ah! but then one is being open to corruption ! i shall turn a " blind eye" while probably being reasonable in the circumstances could lead to sombody else saying somthing like "well he said that an got away with it etc etc etc." but debate is a good thing, laws are amended changed... thats democracy.
Does this thread actually exist in reality ? Or is it merely brought to existence by its inability to simply cease to be ?
It was good to see one newish member post on here and hear what they had to say.
For the most part, I think most 'advice' is given in a genuine spirit of helpfulness. Even if the newbie has done something that isn't strictly against the AUP (so there is no reason for a mod to step in) but is still generally frowned upon or, at least, not in the spirit of the forum, then most of the advice I have seen is something along the lines of "Hi and welcome, but we don't normally do that here. You might want to take some time to read more threads and then come back and try again." That seems to me just a little gentle help rather than anything heavy.
One important point that no-one has made yet is that it can often feel better for the newcomer to have been given friendly advice by another member than to have been 'modded' - however nicely it's done (and all the mods I know are wonderful people - and that's not meant as a grovel).
Most of us would rather be told not to park in a certain spot by a friendly local than by a passing police officer. One feels like friendly advice the other feels like a rap on the knuckles, even if both are done in the same tone of voice and without the threat of further action.

Of course a rap on the knuckles is barely felt at all if you spend most of your day with them scraping along the ground ........................and we dont get many new members like that .............now do we ?
Yeah we get yer point Will of course , but conversely advice from someone with no authority can seem condescending . Its a circular argument which is why up til you came along no one managed to get a serious comment from us on this thread .........damn you and your well turned phrase you evil monster :-)
somebody i knew once came ou with somthing so profound and it has stuck with me, He said " I will listen to anyones point of view so long as they don't get all fanatical about it "
debate is good as long as that does not mean that i MUST agree to whatever it is you may think. ok. the AUP may be the admin rules and not law but we agree to those rules to join the site.
