I've just heard an old old favourite song of mine(on the radio) very badly covered.... probably by some x-factor wannabe.I'd love to see some preservation order on some classic old standards so they are preserved and not badly ripped off.... case in point is Madonna's murderous rendition of American goes for theme tunes as well!I used to love the Thunderbirds theme and starsy and Hutch....granted it all went down hill a bit once the theme tune had finished but the filmed versions should have kept to the one else feel they've had a favourite tune badly covered and ruined.

Yeh...
Some numpty boy band covered a Queen classic not so long ago......
It was dire sad
Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty.. was Demonised in the early nineties by some techno Twats! and as I recall the Fuppin FOO Fighters
However you must hear Amy Winehouse's cover of 'Valerie' by the Zutons

Billiant record that should be a grade II listed preservation order to keep the untalented from pinching it,mixing it and it appearing in some "drum n' bass" effort.I also don't like great tunes being used in adverts.....War - low rider for the marmite ads (sickening) evil

Anyone who attempts to cover a Queen song should have their finger nails removed without anaesthetic then fed to 12,000 diehard music fans mad
First in line is that freakshow called Electric 6 evil
Genius idea BigPaul
I would also add a clause that butchering a song under the guise of "but it's for charity" is also unacceptable.
I'm all for raising money for good causes, but can't they do it with talented artists and good songs rather than wanabees destroying classics
On the other hand some covers have been quite good....
I like The Doors Light My Fire and I also like Will Youngs version...
It is only my opinion though lol
I wouldnt exactly call it a classic, though I liked it a lot, and it still gets a blast on the pod o'noise...and thats Numans *cars*...
a few years ago, the tune was ripped by a girl-band, forgotten the name, so that they could gyrate and waffel girl-band-stoopidness over it... nasty!
and I had the sad experience of seeing them interviewed on some kiddy-prog...
interviewer asked:
so did you like *cars*, or the Tubeway Army?
Girlband responce was:
dunno :dunno: :dunno:
for there were three of them
I mean.. come on! Have they no idea at all of the material they work with???
arghhhh...
minor rant about covering stuff

agreed... Fiath No More did a brilliant version of Black Sabbath's War Pigs!..Fantastic... almost a tribute really, I'd like to think it was how BS would have done it if they'd had the production levels at the time... (though of course it never hit the charts..hehe) and a brilliant Midnight Cowboy theme too...

I wont give my views on Mr Young though....
steps away from the post

I think this is all a matter of persective. If you dislike the artist or their style you going to hate everything they do cover, version or not. Most bands start with cover versions and if they have any talent they will develope their own stuff.
Many of my favourite songs of my record buying youth were covers and very good covers at that ( at least in my opinion)
Madness - it must be love
Rammones - ever fallen in love.
If we banned cover version what would happen to classical music? We could only listen to the Mozart version???? Oh no he didn't record it.
To quote Paul Simon 'every generation throws a hero up the pop chart' if it ain't your generation you just have to smile indulgently and know the original was better.

This reminded me of a band I've recently discovered called Nouvelle Vague. You'd have heard a couple of their tracks used in adverts ( T Mobile and the orange juice one ) They've done some excellent covers including Ever Fallen In Love, Don't Go and Teenage Kicks.
And I LOVE the Madness cover of It Must Be Love

Sorry to play devil's advocate with all you purists but I have to agree with Keeno, it is a matter of perspective.
Covering other people's music is surely a great compliment, and I often like to hear the different version with an often different interpretation of the lyrics. You purists can stick with your same version but surely can appreciate the different take on it.
What about mash ups? I love hearing some of them, great to hear two songs side by side.
Also a complete contrast in style can really make a well known song amazing to hear by a different artist: a perfect example George Michael's version of Roxanne (just when you expect a Sting screech you get.....mellow tones)

What about the total mash ups you get on 'I'm sorry I haven't a clue'? There they sing the words of one song to the tune of another. Sometimes hysterically funny!

I used to live next door but one to a church very close to the centre of the local town.
I remember one sunny Sunday lunchtime sunbathing in the back garden
There was a rock event organised on the market place and the local church service happening simultaneously.
It was rather bizarre hearing "bring your daughter to the slaughter" being played under a chorus of "bread of heaven"

Now that sounds funny Jags, but expect it upsets the purists....

How's about Floyd's Wish You Were Here done by Gregorian Monks?
Now THAT'S bizarre!
but bloody good :giggle:
I still have a recording of Peter Sellers 'singing' 'Hard Days Night' in the manner of Richard III.
I've got it on my PC and still listen to it when needing a laugh.
Now that's a fabulous cover.
lol
The worst cover I've ever, ever, ever, ever heard was.......
Peter Gaberial's - Don't Give Up as muzak in Homebase. mad :x :x
The original used to bring tears of saddness to my eyes. This just brought tears of anger, frustration grrrrrrrrrrrr :x :x
