated to not so, it makes no difference to me whatsoever. It's your thoughts that matter and you don't always have to have had an education to use common sense or have your own views.
In reality though it's a different story, unfortunately society is not so accepting.
One day sexy admin will give us spell check, like on their other sites!!
:bounce:
I don't pick people up for spelling and grammar mistakes, although I try to make the effort to word my posts correctly. If someone is less skilled in this area or has a condition such as dyslexia, it's just part of who they are.
What I don't like though, is text-speak....that's just laziness
Well thanks Suziuk, but that's the question I'm asking!
A long time ago I wouldn't post in certain threads or behind certain other forum members for fear of them picking my posts apart. My confidence has been poor on the forum at times because I have to fight to get words in the right order and I can't spell. I love Word
It pisses me off at the amount of times I see people being pulled up for spelling or punctuation. It doesn't mean they can't hold a perfectly good conversation and wouldn't make me not want to shag them.
It's important to some and not important to others - I'd say that about sums it up succinctly. For me it's one indication as to who I have something in common with, although not always.
Oh, and my post about people claiming to be dyslexic is based on people who appear to be lazy and then blame dyslexia. Similar to those who are a bit fed up saying that they are suffering with depression.
Whilst its supposed to be ideal to be well educated and good at spelling etc. Is it possible that being so could also be considered as having a 'condition' ?
fook me lifes to short as long as i get my message across it dont really mnatter to me or the people im chatting with like another thread on her i added to if the first and last letters r rite most peeps can read it and yes its pcs and texting that makes us shorten words and maybe lazy too
By reading Cherrytree's original post I have deduced that there are two questions to be answered.
1. "How important is correct spelling on this forum?"
2. "...does anyone on this forum have the right to criticise, make fun of, or belittle someone's post purely because of the spelling?"
As to the first question, correct spelling on the forum for me is not that important - sometimes the words flow quicker than the brain can spell or fingers can type. I would hate to see replies "lose heat" if they are too meticulously checked first. However, correct spelling in a PM is very important. To me, poor spelling and text speak denote laziness of thought and action - not the kind of person I would care to have truck with.
As to the second question - my answer is yes, absolutely. I would fight to the death for my freedom of speech, which has been battered enough by today's pc brigade. Saying that, I wouldn't bother criticising anyone's post for poor spelling - I'd just sit back and chuckle at the thicky to myself. Now, if you'll excuse me - I have a busy weekend of Dwarf Throwing and fox hunting.
It is probably fair to correct someone who has already demonstrated sufficient ability to spell accurately. But not so someone who clearly has a poor grasp of the language. Unless they accept it.
Its a bit like having to tolerate a foreigner who has only just begun to learn English. You know they are bright and brainy, but they just don't have the tools to do the job. One would also be in the same boat in their country.
Or perhaps its like being colour blind. Most people agree on the same colour. Except with the colour blind it becomes apparent under certain circumstances, and subsequently can cause confusion.
eye muste admite my speling lets me down somtims.
