A Rag & Bone man for a long time (I admit that being in work all day could be the reason for this)..however, don't they work weekends anymore...do they still exist..?
As a teeny bopper...on saturday evenings..I used to look forward to the arrival of the Alpine Van..(soft drinks Co. / distributor.....cream soda was the fave in this household).....has the Co. gone bust...?
What else don't you see anymore....?
CC...... cool
Don't see many milkman about nowadays.

I was gonna include Milkmen...honest....if you do see them, they're in a cut and shut transit van...I love the old milk floats..electric I think..!!
CC..... cool
Rag & Bone men haven't disappeared, they've all moved to South Shields. lol
We had a skip in our back lane a few weeks ago to fill with rubble, a rotten shed, mouldy carpets and the old bath and boiler. It was being picked over for scrap at least once a day, in fact one day I saw it being examined by three different groups - the first had all the brass and copper, the second wandered off with all the steel he could get out without too much trouble (I think he'd been following the first one around all morning), and the third lot sniffed around for a bit before driving off looking disappointed.
i thought it was time to buy some new clothes so was clearing out my wardrobe and just asking myself exactly the same............where have all the rag and bone men gone ?
there used to be the milkman, the popman, the breadman, the coalman, the mobile shop.
slowly slipping into history feel us go...............
ay...........i feel a song coming on................
one of those days in england mum was rustling up the grub
and dad was off out propping up the pub
one of those days in england that you just could not forget
from the mists of secret morning to the golden red sunset
and though the time fast slips away
it's long enough to laugh and play
around the fireside making hay
dreaming of tomorrow
you know there's no today
And lets not forget the Corona lorry where you could hand the bottles back and get some money ;)

Brilliant....and reminds of my dad saying there was 50p (a lot of money at the time....I was about 14 yrs of age) in the bin.....I trawled through the bin for 20 mins or so and came back empty (pardon the pun) handed. He walked over, stood half a dozen bottles in a line and said.....here's your 50p....!!!

OMG now you are making me feel old lol Bit like today at work where my boss was trying to explain to one of the other people in our office who Freddie Laker was
We still have rag and bone men come round by us on a regular basis, the only problem is that they no longer take old white goods like washing machines etc sad

There are no chimney sweeps either and thankfully very few coalmen because we have central heating now. Thank heavens the so called good old days are behind us and thats exactly what is so good about them, the fact that they have gone.
I saw my mum struggle with a coal fire, a dolly tub, a hand mangle and a carpet beater for too many years. I have central heating a Dyson and a washing machine, a dishwasher and around 200 channels of cable television and broadband. A land-line phone and a mobile phone. Not to mention constant hot water and a state of the art shower. Her entertainment was a late night read of the daily newspaper and a play on the radio. Wonderful thing progress.
Jude.

I agree....obviously....and it's good to see, that what we take for granted today, people have struggled with/for in the past.

Hmm I agree with most but if I do say so myself the thought of a coal fire is quite appealing to me. I also liked the twin tub as a kid not that I would want to use one now but still it holds a place for me. As for 200 channels of cable tv? let be honest your mum got better entertainment from her daily paper and the radio :karaoke:
So what you dont see anymore? being joker I will say people running about in the street collecting horse shit rolleyes being serious I will say no more flying concorde  living in Bristol thats a part of life that is still sadly missed. Being realy old I will say errmm people flitting everything in spring including the cat :!: or so my mum says so if your that old save some energy and dont reply

i do agree with you on most of that judytv but have to disagree with the coal fire though! yeah i know its clean & heat on demand etc etc but there is nothing as warming & as romantic as an open fire smile maybe its just me but thats what i grew up with & in my humble oppinion i love to see the flames licking around the logs & the shadows they cast brings back some very happy memorys :) :)
p.s. wish i could get broadband ive not got it in my area yet sad but hay its only the middle of southampton!

offtopic I know but from a previous forum I posted at I know you can start a list at BT and if you get over X amount of signatures on the list they have to install BB in your area.
Mr Tweeky
thank you tweeky but unfortunatly im not with bt im with ntl, it covers my tv as well, they keep telling me it will be here soon but have been waiting for over a year now confused
maybe its time to move back to devon/dorset biggrin :D

just let me know if you need a hand looking for it wink im sure i could help
Still a little off topic, but lovejoy, I work quite closely with that particular cablr/broadband provider and after their financial problems a few years ago they have noplans to lay any new cabling in the near future as they are investing in upgrading the current infrastructure and trying to keep hold of the customers they already have, I really would look elsewhere for a BB provider but you will need a BT line but you don't have to use them as your telecomms provide. Check out martin lewis' money tips site for alternatives that cost much less than BT.
Back on topic though I haven't seen any silver cross prams for many a year I really wanted one when my little people came along ,couldn't find one anywhere.

Perhaps if you tried getting out of bed before dinner time, you would see a milk man, I see one every day on my way to work at and very often nearly run over the kid who helps him out lol

I know at 6:30 it's a bit tricky but I'm sure that if you tried just that little bit harder you'd get him!

You have obviously not seen my driving, or even worse, me at !!! As for hitting him, I am sure that with a bit of practice I could manage it, lol
Freegrazing shepherds
no honestly, where I grew up every spring the shepherds would set off on thier wonderings freegrazing thier flocks, they used to come up the hilside right past our door. My grandad used to go out and collect all the sheeps*** for the garden.
Then in the autumn they would retun back down into the lowlands.
what else?
oh yeah the Corona man ............. I knoew some naughty little boys who used to nick empties off the back of the van, take them round the front and get paid for them redface
We still have a coal fire rolleyes its dirty smelly, a pain in the neck to clean out every few days, but it does look good, its warm, and it heats trhe water and the central heating so its not all bad. biggrin
What about the guy that used to come round in his rusty old van flogging knock offs? never se him anymore.
We still have a coal fire,(gas has not yet reached our far flung corner of deepest Kent!) yip dirty & smelly & an utter pain......but lovely to snuggle in front of. Just before you realise that its all choked up, needs emptying & its at night, and the snuggle turns into cries of" I did it last time".
One thing Ive not seen in ages, but would love to find as a m8 of mine thinks im imagining things is.....Horlicks tablets!
Any ideas?
