Hi Cheekychimp wave
perhaps the folowing quotation may help to understand managers and Management
"....Managers facilitate journeys; they do not identify destinations. They are concerned woth process not with vison..."
The need to delegate is often because they just do not understand the 'vision' or 'dream...dlegation is hust a part of the process.
Hope it helps

.......and of course visionaries don't have to be able to spell well either.....sorry for the spelling mistakes...late at night, long day

Probably as most things in life it is not a black or white issue.
I have just back from a lecture in London where there guy there claimed that project mangement comprises of....
40 % Art.....People skills, commumications and social stuff.
40% .....Science, statistics, performance, charts, procedures and technical crap
20% Leadership.....think its self explanitory
Thinking of it like that I guess its a blend, what this guy was saying was that most mangers get the science and some of the leadership bits ok, but are crap at the art bit.
Ok so he is talking about a project manger but I think that probably still holds true for any mangement job, if you suceed at it you are probablly already doing those 3 things.
What you think?

Hmm not sure on that last comment....... If you are manging you need a team behind you to man the boat. How can you be manging well if people are thinking of jumping out of the boat.

Cheeky in my earlier stuff, I forgot to mention if he is getting on your case / bullying / intimidating then you need to record it and try to state in a mater of fact maner that it is not acceptable or conjucive to good team working.
Hope it gets better for you anyway.

I agree, a middle manager which it sounds like this guy is, should have a good idea what his team members are thinking and try to ensure that they are content in their work
Now you are confusing 'managing' with leadership skills - or theory X theory Y.

Think the lecturer got it wrong about 40% management being art, I would suggest far less than that if any at all...that is not to demean management, an essential and vital part of the deleivery process....left to their own devices most visionaries would not be able to deliver the 'product' whatever it may be.
Some years ago I developed a 'career' triangle...an equilateral triangle with at the three corners 'Vison'; Knowledge' and 'Experience'. Join these to a centre of gravity and you will find that that CofG is flexible, mobile and will tend towards one of these cadinal points.
Connecting 'Vision' and 'Knowledge' is probably the realm of the 'educator' their experience often being case study led, or third party research.
Connecting 'Knowledge' and 'Experience', probably the realm of the Manager, doesn't need to know the vison or dream of the product, just how to get theirexpediently and economically.
Connecting 'Experience' and 'Vision' probably the realm of the artist, the visionary, doesn't need in depth knowledge, that can be bought in...(often eccentrics, divas)
But of course all three points always being connected, just that one point will always be of far less significance in the weighted need.
Take heart Cheeky Monkey, perhaps your the visionary or artist (often a loner or 'plant'), or perhaps the educator (good arguers, but often intransigent)......
....being a Manager is of no value and certainly not a lot of fun if you do not tend towards it
