It must be love- Madness, one ove my fave ever songs.
Can't believe no one has mentioned the recent massacre of Aerosmith/Run DMC's "Walk this Way"

You say the nicest (least believable) things! :giggle:
I agree with Big Paul to the extent that there have been some truly, truly awful cover versions done by bands/singers that should have been punished for their crimes - who can forget Rolf Harris doing "Stairway to Heaven"??!! I think if a new band does an old song in a new and innovative way, then good luck to them. But if they butcher a classic by trying to do it in the same way as the original, then they should be publicly beheaded on a new show to be called "Lop off the Tops". rotflmao
Can I just add the murdered version of the Sparks' classic 'This Town Ain't Big Enough' by that prat Justin Hawkins?
Nuff said confused

I've got the video. Absolutely brilliant, though I'm surprised that Plant and Page didn't kill themselves just so they could turn in their graves. Or maybe they never heard the pirates/sea shanty version.
Sometimes covers are done well and creatively, finding something new in the song. Sometimes they're better than the original. Sometimes they become the definitive version. Sometimes they're so bizarre you can't help but love them.
Sometimes they're cheap commercial crap done by people with no talent.
Listing sounds good. If you want to perform a cover of a listed song, you must first get permission from the appropriate planning authority, demonstrating that you have the ability to treat it in a way that it deserves.
(This is sounding very familiar - haven't we done this before?)
As Keano said it is all a matter of perspective. I first started listening to music in the mid 60s and a lot stuff that I heard for the first time was white covers of black American R&B records...but it took me a long time to realise this.
Some covers are naff but others add something to the original...a few Byrds reworkings of Bob Dylan songs spring to mind. Manfredd Mann's version of Blinded by the Light is another.
One I absolutely hated mad was Rod Stewart's version of Have I told you Lately...I thought he murdered one of my favourite songs! His version of Downtown Train, however, was very good..although I still prefer the original by Ton Waits.
Personally, I can't see the point in bands doing a carbon copy of the original, other than making a quick buck, as I can't see that they would get any artistic satisfaction from that.
Another fab cover is Marilyn Manson's version of Tainted Love by Soft Cell. Wonder what GP will think to this though??

Personal Jesus .. Marilyn's cover of the DM classic wasn't half bad either! Although his "Suicide is Painless" sucked!

Anyone who attempts to play any Queen song should have their finger nails removed without anaesthetic, burn their entire back catalogue and wipe them from music history. Utter Pap!!!

I've corrected your typo wink

This is exactly the one that sprang to mind reading this thread! horrendous! mad :x
The Queen 'we will rock you' cover, was it five? or some other non-descript boy band? Should never be done!
Agree with madonnas cover of american pie- no no NO!
But there is a cover of her 'just like a prayer' and that too is dire!
I have to say any cover by rod stewart I loooooove seeing as I love the Bod, and i like all the covers of the song handbags and gladrags especially the stereophonics version.
I suppose it does depend on your generation, when i first started buying music, i was in the 'boyzone' generation, then i started to realise i prefered the originals- tracy chapman, beegees, cat stevens etc!
v sad!

:laughabove: have to agree on you on every cover is bad of course....but some songs, tunes, passages of music should be preserved as their anthems to a lot of to dilute them with bad arrangements, singing or to use them in an advert (I know some people will say it gives them a new lease of life viz:I heard it through the the use of that song in the levis advert was done brilliantly).I seem to recall that just after Johnny Cash died they wanted to use his tune 'ring of fire'in a ad for piles cream !they were refused!
One of the few times I've heard a great song covered by more than one band and made to sound better is The Stones 'Wild Horses'. Dave Matthews band did an excellent cover and so did Mazzy Star.
Nothing to do with me not liking the Stones of course rolleyes

Also a complete contrast in style can really make a well known song amazing to hear by a different artist: a perfect example George Michael's version of Roxanne (just when you expect a Sting screech you get.....mellow tones)

I love both versions of that.
I love George and Sting though
I also submit that Metallica's cover of Thin Lizzy's Whiskey in the Jar is very good biggrin
If Motorhead was written by Mr Kilminster when in Hawkwind, is Motorhead's version of Motorhead a cover...?
then Hawkwind have recovered it... or were they simply errm.. oh never mind
Primal Scream's version of Motorhead is jolly good too... just for the record... a cover-record, that is.
