Phone Calls - dont you just hate it ....

OMG, what have I done? I have just had a phone call, the one we all hate.....
Him "Excuse me madam, but can I speak to the head of the household?" (sexist git)
Me "You are speaking to the head of the household"
Him " Madam, I am please to tell you that this is not a sales call but are you aware that your area has been chosen by our company to receive a discount on new doors and windows?"
Me " Thought you said it wasnt a sales call"
Him "Its not a sales call, but it is to inform you that if you did wish to purchase doors or windows, we would be offering a discount against our normal prices"
Me " Did you realise this was a council estate where half of the residents are squatters and are on hard drugs, and the other half have just come out of prison for murder or similar offenses?"
Him - nothing, the phone went dead
Well at least it got rid of him but dont you just hate the bloody sales calls? They always manage to phone at the wrong time, tell you one thing and then try to rope you into buying something you really dont want evil

once registered you should not receive many calls, anyone that does call, get their name and company and report them to tps as they may get prosecuted if they persist. i've not received any calls since signing up

It definitely works, we use TPS at home, and haven't had sales calls for weeks now.

Thanks for posting that. I'd forgotten about them.
We had previously registered but recently changed our home telephone number and last night we received the first of no doubt many more to come phone calls, offering us a new kitchen rolleyes

We are ex-directory, and have our number with held, but it seems our number can be accessed by so called random dialing devices confused

I'm just off to register our new phone number, so hopefully we won't get bothered again smile

I can also vouch for this but as meaty said, it can take up to a month to work fully!
You can also register deaths to save the hurt of people ringing up and asking for the deceased person.

(Definatly does not work in an industry even remotly connected to such devices... no not at all) innocent

Everyone hates the autodiallers, and the menus you have to fight through.. Spare a thought for the poor git on the end of the phone. Horrible job in places with autodiallers.
BTW the is also the MPS, and others which cut down on junk. I know the companies check these lists before planning mailings so they are worthwhile. Also make sure you always tick the 'Do not pass on my details' box whenever you fill out a form. Otherwise your details (including your x directory phone number) can be sold to an agency.
Finally BT offer a service that blocks inbound calls who have blocked their caller ID. This prevents nearly all prank and sales calls. Bliss...

person ive called: Millwoodbrown? who are they?
me: an independent market research organisation
person ive called:what are you selling?
me:its not a sales call its just your views im intersted in
Person ive called:whats this about:
me:were doing a market research survey about banks and banking products
person ive called:i m not giving you any bank details!
me:we dont need your bank details its just your impressions of banks and building societys were intersted in
person ive called:how long does it take?
me:it can take upto 20 mins or less depending on your answers
person ive called:no thanks thats a bit long at this time of night......how did you get my number im ex directory
me:we call people at random so we get a cross section of the population and are therfore exempt from being blocked from calling.(although not being in the phone book dosnt stop 11 random numbers being dialled automaticaly by the server)

I hace already registered but it don't stop the call from India. Yes india they have massive call center's out there. I keep getting calls trying to sell me if I am going to buy insurance from India mad

A lot of call centers are now moving back to the u.k. becasuse the language barrier and the cockups mad by foreign call centers because the dont understand us properly.

I used to be insured by Norwich Union and when it came to get re-insured I called the number and was connected to India. I was getting nowhere as we could not understand each other so......... I hung up and called again.....
Guess what?...... India again, I spent nearly an hour sorting a quote out and then the line was disconnected. :x
I now ONLY use companies that have a local office I can visit if I need to give them grief. Just imagine the cost of travelling to Bombay to get a cover note confused

OOOO might just have to sign up - had a phone cal this morning, some yank offering to tell me how good their telecom company is - I said "Not interested", but They carried on, so I hung up. Worse thing was it was 10am on a Saturday, I was out last night and I had one hell of a hangover. Do these people not understand that some people might just need a lie in!!!!!!! lol

You could of course try this

BT will register you with TPS, and give you caller display for free.

TPS are actually automatically blocked by autonumber generators. Advertising companies can not legally use the numbers and so must dial them manually or by bypassing the blocks (which in turn would lead to a hefty fine and most probably bankrupt the company).
All telemarketing companies must offer an 'opt out' service. If they do not then they are not 'opt in' companies. These are the ones who would use the automatic dialling machines and by pass the blocks. It is upto you if you want to do business with them, I know I wouldn't.

This tps is a very good thing to invest in however it dose not stop market research calls as its looked on that every individual has the right to give their views and opinions on the subject matter the interviewer is discussing.
Its amazing the amount of ppl i call that say im on the tps how are you able to call me?
So yes the tps is good and will block most unwanted calls but market research is exempt.

The scam calls are a bit of a pain too. Not that you fall for the scam, just that the phone rings as you're dropping off to sleep nor some other inopportune moment. The TPS is powerless over these too as they originate overseas.

Thats why I told them we were the biggest, roughest council estate in wigan!
Anyway, going to register with the fol suggested on the first page and see if that works. I alway presumed that because we were ex-directory that we wouldnt get these type of calls and blamed Mr NWC for filling in our phone number of one of these marketing questionnaires that come through the door! Seems like he was right when he said he hadnt put our number on it redface

I've had calls trying to:-
"Give" me:- Mobile Phones - Happy with one I've got & Network, (Doubt it would be free for long!)
Books - Still got to pay P&P (so surely not free?),
Sell me:- Double glazing - Always love these :shock: :twisted: If I'm not in a rush, I always let them go through the whole speil and occassionaly ask questions to pretend to be interested! When they ask"What would you like done?" I always say "Actually can I have everything done but you would have to send the bill to the Council!" Always seem to shock them! :twisted:
Conservatories - Usually do the same as Double Glazing but finish off "Can you build them with stilts?", Reply comes - "Erm why Sir?", "Well I do live in a flat on the first floor!"
For any other calls that I don't just Cut them off I tell them that "I'm not interested because I DO NOT buy anything from Cold Callers."

I just have a little speech that says, "Can I stop you for a second, we have a policy to never, ever, buy anything from a telesales call".
They just say thanks and hang up once they know they're rumbled.
