As you may (or may not!) know I have a laptop which I'm in the processing of 'cleaning out' all files so I can put in a new hard drive and then possibly flog it off.
However, I've come across a sticky problem with moving my ITunes music folder. I've got about 22Gb of music in a folder, which I've backed up to a separate hard drive. The problem comes when I try to move/copy the folder onto my new lappy. I've downloaded the latest version of ITunes and I've checked out their FAQ's for transferring music but still it's not working the way I need it to.
None of the music has been downloaded, it's all tracks from my CDs, so it's not restricted in any way. What's happening is that once I copy/move the folder containing the music across to the ITunes library. It shows as being there in ITunes, but I can only play it if I'm still connected to the remote hard drive. As soon as I disconnect, the tracks still show, but don't play!
I then tried something else (don't ask me what!) which did work in that the music played even when the remote hard drive was removed, but all tracks were duplicated!! So instead of having 22Gb I now had 44Gb!
I then deleted all 44Gb to try and start again, but somewhere along the line I've still got 22GB of music on my lappy which doesn't connect with my ITunes and I can't find it to delete it!
Now I've tried again to get the music on ITunes and have 22Gb, but it comes up with
"the song can not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it?"
I can't go through nearly 500 albums and every track on every album to find the files, it would take forever!!
I'm running Windows Vista Home premium if that makes any difference.
Any help please? It's driving me nuts!! confused
thanks

This is where I long for tech savvy-ness... :therethere: Mal. Hope it gets fixed soon.
??
Bear with me, I have just woken up.
No idea if this will work or not, so try deleting itunes on the new machine, then adding the music folder, and then changing the name of the main folder so it does not contain any reference to itunes, then reinstall itunes, and then set it to search for music.
Good luck with that. Twice I've had to delete my iPod and restore it to the factory settings because I've used a different laptop. confused
I assume it's to stop the sharing of music but I couldn't transfer my library from my mum's laptop to mine so that was the first restore. I had to then put all my CDs onto my laptop manually.
Much as I love my iPod they're not very user friendly for updating your music. Sorry, can't be much help to you, if you get it sorted can you share how you did it please?

chose free and wait a few seconds then download
I do not have this player, but they work in much the same way. Try this first remove everything from the library. Second make sure you have copied the tracks to your new laptop. The correct drive is normally 'C'. The best place for it is ether 'my music' or 'public music'. Remove the old hard drive. and any other removable memory.
Next have your player search and import all music on on your lap top. Note most, if not all players do not move copy or effect your music files. All they do is list the files along with a reference location. This means that if the location is a removable drive and not connected the file can not be played.
Good luck.

Mal try quitting from iTunes. Then relaunch the app while pressing the option (alt) key. A dialogue box should come up asking you which library you'd like to use. Then browse to the iTunes folder you wish to use.
It may be slightly different on Vista but that's the basic principle.
