I need educating! Almost anything past a certain point in this country is just `northern` to me. Which regional nicknames are connected to which city? For example, I know a `scouser` comes from Liverpool, but there are others, and I don`t have a bloody clue! This is all very important I realise from my first ever munch, when we were stopped by a party goer who demanded we guess where she came from by her accent. I guessed Liverpool, much to her disgust. I guessed Manchester, much to her disgust, and whilst I desperately tried to guess more and more northern regions in the hope of hitting jackpot, it became more and more evident to me that it`s not so much of a North/South divide, as a North/North divide! Obviously I need to know these things, before I accuse someone else of being something they are not. I am aware of one thing. Never, never, suggest a Liverpudlian comes from Manchester, or visa versa
Now I`m guessing the North/North divide is treated as tongue in cheek as the North/South divide, so this thread is pretty safe?

Theres a definate North North divide - how people think Manchester is in the North of England is beyond me - it's in the bloody Midlands!! (compared to Newcastle)
P.s you forgot Geordies - from Newcastle.
Makems from Sunderland.
Loads more but can't think at the moment!

Andy, how did you work that out?
I couldn't understand a word she said lol

Venus - where did the said lady come from then? - just so we Northerns can have a good laugh!!!

It`s north to me! Anymore South and I`d be in France.......that`s if you don`t count the Isle of Wight, an inhabitant from there once told me a I was a Northerner! :giggle:
I thought a Makem was from Manchester
Scandal, I can`t remember what you were lol

Here's a top tip for you.
NEVER suggest that I come from Wales or Birmingham mad :x
They are the two that I commonly get asked - I hate it.

Why? Anyway, I KNOW where you come from. You still talk funny like the rest of them though :P

Venus, I sympathise. Liverpool and Manchester I can just about tell apart. Try rural Yorkshire and rural Lancashire - I still get those wrong sometimes. I once suggested that a guy who was in fact from Newcastle came from Sunderland. He flew into an apoplectic fit and started ranting in some language that was completely incomprehensible dunno . I had to buy him a pint (my answer to any crisis!)
Will
PS If south of you leads to the Isle of Wight and France then I am only slightly to the north of you! wink

Neil`s a Tyke! rotflmao
tyke
n 1: a crude uncouth ill-bred person lacking culture or refinement 2: a young person of either sex; "she writes books for children"; "they're just kids"; "`tiddler' is a British term for youngsters"

I bloody knew it! :giggle:
Neil! Expand on that whole `tiddler` thing will you?

York is also classed as a Tyke. But usually we just like being called Yorkies. yummy.
Another big divide is the the pennines. Red and white roses. Red is the lancs and White is the Yorkshire. Just remember that York is Yorkshire and you will be fine. I've been asked where York is so many times I just end up crying for their stupidity.

Never a good move - a real big no no !!!
However your recovery tactic was spot on!!! lol
LOL I remember someone (mention no names but she thinks far too much, confuses everyone and is the person who starrted this thread!) walking into a pub last weekend and saying to me ...... OMG I've forgotten how northern you sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahem !!!!!
Cx
You are all Northeners!!!! Check our location!!!!!!!!!
PS 25 degrees in the real South lol
PMSL it's also funny how so many of the north East accents are different, I live in a place where half the population class themselves as geordies and the other half as mackems and there is a difference in the dialect.
I'm a geordie born and bred but to be honest never lived actually in Newcastle.
Then there's the people from other places such as Hartlepool who affectionately are called Monkey Hangers.
I'll try and think of a few more while I'm out having lunch at the pub with my yorkie mate and her scottish boyfriend. Now Scotland is another place where the regional dialects differ greatly too.
Oh and BTW Scandal I love your accent ;)

Don't forget us Teessiders, we are also unique. Pisses me off no end, I go South and they call me Geordie, I go North and they call me a Yorkshire tyke ARGH!!!
Venus talked non-stop all the way there and back from the south coast up to Lancashire for blue and satin's party, bless her!
I understood every word she said (well the ones I heard at least).
She's small but effective!
wink

Its fairly easy if youre in London . Anyone from north of Watford you encounter is known by an all purpose name which is " mini cab".
Geordie's = People from Newcastle (North East)
Mackems = People from Sunderland (North East)
Teessiders = People from Middlesbrough, Stockton, Billingham, Norton (North East)
For the record, I am a Teessider.
but there is nothing wrong with a manc coming IN a scouser
What about Tatters and yam yams?
