Truly, truly GUTTED
Someone said to me today, that's why we English are so good in bed, 90 minutes on top and we still manage to come second dunno
Bet you we qualify though :bounce:
Dan wink
COME ON ENGLAND
on the other hand 90 mins on top then some french guys shove two up when you least expect it, im going to belgium for my holidays in future
A Rant....
The sports snobs are at it again!
We joke about the Germans...not out of racism , but out of football rivalry,,,We enjoy beating them not because they are Germans, but because ever since our undefeated run came to an end in 1970, they went on to beat us in almost every game. The rivalry is akin to that between Manchester United and Liverpool.
As for the .."oh I didnt know there was a game on" brigade. these are the same people who call football fans ignorant. Of course a vast and untrue generalisation. Only displaying their cultural snobbism and their own ignorance.
Football is the most pure and enjoyable sports one can play or watch. As for whether the players are worth the money. Most of the top clubs who pay those wages and run a well managed business make a profit from it. Winning in the process, entertaining more people than any other spectator event, thus they must be worth it.
I like other sports too, but comparisons are a bit wide of the mark. England won the cricket...against a low ranking test side ridden with injuries...and as for Rugby World Champions...err didnt they lose to France in the four nations...we wont mention New Zealand!! and wasnt it a last minute turn around with which they won the match. It is also commonly accepted that the rugby they played wasnt even up to their own standards.
England played certainly the best team in Europe , if not the world, and matched them for most of the game. Indeed they would have won if not for one or two errors on their own part. Remember, defending is also a skill , which for 90 minutes England showed they could do Let footy fans enjoy their highs and commisserate on their lows.
Now lets get back to talking sex!!

For some reason you seem very keen to pursue this matter. Having asked the question yesterday, you have brought the same thing up again twice today. dunno
My comments about the Germans were no more racist than your signature is racist against the English. I spent many years stationed in Germany whilst in the army and had lots of German girlfriends, as well as German male friends. My first daughter was born, and died in Germany so I have always had a close bond with Germany, and nothing but fond memories of the German people.
My comments about the Bayern Munich fans were based upon the fact that there were a lot of similarities between the way that England lost last night to two goals in injury time, and the way that Man United won the ECL Final with two goals in stoppage time in 1999.
When I wrote that they were German so they deserved it, I was attempting to be funny. I do that every now and then !!! Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Often it depends on the mood of the recipient. Some people enjoy / encourage humour in the Cafe. Others, alas, do not!!! evil
As TDnH pointed out, the rivalry between England and Germany is akin to that of Liverpool and Manchester United or, dare I say it, Scotland and England. How many of our Scottish friends were cheering last night when the second French goal went in? Does that make them all racists?
I would hope that my explanation would suffice to put an end to this public mud-slinging so we can all get back to having fun, the reason most of us are here. I suspect, however, that will not be the case. rolleyes
I'm too bloody scared to post my thoughts on it..... It's all become a little too heated me thinks.... It's only a game guys... (And this is coming from an Aussie who had to bear the digs about the rugby!)
On that note.... bolt

Si,
Totally gutted, but have to agree with tdnh and the sarge - also have to remember the tv news images of Glasgow bars full of Scotsmen wearing Brazil footie shirts in the last world cup - what is their problem? They also have a German manager and failed to qualify (yet again.)
For some reason you seem very keen to pursue this matter. Having asked the question yesterday, you have brought the same thing up again twice today. dunno

Only cos you failed to respond the first time. It was a serious question.

rotflmao :rotflmao: :rotflmao: My signature is so far away from being racist it's funny - it's a line from a children's story book and is being said by a giant who is searching out 'people' to eat and can tell the nationality of them by their smell - nowt but that.

My comments about the Bayern Munich fans were based upon the fact that there were a lot of similarities between the way that England lost last night to two goals in injury time, and the way that Man United won the ECL Final with two goals in stoppage time in 1999.

That is fair enough and I have no problem with it. biggrin :D

And this time it didn't work! My mood had nothing to do with it - if you inserted any other word ie. black, white, jew, homosexual etc etc then it would have looked just as bad and others would have questioned you - no, I would still have questioned you but you get my drift!! lol I have been enjoying and encouraging humour in the Cafe for over a year now so think I know how to do it.

No problem there either. You are probably right! :D

This wasn't intended as any form of public mud slinging at all - it was a serious attempt to comment on something you said and to find out the motivation behind it. Nothing new in the Cafe I think. Fun is fantastic - long may it happen.

A Rant.... and response

An excellent answer making no reference to the war or 1966 - very intelligent too!

No, there really are people who do not have any interest in football at all and do not follow the current sporting events - I know it's hard to believe but it's true. In my part time life I am with people who probably wouldn't recognise a football if you shoved one up their nose - yes, I suppose that IS a vast generalisation but hope you get the drift. They would suggest that the emphasis placed on football in society is out of proportion to its value to society and it's akin to the early days of rudimentary religion. biggrin
In my real life I work with people who eat, live and drink football - getting my Y12 pupils to write about anything else is like drawing teeth!! Oh, and I really didn't watch the match - personal choice but I have to retain a professional interest in the event otherwise I wouldn't be able to have the debates with the pupils the next day.

My only comment is that football has now moved a million miles away from being a pure sport - it's a global business with the players/managers bought and sold as commodities on the open market just like some people buy and sell cattle - only for their physical worth. However - the entertainment value is undeniable! lol

Each to their own I think.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, oh... yes!!
Emotional replay of the match (from a Gallic viewpoint):
smile :) :) (beginning of the game)
  sad (Lampard's goal)
confused :? :sticky: (all out attack, great English defending, no result)
   (Sylvestre's foul on Rooney)
 :P lol (Barthez stops Beckham's penalty)
:eeek: worship biggrin (Zidane's 1st goal)
:thrilled: :thrilled: :thrilled: (Zidane's 2nd goal ! We won !!)
OK, we were lucky as hell - but when you have Zidane, Barthez, Henry, Vieira, Pires and Trezeguet in your team, it's much easier to be lucky
(And come on girls, admit it - ain't Zidane the sexiest baldy male around ? ;) )

That's ALL we need - the French to join in!!! If I were you I'd hide lol
Tall dark....and sarge here here I'm with you all the way. Two very eloquent posts We footy fans "hate" germans, french etc. purely in a footballing sense and I'm sure the feeling is mutual from across the channel and further. It's part of what football is all about. I'd be very happy to shake hands with the french and germans after the game. In fact I did with my french colleague despite the fact he gave me hell on earth throughout Monday.
