not sure how to explain this without sounding a total muppet lol but never mind here we go. i am in a non cable area and have something called virgin beyond cable (yes i know its naff) today msn went down and i was left without no internet grrrrr. when i connect to the internet my msn signs in and i access the internet via it. i even set my home page to virgin media today desperate to get on the internet and all i got was web page unavailable. is there another way to sort my connection so if msn goes down again i will still be able to access the internet??? yep i know im thick lol and dont understand how to use it lol lol lol
you could get yourself a mobile broadband toggle.
As far as i can read 'Beyond Cable' is just an ADSL line provided by BT so I don't think you connect through MSN. It may be any number of reasons for your connection being down. Your first port of call should be to see if BT are reporting any problems around your area with broadband (just do a Google search for BT Broadband Status). Chances are there is just a temporary glitch with their servers lines etc.
Of course it could be something wrong with your own settings that is preventing the pages from loading in which case you'd have to tell us a bit more in order to help
ok i will try and explain this a bit better lol told ya i was thick......
ok it is an adsl whats it thing lol that goes down a bt line but my internet service provider is virgin if that makes sense lol.
when i start my lappy i connect via a speedtouch connection/modem whatever its called once this is connected my msn pops up and signs me in automatically once im signed into msn i check my emails ect as this is my main email addy then i just use the internet that way. when msn went down today i tried to get on the internet using internet explorer and my homepage on that was msn, as i couldnt connect to that i thought if i set virgin as my homepage it would bypass msn (hope your keeping up here lol) but that didnt work it just kept saying web page unavailable and that i wasnt connected to the internet even though my speedtouch connection was telling me i was. ive connected to the internet this way for the last year but it seems everytime msn goes down i just cant connect to the internet. hope thats clearer lol
biggrin okey dokey . Well Msn has nothing to do with your connection at all. You should be able to type any website address into your address bar at the top of Internet explorer and get to that site if your connection is working. Try something reliable like or If it still returns cannot display web page then you are not getting the adsl signal most likely.
It sounds like the famous cop out but Speedtouch modems (we have one) need fairly frequent rebooting. So reboot your computer completely and while thats restarting restart your speedtouch (take the power cable completely out and count to ten before you put it back in)then try again . x
ok thanks will try that as the lappy came soooooooo close to a nice new home in the garden lol xxxx
Yers Im a big fan of unplugging modems and letting em cool down.
i had loads of problems with my speedtouch modem with the cable always breaking but when i bought a different cable it was more stable.
The problem may have been further up the network than the link from your Speedtouch to the exchange. The modem can be showing all of the correct lights, but sometimes the link from your BT exchange to the core network can go down.
If that happens then you're stuck as you have no way of bypassing the BT systems. However, if something up in the network goes down, alarms alert the engineers automatically, they can re-route traffic and service is restored automagically.
Something else that can affect your connection is if you are using a wireless router in an area where there are lots of other wireles LANs in use, such as a block of flats. Often the modems are shipped all set to the same radio channel number, so the signals can be corrupted by radio transmissions from another modem.
Im guessing it worked cos she shows online now
once my msn came back up it was fine lol grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I think your MSN came back up because it was fine :-) chickens ,eggs whatever glad its working

Rebooting the router and the computer tends to sort the prob 9 times out of 10. Well in my case it does lol

If all the light are showing on the modem it means that it can see the isp's server. More likely there is a server glitch stopping you getting beyond that. I am with AOL and its gone down a few times and reappears a few hours later.
My msn has been down all day but still had internet access! rolleyes
No cable in West Brom? i thought they had most of the West Midlands covered dunno
