Ok my son is after a psp for xmas (Hes 9)
So wanting so info on the psp as i dont no noffink about it and i trust you forumy types to know what your talking about.
He already has a nintendo ds lite which he plays with very often
A playstation 1 which has hardly ever been played on (he doesnt sit still very long so hand held is handy for him)
A Wii has been mentioned but think that will end up like the play station 1 and they are still rather high priced rolleyes
So good / bad / easily breakable????
much difference to the ds?
confuddled tan x

I think a Scalextric is in order. Now THATS a proper pressie that is :d
I've never heard of it - I guess I really am old! lol
scalectrix lost lol  thats not cool apparently confused
All i know about it is its a handheld playstation and its got no lid (compared to the ds)
I work in the electrical industry and PSP and DS are very similar, the only difference i think really is the games that are available and also DS are more durable and are less likely to break/damage or go faulty compared to PSP.
The key toy this year again will be the nintendo Wii
and as in the previous 2 years it will be in short supply,so if you are thinking of this as a xmas pressie best to get it soon.
Hope this helps Mr S
Hi tan
My son had a psp the year before all his friends wanted 1. I found it wasily breakable and unreliable compared to that of the ds. Also there does seem to be a lack of choices in games for the psp compared to all the other video games. I stick with the ds and just get loads of games for it lol

if you want to make his day you can buy an nds ram module for a nintendo ds and put 100s of games on the memory.
Easily ask google

We did that for our daughters DS,a friend had this and sorted one out for us cost £30 and the friend put about 30 games on aswell (all the new releases)
Mr S
The PSP is effectively a "dead platform", sony are desperately continuing to flog (in both senses of the word!) a dead horse.
It's more powerful than the DS (played movies too, but as far as I know sony stopped producing movies a while back because they wern't selling) but was aimed at a different target audience (more adult) than the DS.
Sonys last attempt at keeping the final nail from being banged into the PSP coffin is to turn it into a media controller for the PS3.
PSP- Play Station Portable, I believe.

Smart R's! lol
we got child number 3 a psp for his 9th birthday in august (cos we got it 2nd hand at a bargain price!!)
guess what he asked me yesterday....can i take it to game station and trade it in for a ds!!!! mad
Our kids have both the psp and the ds lite, so thought i'd ask them there opinion.
Both prefer the psp but they like both, but the psp does more than play games, plays mp3's, movies, and you can even use it for the internet, our oldest has just informed us it can also be used as a sat nav which is news to us lol

Well my 12 year old son started off with a game boy, then PS2, then PSP and now we have a Wii!!
He never plays the gameboy, often plays his Play tation and his PSP is great for travelling as can play vids as well. As with all of them the games can be pricey.
I have to say that the Wii is fantastic! It is def a game that the whole family can play (I love the Big Brain Acadamy)There are also many other games that all can play. We are all a bit addicted to Guitar Hero at the mo! The Wii also has internet access so you can play others all over the world or just up the street.
There are also "active" games like Wii sports or the Wii fit.
So if I had to only choose 1 - it would be the Wii. But I am not a 9 year old boy!!!!!
Good luck!!

I got a deal when i bought the ds with 50 odd games on a fire card and since bought another 2 fire cards with lots of games on so hes basically got plenty of games
Been impressed with the ds as never had a problem with it and its been dropped, stood on, soaked, chucked down the stairs loon
wii is fantastic and i love mine.
But the wii 2 is going to be out in about 6-8 months.
Thats partly the reason for steering away from the wii etc, i dont want to jump on the bandwagon of having to upgrade every time a new one comes out
it will play todays wii better motion sensors and obviously better quality games.
But samba de amigo is the best!

You didnt, I just know wink
i have a psp and find it is more that a games platform although there are quite a few games for it with more quality titles being released like the force unleased to name just one, rather a small compact pc without the keyboard and mouse.
i use it to watch the umd's (dvd)on the psp and also to surf the net via wireless broadband connect.
i run video's and music from my computer into it and use the messanger service to chat to friends when i can't be bothered to turn on my pc.
with the new packages like camera being able to plug into it turning it into a web cam and the navigation package are definately bringing people to use it more.
also it now has a 3rd eddition/upgrade and does ooften have new software upgrades to bring new features into it and upgrade the graphics capability which can't be said of the ds.
I've got a PSP, i'm not much of a gamer but some of the games are ok....you can pick most games up for £5-10 on ebay and some for less than that. I used to use if as an MP3 player before i got my new phone, it sounds good but it's a pain in th arse as a portable player cos you can't disable the buttons and i use to change track mid play all the time (it's great as a car MP3 though :thumbupsmile.
It's useful as a mobile internet unit as you can find lots of free WiFi spots if yu know where to look, there are a few niggles here, mainly the data input ( no real keyboard) but the more you use it the easier it gets.
Sony shot themselves in the foot by not releasing the software/hardware to make your own UMD discs and you'll need to by a 4gb memory card (about £15 on ebay.... the you can upload your own films (again, available online wink ) just look out for encoded movies, the quality is usually excellent.
It's not the best portable games machine but it is the most versatile, it could have been much, much more if Sony weren't such a bunch of knobheads and restricted the technology licensing.
Probably worth getting something else and looking round for a good series 1 PSP with some choice games as a generally family use travelling entertainment thingy if you go away or travel around a fair bit
PSP is the superior machine to the DS. It is a Playstation 2 but in miniature (PlayStation Portable - PSP). You can buy many new games for it averaging from upwards (most games are cheaper online, markets and carboots littered with 2nd hand games).
The new Lite & Slim version is also wireless internet compatible (as is the DS) but unlike the DS not only can you play against others in certain games, but also surf the web and download free games and extra content for games (requires a memory card - the larger the better) it also acts as a portable movie player and mp3 player.
I have one so if you have any questions just throw me a mail.
Managed to get a second hand great condition one with 4 games for £20 over the weekend its the slim one with the wireless. he has a portable dvd player which he uses a lot so dont think he will be to bothered about using it for the movies but nice to have that option
Thanks for all your help kiss
