I have broadband at home.
I would like to have internet on the move and so want to buy one of those dongley thingies... How do they work and what do I do with it? Can you just buy any type or does it have to be the same as your 'home' broadband?
Any recommendations?

When you say on the move, do you mean using the broadband at home, if so, then it needs to be wireless, and you would need something like .
It plugs into a USB port on your laptop, and will enable you to receive bradband signal from your wireless router.
If you want a truly on the move solution (e.g. away from the home) then you will need a modem dongle from a mobile phone supplier, it plugs in the same way , using the USB slot on your laptop, and uses a sim card supplied by your chosen supplier.
I use an Orange Dongle... great coverage wherever I want to go as I have an Orange Phone so that I know that.
I have virgin broadband at home so know that you can have separate 'stuff'
Cheers - I did mean on the move.
Just been looking at the mobile shops... I just want a PAYG one though rather than a monthly contract as it won't be something that I use loads.
we have the 3 which we use for when we away in caravan in blackpool was great in north yorkshire was great at home cant connect a lass 6 doors along great for her we just bought a o2 for when we away coverage is great and can top up[ weekly or monthly great for a payg
I have a vodafone one I steal from work... I have no idea how much it costs cause I blame my boss for the useage! :giggle:
I'm no help whatsoever but I do know that if you look at the vodafone website (and I'm sure the others do the same) you can check where there is coverage and where there isn't. Might be worth doing some research in that respect so that it's actually of some use to you in the places you plan to visit.
I'm going to have a bit of a radical one this weekend and actually leave my laptop at home!
3 allow you to use if you need to keep in touch with others. All the Dongle providers don't or charge a lot extra.
Have a - there are various threads discussing best mobile internet and info on when special offers come up.
I have Vodafone - works fine for me and was very cheap as it was a deal with cashback and free dongle etc. Vodafone also do a pay monthly deal. Most of the PAYG ones are very expensive - might be better off just getting internet on your phone if you use it rarely?
i have vodafone, £15 a month, and its shite,,,,, so regret getting it . bloody stuck wi it now for 18 months grrrrrrr
I have a Vodafone one at £15 a month. It works really good in birminham and swindon, these are all 3g (proper broadband) areas. It is not so good in out of the way places like on the coast in cornwall where it is only 2g (the old modem speed) but it does for picking up e-mail etc, not so good for getting on the chatroom but I still get multi rooms.

Phil
Hola Nola..
everything you need to know in understandable form here:
Hi Nola
You can buy a dongle from 3, which is pay as you go. The dongle costs about £30, you then buy top ups as and when you need it.
I know this isn't what you're after but you might be interested to know that 3 also provide a special wireless router that allows you to put your dongle into. This then allows you to have a wireless network in your home, with a single dongle.
You might want to look here for more info:
If you check with your home BB provider they may have an add-on. If you're close to renewal they may offer it to to you for free (ditto if you are close to renewal on your mobile contract - they may be able to give you a deal on the internet package or dongle as part of your upgrade)
