So, I was just watching University Challenge, and ...

Anyway, I was watching it and I'm sure Paxman made a really funny mistake. But it was so bad that I kind of can't believe it, & I'm wondering if anyone else saw it too. They played a bit of Jimi Hendrix's 'Voodoo Chile' and the contestant identified it correctly (pronouncing it like 'child', as you do). But Paxman stopped him and said snootily, 'No, actually, it's Voodoo Chilli , which is a different track,' and didn't give him the points.
confused
Is it just me, or is that the kind of really basic mistake that your mum makes, and then everyone teases her about it? And if so, how on earth did it end up being broadcast?
Not that I'm perfect ... I thought 'Poppa Don't Preach' was about poppadums for a long, long time redface
Electro
Perhaps the producer had had enough of Paxmans smugness and decided to teach him a lesson? dunno
Certainly is an embarrassing error - didn't see it but surprised the contestants didn't have a little pop!
the song is titled "voodo child" (slight return) released in 1968 from electric ladyland album
and one of the lyrics says voodo chile can be confusing , but paxman is such a twat he probably cant name more than 2 of jimmis songs .
Well technically there are two songs that could be being referred to:
Voodoo Chile or Voodoo Child (Slight Return), both of them on the Electric Ladyland album.

thats what i started to type but thinking about that twat paxman i got side tracked and i left one out
Yeah, well, I wondered if there really might be two songs, and looking online I see that as you say, there are ... but the song that was played was definitely Voodoo Chile with an e. It had the lyrics about the moon turning red etc.
But regardless of which one it was ... neither is pronounced 'chilli', right?
:giggle:
I'm sorry if this seems ridiculously pedantic. It is only because it was Jeremy P being supercilious and yet so wrong. And he is so scathing when other people have gaps in their cultural literacy. ha!

as i said paxman is a twat !!
Has there ever been a misheard lyrics confessions thread? I searched but didn't see one ...
Back in the 90s, my friend's mum thought 'Insane in the Brain' by Cypress Hill went like this:
Hold hands, it's the membrane
Hold hands, it's the brain!
She used to sing along whenever it came on the car radio. I have to say it made the song much cheerier.
Paxman deserves such a slap for that.

Like me hes is old enough to remember it 1st time round.
Words like Heresy, and Spawn of Satan are rolling round in my mind.
Do they still do 'Points of view'? I feel a letter coming on.
