Hang on in there. People may be whispering to each other, and if they are you won't see the messages unless someone whispers to you directly.
Just be patient it may take a little time. Say hello and see who responds, somebody will, then if you're lucky you might be able to strike up a conversation. Also try going into the same room on a regular basis until people get used to you, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Choose your room wisely though. You don't want to be in a room with people who don't share your interests.
