Is the word FAGGOT - in this context - offensive to you?

I LOVE faggots!!!!! (meatballs) biggrin
Do I find the term faggot offensive? YES! unless you are referring to the meat product.
Do I find the term offensive? YES!
Sorry but I do! kiss

The first time I heard the word was when I came down to Brighton aged 16. It was one of the guys on the building site where I worked telling me he was one.
Its like many other words, can be an insult depending who says it.
It is about time people stopped being offended by words.

BBC Radio have the most amazing double-standards anyway, because if they are that against the use of pejorative words they would refer to a certain American hip-hop band as NWA instead of Niggas With Attitude which they often do late at night.
Mind you the "offending" presenter is black, so it is probably OK for him to say it. rolleyes
Maybe, if all the daytime presenters were gay, it would be OK to play songs that use a whole range of pejorative words for gay people like "faggot" too ???
dunno
Just a thought.

This is an arguement that's is always brought up to justify the ironic use of " " by rap stars, and by the way don't panic people I'm black so I guess I don't have to use the asterix.(?)
However this is illogical. If a word or phrase is deemed offensive then nobody should use it. For instance is the fact that a black person says "kill all niggers" any less offensive? Our a gay person saying " hang all faggots"? Of course not, both are offensive.
This surely should be the real discussion(?)
Ironic? Oh, is that what it is?
That's OK then.
I don't think the word is any more offensive than faggot or queer. If the word is labelled offensive then people who feel it refers to them will be offended as will people who feel strongly that society should not seek to offend certain people races or groups by using offensive words.
But who decides what is offensive and what is not?
The BBC? Society? You?
I hope this debate continues...
Yours truly,
A dirty kuffar
(N.B. The use of dirty kuffar to describe myself was an ironic reference)
Didn't say I agreed with the ironic use of the word, I was merely pointing out their reasoning. It was initially meant to reduce the power of the word by it's constant repetition, try it with any word and it starts to become meaningless, but it seems it has merely allow people to be more accepting of the word and to use it.
Who decides? Well usually the people to whom it is directed (?)
However context, meaning, and intent are also factors to whether a word or phrase will cause offence. There is no contradiction here because it is to do with the whole communication package, which includes tone, body language, familiarity, context and a whole host of other communication factors.

I reckon it was a campaign to help get the song to number 1. It would get the Pogues royalties, but I'm not necessarily suggesting that Moyles or whoever would benefit financially from that wink
I don't find this offensive. But if this was a white man doing this I think I would be very uncomfortable. I think context and who is saying the words is very important as to weather a word is offensive.

Should just the colour of ones skin determine whether this is offensive or not? I am sorry but I think it does not matter one hoot, if it is said from a white man to a black man, or the other way around!!
But we now live in a country where the race card is used on a daily basis, and I think the rules should be applied to everyone, and forget about the colour of the skin! I work with an Asian and he does not give a toss about the word, and nor does any of his family. The only people who seem to bother are the Liberal Guardian reader types, who have nothing to do on a Monday morning. rolleyes

it is the context of a word that is offensive not the word itself.

Context is the main factor in the use of any slang (although personally I wouldn't use some words in any situation). I'm gay and have no problem in someone calling me a faggot in the right context (usually mates). A slang term can be used as a term of endearment or amusement, or to hurt someone.
The BBC is well known for its knee-jerk reactions on things like this. They're clearly still on the early part of the journey for diversity awareness in some parts of the organisation.

In that case I best go out buy a copy of the guardian and join the liberal party. I do find the word .. offensive. And yes I think the word Faggot is not a nice term to use towards a gay person..and is generally used as an insult. therefore I find the word offensive.

Most of the times I have heard the word it has been used in a derogative term in so called jokes, mostly fairly sick, and being shouted by white chav boys. I don't belive I have ever heard that word used in a positive or even a neutral way, when aimed at one person to another.
Yes I find it offensive.
If that makes me a so-called bleeding heart liberal, lefty, Guardian reader or whatever else then hey, I'm fine with that!!

when i hear the word faggot ,i think off a meat ball in gravey with mash spuds and green peas

Me too yum yum. Mr Lyns made it for tea on wed night!
They seemed to forget about the previous line of the song where he sings:
'you're an old slut on junk, lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed' !
If faggot is offensive, why is that not? If i had children, I'd rather they went around singing maggot and cheap lousy faggot rather than slut!
However, for me, I don't find it offensive at all, I have always absolutely loved this song.
I find that radio 1 have far too many blatant references to sex from the presenters, never mind song lyrics.
In fact, recently they had a presenter poll on: 'which of the male presenters would you have gay sex with'
I find this more wrong than the use of one word.
I'm not saying I find the above poll offensive, I found it quite funny, but I wouldn't have found it funny trying to explain the poll to young children (be it gay sex/straight sex/ any kind of sex)
I think this reeks of double standards!
Anyway, my favourite Christmas song of all!

