I doubt many peole would not have heard this guys voice EVEN if they never caught his radio shows. In line with my new name, i thought, yet again another appropriate post. I send his family a silent prayer...a very gentle, quiet man who will be missed.
Veteran radio broadcaster and music DJ John Peel has died suddenly in Peru from a heart attack. He was 65.
He was on holiday with his wife Sheila in the city of Cuzco.
Peel was one of the greatest influences of British pop music, starting in the Sixties and still playing new and experimental music in recent weeks on his weekday Radio 1 show.
He went on to become a broadcasting legend, famous for championing new bands and music genres long before they crossed over into the mainstream.
In 1998, Peel starting presenting the award-winning Radio 4 programme Home Truths about the ups and downs of family life.
He was awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting in the same year.
Born in 1939 in the Wirral, John Robert Parker Ravenscroft adopted the surname Peel during his pirate radio days.
On finishing his military service in 1962, he went to Texas and began working for WRR radio in Dallas.
For the next three years he moved around America working for various radio stations.
He started his Radio 1 career in 1967 when he returned to London, establishing himself with the show Top Gear.
Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said: "John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death, as are all who work at Radio 1.
"John's influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades and his contribution to modern music and music culture is immeasurable.
"His commitment and passion for new music only grew stronger over the years." BBC director general Mark Thompson said: "We are all very shocked and saddened by the news of John's death.
"He was one of the giants of radio and will be missed, not just by everyone at the BBC, but by millions of listeners of all ages."
Peel also presented a weekly BBC World Service music programme.
Director Nigel Chapman said: "BBC World Service listeners will be shocked and saddened at the news of John Peel's sudden death.
"He was a very popular, pioneering presenter who broadened the horizons of generations of global listeners.
"He was a tireless enthusiast for new music in all its forms and his passion and warmth touched the lives of millions around the world.
"A great advocate of the World Service, he played a key role in our recent 70th anniversary celebrations. His innovative and iconic style will be greatly missed."
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sheila, and four grown-up children.

JGL
lol
Its a crying shame there's been loads of good stuff on the radio today driving back from Halesowen. sad
music mate, i heard this earlier on another thread, and i was bloody gobsmacked.
it's no exaggeration to say that my musical tastes are down to john peel, right from my earliest teenage years, buying peel sessions cos i knew it was a badge of quality. i was stunned to hear he was 65! i know he's been around for an absolute age, but if anyone ever had young ears, he did. and how many bands have gone on to to greater things because he championed them at the start of the careers. and for all that, he always came across as a genuinely nice, humble guy. it's a bloody sad loss!
n x x x x
peel was a ledge and found some great groups
the undertones was one of them,,,a top band
they are going to dedicate glastonbury to him this year..and make a stage for him..they said that after one hour..what says alot
in these days of 1 week wonders in the music industry john peel is one of the very few who survived down to pure talent, honesty, respect and a willingness to give new acts a chance. his like probably wont been seen again in these days of pop idol, xfactor hyped music shows, i for one was brought up listening to his shows in the days when you would buy the record singles and and bands moved up the charts a week at a time his voice will stay with anybody who ever listened to his shows. he will be sadly missed by many
next year maybe as well, cause they done this year a a a
They had Andy Kershaw on the BBC news earlier and he said that John Peel was more important to music than even Lennon and Mcartney and i would have to amount of big bands that were given their chance for stardom because he championed them is even recently he was still in touch with the sort of music that is important now and in the future.
What will the music world do now without him.
I really am totally shocked and quite a bit upset as he was a real favourite and hero of mine while i was growing up.A true gentleman and legend he was,its a real shame
He will be sorely missed. His openess and sometimes frank reviews of the music bizz was spot on, and his talent for spotting up and coming talent can not be beaten. I dread to think who they'll use to replace him.
A sad and very tragic loss, my thoughts go out to his friends and family

sad loss
Terribly sad day   . Just saw it when I logged on. I too grew up with him and he is so young. 30 years married - his family will be devastated. He will not be forgotten for a long long time to come.
OMG!!
That's just terrible. He was so devoted to his wife as well...
What an awful thing to lose him so early.
sad :(
Sad sad sad.
G'night John.
One of the icons of my youth - gone - will be missed, but not forgotten.
Hard to believe isn't it. I agree with all that's been said-and I wholeheartedly concur with the view that he did more for music-especially British music-than Lennon& McCartney. He was educated in Shrewsbury so we've alwys thought of him as one of our own. In latter years, I listened to him more for 'Home Truths' on Radio 4.
Whatever: I will miss him and am sadder tonight than I should have been
God grant him peace.

you may want to send your condolences and thoughts in on the BBC website as well...
Gutted by the news when I heard it the other day.
He was a fine outstanding gentleman who loved what he done and believed in family values. He will be missed by all.
RIP John Peel
