The first time I heard the word was when I came down to Brighton aged 16. It was one of the guys on the building site where I worked telling me he was one.
Its like many other words, can be an insult depending who says it.
It is about time people stopped being offended by words.
I don't find this offensive. But if this was a white man doing this I think I would be very uncomfortable. I think context and who is saying the words is very important as to weather a word is offensive.
Yes I find it offensive.
If that makes me a so-called bleeding heart liberal, lefty, Guardian reader or whatever else then hey, I'm fine with that!!
Nola x
They seemed to forget about the previous line of the song where he sings:
'you're an old slut on junk, lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed' !
If faggot is offensive, why is that not? If i had children, I'd rather they went around singing maggot and cheap lousy faggot rather than slut!
However, for me, I don't find it offensive at all, I have always absolutely loved this song.
I find that radio 1 have far too many blatant references to sex from the presenters, never mind song lyrics.
In fact, recently they had a presenter poll on: 'which of the male presenters would you have gay sex with'
I find this more wrong than the use of one word.
I'm not saying I find the above poll offensive, I found it quite funny, but I wouldn't have found it funny trying to explain the poll to young children (be it gay sex/straight sex/ any kind of sex)
I think this reeks of double standards!
Anyway, my favourite Christmas song of all!

All I can say is that if a member used THAT word about another member within this Forum... well Mal or the other Moderators would be 'having a word' with the member(s).
Life is like the question rasied within the Film:
Pulp Fiction: Dog is better than a Pig? Because even that a Dog like a Pig will eat it's own shite the Dog has a personality thus making it better.
If you listen to the lyrics of the song 'Fastlove' by George Micheal. That contains a swear word YET it still get's played on the Radio even in Supermarkets.
Yet if a Rapper like Kanye West uses the same word then it's blanked out?
So just becuase its a Christmas Song the word is still wrong. Just because people like the song (I've always senn it as being rubbish) therefore THAT word is allowed?
Load of rubbish... its no case of special treatment. The word is wrong beacuse if it wasn't then WE would of:
a). Been allowed to say it at School.
b). The Queen would use it during her Christmas Address.
Bye Bye.
communication is obviously more about context than the words all have friends who can say things to us that would get anyone else a slap, or would end the friendship.
this song is about people breaking up and the trauma of it happening at xmas the, words are typical of the things said in temper, its not meant to be a happy xmas song.
if this was done in a book, play, film,we would in all likelyhood not be talking about it here, but because it was done in a format that still has some censorship its become a talking point that will not do a great song any harm ,and maybe make folks actually listen to the lyrics
Mountain out of a molehill, red faces for the pc brigade at the BBC, our licence fee money going down the drain again.
I was reading somewhere the other day about the word "gay". I cannot remember where I had read it or what the exact circumstances of the article were but I think it was work related and it was about a disciplinary hearing. I just remember the outcome. Someone had called another person gay and they had taken offence to this as they were homosexual. The person who made the remark was asked to explain etc. They admitted to using the word gay however not as in homosexual or happy but as in useless i.e. the person was useless at their job. Case was dismissed.
Just shows how common useage of words change all the time
