I'm very pro teachers. though i'm not against saying that they should I think, work an 8/9-5 5 day week for example with a six weeks holidays like other professions. But thats an old arguement, and if I were a teacher I would do my utmost to protect the hours i work.

I'm sure we'd be only too glad to work 9-5, Monday to Friday. That'd be part-time for most teachers!

teach it more in school i say..........

Yes, you can reinforce manners at school
thats exactly my point.............there are no buts about it.
I know of many private/ grammar schools who have systems in place to ensure youngsters learn manners and respect and have done so for years.
unfortunately these schools go un-noticed because the poorer schools are in the spotlight.
i think that some of the heads of local " more mainstream education authorities / schools" should spend some time learning from the better performing schools and follow their lead.
However the cynic in me doubts that beaurocracy and red tape, together with the huge divide between the good and the bad could even take the time to understand that this is A way forward.

I do not work 9-5 either, but then I do not get 13 weeks paid holiday either. Or " baker " days straight after a two week break, which seem to be happening far regular than ever. Or teacher training days as they are now known. In most schools they either have an extra day just before a long break or,after nearly 7 weeks off in the summer have another " training day ". There must now be about 5 of these in a given year.
Not saying that teachers have an easy job at all, but then nor do I. I get just the normal 4 weeks holiday!
It's not an argument I enter into any more except to say, 'why don't you try it?'.
And loosely back on topic, when I meet a class of disaffected Year 11s for the first time and they ask me what we're going to do today Miss, I always say, "manners and deportment" and enjoy the reaction!

Im not sure if it's the same for teachers as it is for teacher assistants ( im sure someone will correct me if it's not) but they dont get paid holiday's as such, they are paid for the time they work and maybe four weeks holiday and it is spread out over the year, so that they still get paid through the holiday's.
I know that teacher's really do have a tough job sometimes and to be-grudge them those holiday's confused

I have several friends who are teachers and I don't know any of them that have 13 weeks paid holiday.
They all work long hours (much longer than me) They all do work throughout the school holidays from organising and delivering summer schools to training their colleagues to lesson plans and the other teachery type things they do.
I don't resent a jot of their salary or envy their workload/hours.
Back to manners though. I think as a parent it is my job to instill manners. As my son gets older and older I have less and less contact with him on hourly basis. He has friends and a social life that I am not part of. But as a parent I need to get as involved as I can in the snap shot of time that I am with him I (hopefully) have also provided a good foundation that can be built on in 10 minute chats here and there.
I would no more expect a teacher to have responsibility than I would his friends and peer group. He is my son and my responsibility. If he does anything 'wrong' at any point then that is mine and his responsibility.
in edit. what he does 'right' is also mine and his responsibility too.

That's right, what people forget is yes they still get a monthly wage throughout the term holidays but that is pro rata and tends to be less to reflect the extra time off.

Many teachers would also like a fixed 9 to 5 working week, not only because it would mean they worked fewer hours, but because it may once and for all stop the ill-informed comments from those people who think that because their children are in school for a particular number of hours, those are the hours teachers work. I am not and never have been a teacher, but I do have friends who are and know the hours they put into being good teachers.
That said, teachers are no more perfect than any other group, and some have a particular difficulty in not continuing to behave as if they were dealing with their class when outside of school.
isnt this thread about manners????

whip

It is, but like many threads it has evolved to include responses to responses, which is not always a bad thing IMO.
BTW, waving a whip around uninvited is hardly good manners! lol

ok.......... ill do a hundred lines and a wednesday detention, sir!! lol
lets be serious about it..... the threads gone way off topic. i know i started it by suggesting it was something that teachers should re-inforce. but its just proved my point.........
