Kinda like the "If a tree falls and there is nobody around to hear it......does it still make a sound?"

But - does it ???
Ahhh this is the thing....who knows......are we really here or just characters in a story book that a grandfather is reading his grandaughter at bedtime?
If I was writing the book however it would definitely have less clothes in it..!!

The Matrix, is an artificial computer generated world. It looks, feels and seems completely real. Its based on Late 20th - Early 21st Century Earth. But the reality is that Earth was taken over by machines that were created by Humans, and that the real time is about 200 years later. The robots became self aware, and attacked us. We retaliated and ended up getting wiped out. The remaining humans and all humans since were put in machines that served a dual purpose.....a prison and to use the electrically energy inside us to power them (as a kind of battery......). Some Humans escaped and created a city called Zion (based on a mythical city in ancient times). Neo is the One, a human that can free everyone from the Matrix and put a stop to what the machines are planning.
Agent Smith is a program in the Matrix to stop disorder and people from becoming aware of the Matrix.

If you don't get the first one, the third one will fuck you up!
The attempts to explain in this thread only explain the first one (roughly) - but in the first one you don't know some of the things you later find out and then you realise what you thought you knew wasn't actually right but just another form of control - like the matrix.
Is that clearer now?
The only thing you really need to know is.... it is a ferking brilliant film even if you don't get it.
Oh and the most impoirtant thing to remember.... there is no spoon!
Pretty nifty CGI stuff and great action shots... didn't have a clue and am none the wiser! The bad guys in the end just gave up and ran away - wimps!
Thanks for helping me out folks. Thank goodness I can't watch number two tomorrow and probably won't be home from Manchester in time to watch number three.
lol

That about sums it up for me as well...
Aint got a clue really what they are about but just know they are top notch films..
Donnie Darko is just a simple love story wrapped up in a surreal package.
Basically...... Disfunctional youth (Jake Gyllenhall, main character bloke) with no direction or real ambition and generally feeling lost and displaced in the world has lots of strange visions and conversations with a 6ft freaky looking rabbit, and narrowly misses death when a jet engine falls through the roof of his house and demolishes the bed he's recently got out of, he then meets the love of his life shortly after. anyway, stuff happens until his women is killed in an accident at which point he realises that she sort of died cos she met him and the giant rabbit is giving him the option to put it right. to do this he is taken back to the moment that the jet engine is about to crash through the house and he chooses to stay in bed and sacrifice himself to save his woman, who ironically never knows that he's done it as she's yet to meet him.
So there you go, bit confusing on the outside but a fantastic film (and only in Virgin last week so go buy it if you've not seen it)

eh ?

Stop trying to bend the spoon!!!
There is no spoon, now where have I read that before.
Matrix: Religious analogy certainly. Particularly more so once you've seen no's 2 and 3. Inspired hundreds of adverts to use the same slow-mo effect while the camera was moving around in real-time, aka bullet-time as they coined the phrase.
no.2 overdid the CGI and made it look too unreal in the fight scenes and elsewhere; no.3 was better in this respect and has one-hell-of-an-awesome car chase sequence (but still beaten for intensity and cool-ness by the original French (subtitled) version of Taxi, or Ronin, or maybe Bullett, for me).
If only Keanu and Carrie-Ann Moss could emote better when they speak their lines. Maybe some of it was on purpose. But - ah.. Oh well.
Still a breakthrough film, in effects and technology (not all that much in ideas/storyline, if you really know films/books-they-were-based-on).

Err. What they said.
I've only seen the first, and that was a sufficient number of years ago that I can't remember the details. There is actually a serious scientific theory that the universe we live in is a simulation. I'll listen when they can test it.
As for Donnie Darko: there's a bit of extra material around (on the DVD?) that helps it make more sense. Every now and then the universe gets a little confused and creates a loop in time (that's where the engine came from). Fixing it requires a special person. Donnie is that person (the girlfriend says his name sounds like a super-hero. He is). The film follows the events in the messed-up bit of the loop. By the end, his girlfriend is dead, and he realises that his mother and sister will die too. But by travelling through the portal and sacrificing himself, he can prevent their deaths, fix up the universe, stop The Darkness getting the Christmas number one, and let everyone else live happily ever after.
