Sorry , had to give up on it and switch over . I'm all for a bit of historical learning but that was to much . Sound, and visual effects were just a little to realistic . Or is it just me ?
have been told about it but not seen it thou doesn't interest me
rich
If you like nudity, sex, violence and fighting then it's of interest to you biggrin.
I can't see personally why it's squeamish though
There's much worse in Gladiator, Spartacus and probably Up Pompey too lol
bit more info please i didn't see it so dunno what your on about lol
Opened tonights episode by slicing his head open . Then drilled into his skull to perform presumably brain surgery . All to much for me so i switched off.
Think that would put anyone off if they are having a late meal. lol
I watched it and some of it made me feel quite squeamish.
I was thinking of posting a thread about whether you'd like to have lived in the days of the Roman Empire and what place you'd like to have occupied in society in those days.
There's a certain underlying darkness to Ancient Roman life which seems to run though this series but when you think about it, if you were able to look back on the present day from 2000 years in the future, would it not appear comparable? Mass murder through suicide terrorist bombings, wars, famine, strife, etc., etc.
Does anything really change?
dunno
I would've liked some of the sleazy and sexual side of it though! redface surprisedops:

That bit made me think "Oh, so this is the educational bit where they teach us about Roman surgical methods". Didn't seem any other plot reason for it.

Don't think you missed much - the sex was pretty awful. No passion or sensuality at all...

No. that was all three of them. wink
squeamish? I thought it was educational biggrin
Shame some of you swithced off I found some of the dialogue hilarious!
I loved this bit in the first episode ... "Would you like another doormouse, senator?"
and last night
"Women say they don't like it, but they do. Makes them wet as October..." lol
and the bit where the family of Caesar supporters were deciding who was going to kill whom to stop being by the mob trying to invade their house ... the girl demanding "I want mother to kill me" after an argument and the mother to her son "Darling who would you like to kill you?"
great stuff smile
Keep seeing mixed reviews.....think i will stick with 'I,Claudius' - classic!

They also talked about a little button just above it, which apparently sent the Roman women mad with desire (as if), but I suppose they can't get every little detail right in these period dramas.. dunno

Maybe it did exist in those days but it's been lost during evolution because it was redundant.

Yeah, but given the standard of the sex on show, for most women it would be the first time they'd ever had it touched in their lives, so maybe it was a little more sensitive in those days...
I was just talking to Sappho about this series - I didn't see last night's episode, I will have to wait for the re-run on Sunday.
Frankly, my views are a bit mixed. It is great fun and I really enjoyed the first episode - but it needs to be taken with an enormous pinch of salt (something much prized in Roman days, from whence we get the expression of someone being "worth their salt" and also, incidentally, the modern word 'salary' - but I digress).
There is a huge mixture here of historical fact, dramatic licence and downright speculation. Some of these have already been alluded to.
For example, the line "another dormouse, senator?" is surely only there to point out that the Romans ate dormice. This is completely true and well documented. A particular delicacy was stuffed dormice.
I remember from the first epsode a wedding with the bride being hidden behind a deep red veil. Again, perfectly accurate and well documented.
Other matters are far less reliable. 'Betrothal rights' are, at best, speculation - though not entirely out of keeping with the traditions of the time. Other sexual aspects are also largely dramatic licence, and quite possibly aimed at increasing viewing figures (though enormous fun  :twistedsmile. However, the Roman age of consent being around 13/14 is, as far as I can remember, about right.
I am quite sure that the family discussing who is going to kill who is another piece of pure speculation.
As I have said, this is fun to watch but my main criticism is that it is not at all clear (unless you happen to know already redface) what is historical fact and what is speculation or dramatic licence. So, please don't take this whole series as historical fact - it isn't.
However, I hope you all continue to enjoy it - and I am sorry if it is a little too gory for some of you. Fortunately, I have never been squeamish lol.
