I think it depends on how you do it. As long as the card and most importantly what you write in it are suitable then it won't freak him out.
... obviously declaring undieing love would be wrong.... telling him he is a great shag would be fine. (obviously you don't need to be quite that crass but you get the idea).
There is no such thing as innapropriate... you just have to think your approach through!!
