i actually sat with a tear in my eye when i read this excellent thread, not because im soft may i add lol but because life is to busy nowadays with ps3s , wiis and the likes and kids sit in their rooms allday on internet not having a fraction of the life we had when were young. ty for the memories xx

I agree  I think technology has taken the fun away from kids (although we can see it but they can't).. marbles, jacks, pippa dolls, and two balls (steady!! lol ), french skips to name but a few - that's outdoor games for you.
You'd then be bathed put to bed and have ankle sock lines where you'd caught the sun!
I remember the endless summer days of my childhood. Did it rain ever rain? My neighbour and I spent all summer playing endless cricket test matches in the back garden. It was always England verses the rest of the world. (It must have been the year when South Africa were banned confused ) It is so hard to be Dennis Lillee with an airflow ball.
How I remember my dad complaining about the brown patches on the lawn where we had trodden the grass into extinction.
Its at this time of year when technology and its impact on todays youth really hits home..
When I was younger during the school holidays I used to wake, dress and exit the house to play in the space of about 20 seconds..
Nowadays my kids wake and turn on the tv and the pc and talk to their mates on messenger and play video games...
Its saddening sometimes.. sad
Conkers.... you forgot conkers!!! Chucking sticks and rocks into the tree and knocking a load down, drilling holes, baking, soaking in various liquids trying to make it hard enough to beat your mates....
ahh... nostalgia.. its not what it used to be....

Well I've just kicked mine off the Wii and out into the sunshine. If other parents have done the same it should be fun out there - but there's a real shortage of parents giving their children that kind of right-to-roam freedom around here.

Hehe... I think that might be all dads. In our case it was where we had taken endless runs up to throw ourselves into the paddling pool (tiny, shallow, freezing!)

I had a purple Chopper

But girls, did you choose purple because it was Donny Osmond's favourite colour - or is that just me?!

Well it was definitely my favourite colour at the time, but that could have been due to other influences innocent redface

They still do that in the park near us - makes a right old mess of the trees and the park though. Must be easier ways to get them.

The area we used to live in, was pretty rough. We worried about letting the kids play out so at first we watched them from behind the net curtains. We'd already made sure they understood road safety and 'stranger danger'. We were lucky; they stayed within the boundaries we set, knowing that we would move the goalposts as and when they earned the right.
We didn't want them to grow into people who were frightened of being outside. There's a point somewhere between 'street wise' and mollycoddled. It's just finding it; giving your kids the responsibility and trusting them a little.
They are now, at 17 and almost 16, independent and outgoing, with manners and respect. A number of people from this site have met our kids and I'm sure they'd agree with me. I'm not saying they don't step out of line or forget themselves sometimes, but on the whole, we think we've not done a bad job.
They do go out and stay withing their set boundries but the main problem is there are so many twats from up the road riding round on stolen/un-insured/un-roadworthy motorbikes that even watching them I wouldnt be quick enough to avert a disaster.

I wasn't criticising, Mallock - we had the same kind of things going on near us. It's bloody awful being a parent sometimes, isn't it?

I didnt for one minute think you were :-)
And yes its horrible sometimes lol
you look back to then and you look at todays culture and they say we live in a civilized society
our parents had worries about us the same as we have worries about our children. In some cases they were even the same worries.
My point is that the world and civilisation evolves. We wouldn't be where we are today if it didn't... and with things we class as advancements we get things we may not like.
Yes, there are a few things I remember fondly from my childhood.... but I wouldn't swap all that 'we' have today for all that I had then. The price of prgress in some areas is perhaps a more difficult option in other areas.
'We' have created our children's world... and we are instrumental in their future.
splendid
