never a lender, nor a borrower be.
so they say.
but this hs nothing to do with either.
those little people behind the skirting boards are surely fictitious, and speaking purely for myself,Im more than likely to be in need of cash than be in the position to have some spare for others... However, there is a period coming this way soon that I believe has a tradition these days bound in Judea-Christian belief... called Lent?
Maybe, and most probably used as cover... a way to smother pre-existing, pre-christian belief systems. But we won't go into all that eh?
What I think we're supposed to do is Give Something Up  for a period of forty days!!! ( II: The Revenge)
I shall give up spending... as I have nowt to spend.. which brings me back full-circle to that 'lender' business... (I still can't bring myself to believe in the 'Borrowers'... nor the christian thing, come to that... but I digress, once again.)
After a little light-hearted waffle... I suspect this has already been posted?
Nevermind.
so, what will you be giving up, if anything at all... and why?
BTW, what day does Shrove Tuesday fall on next week?
... and what does *shrove* mean?
lp
Why it's the past tense of shrive of course... rolleyes

Thank goodness... it's late this year then?
I'd have hated to prepare Pan-Cakes a day early... that would have been simply foolish
lp

When does Lent begin?

According to my priest it is once you recieve your ashes!!
That is if you you are christian or for non christians, who also give up something then it starts on wednesday. But for me i do not think it is a matter of "outwardly" or showing/saying to some one that you are going to give up or stop doing something.
It is a matter of you yourself saying, to yourself right for the period of Lent i will give up or stop doing, such and such a thing.

I remember a colleague of mine mentioning recieving 'ashes' from his priest. Is this a 'physical' ceremony? Literally taking some ashes from your priest?
I find the ceremony of religion quite fascinating at times.
Please don't feel required to answer, as I know manymight feel thier religious practices to be very personal and private.

We are having pancakes on Tuesday.

In the Ash Wednesday church service the people in the congregation go up to receive a mark in ashes from the priest on their forehead, a mark in the shape of a cross. Not all churches do it.

I am giving up work.
I've given up religious allegories for lent.
I dont do this kinda thing.
It has always fascinated that these gods are obsessed with controlling what how and when the believers eat.

Just thought I'd add this - from
Shrive Shrive, v. t. Shrove; p. p. Shrivenor Shrived; p. pr. & vb. n. Shriving.]
van to shrive, to impose penance or punishment; akin to OFries. skrva to impose punishment; cf. OS. biskrban to be troubled. Cf. Shrift, Shrovetide.]

So it is all to do with being shriven, cleansed etc.

Looks like it. Maybe we need to work out a BDSM thing with pancake batter and a hand whisk.