It's Jay's also wink .
You are absolutely right Maz, anything and everything seems to be linked to something or other these days. If you start picking at this bit and that bit, which bit do you leave alone?
I've always taken this song as it is, a simple christmas song that's been around for years.... I just wish it would be left alone. People are stripping the song of a few words when there is sex, tits and balls (lovely Beckham ones in underwear  ) splattered all over our TV screens.
On another note, this thread seems to be another that's been turned on it's arse and has ended up with racial content?? why? dunno sad
All I can say is that if a member used THAT word about another member within this Forum... well Mal or the other Moderators would be 'having a word' with the member(s).
Life is like the question rasied within the Film:
Pulp Fiction: Dog is better than a Pig? Because even that a Dog like a Pig will eat it's own shite the Dog has a personality thus making it better.
If you listen to the lyrics of the song 'Fastlove' by George Micheal. That contains a swear word YET it still get's played on the Radio even in Supermarkets.
Yet if a Rapper like Kanye West uses the same word then it's blanked out?
So just becuase its a Christmas Song the word is still wrong. Just because people like the song (I've always senn it as being rubbish) therefore THAT word is allowed?
Load of rubbish... its no case of special treatment. The word is wrong beacuse if it wasn't then WE would of:
a). Been allowed to say it at School.
b). The Queen would use it during her Christmas Address.
Bye Bye.

Er.....
Thanks..
I think dunno
I don't like faggots they taste horrible...... rolleyes
The thing is, is that the song is not about gays, its about 2 people, a man and a woman, slagging (am I allowed to use that word or will it offend someone dunno
Just like calling a dog Blackie is not racist in any way as its naming a dog because of its colour.
If people were to be offended at the use of words in ANY context, then I would have to change my surname, and so would anyone else who is called Black, Brown, White, Gaylord, Packey and so on
Mr Brains would have to call his faggots something else, blackcurrants and blackberries should be renamed, the flower 'nosegay' would be banned, and sugar puffs would have to have its name altered too, and our dear monarch (gawd bless her) would have to be callewd something other than Queen Elizabeth.
When all said and done, its a christmas song and the word should be taken IN CONTEXT....its not an anti gay song, as baa baa black sheep isnt a racist song........the PC brigade have taken it upon them selves to insist that any use of the word in any form is an insult, thus putting their own set of rules on the English language.
Fair enough had Fairytale (can we say 'fairy' tale or is that offensive too) of New York been about a woman and a gay man , then THAT could have been construed as insulting, but it wasnt. (at least I dont think that Shaun McGowan was playing a gay man in the video :dunno: lol )

A  from me too Mrs Bonedigger biggrin
communication is obviously more about context than the words all have friends who can say things to us that would get anyone else a slap, or would end the friendship.
this song is about people breaking up and the trauma of it happening at xmas the, words are typical of the things said in temper, its not meant to be a happy xmas song.
if this was done in a book, play, film,we would in all likelyhood not be talking about it here, but because it was done in a format that still has some censorship its become a talking point that will not do a great song any harm ,and maybe make folks actually listen to the lyrics
Got to be aware of saying stuff like
'I need a Fag' in America as it could be misunderstood. lol
Rob
btw, A lot of people say they are fed up to the back teeth of the PC correct Nanny state rollercoaster that is Britain today but is there any real way at all of stopping it confused:
Mountain out of a molehill, red faces for the pc brigade at the BBC, our licence fee money going down the drain again.
I was reading somewhere the other day about the word "gay". I cannot remember where I had read it or what the exact circumstances of the article were but I think it was work related and it was about a disciplinary hearing. I just remember the outcome. Someone had called another person gay and they had taken offence to this as they were homosexual. The person who made the remark was asked to explain etc. They admitted to using the word gay however not as in homosexual or happy but as in useless i.e. the person was useless at their job. Case was dismissed.
Just shows how common useage of words change all the time
I must say that I am not personally offended by the word 'faggot', but what does annoy me is that the same old crap records are repeated year after year, after year , after.........you get my drift.
If only I could write one half-decent Xmas record then I could retire for the next 20 years or so, assuming of course that I live that long confused
So come you you DJs of the world...........
dump all your Slade, Wizard, Pogues (with Kirsty McColl) and George Michael records...........surely someone, somewhere must have written a Xmas record THIS YEAR !!
If not, give me a shout and I'll see what I can do wink
