why has the search function gone rubbish? Anyone else having problems or just me?
What part of search do you mean?
For a particular person on sh?
Or people that fit your criteria?
I think he's referring to the search facility on the photo ads as it now takes you to the ( new) search facility on the user menu....which is not the intended search.
I believe its the photo ads search, it's been replaced with the new "My Search" do dah and it doesn't seem to work properly.
Hi,
The new search is still in beta stages so could have bugs in it, let me know how it "doesn't work" specifically and I will take a look.
Alternatively submit a support ticket with the problem and how to reproduce it.
Nick
Nick,
if you go into Photo Ads and then the search option, it should allow you to search for ads by various criteria...it doesn't anymore, it now defaults to the new search option on the user menu..which is ( or used to be) a totally different search.
Hope this makes sense.
Hi,
The new search now has the ability to search adverts as well ( combined with profile details, which couldn't be done on the old advert search ).
Simply select "ads" under the "Search in" section, this also makes the advert category options available.
By default the new search searches both adverts and profiles, if the result is an advert match the advert will be displayed instead of the profile details.
You can view both profile and adverts details on a result by clicking the "Profile Details +" and "Adverts +" options respectively.
Nick
Ah, thanks for letting us know.
Nick
Just tried it and its not good!!
Under the old ad search, you could search say for a female looking for men, within a designated radius and it would bring back the ads in chronological order. You can not do that under the new search...unless I'm missing something. The results appear to be in random order timewise.
Also, once in the search results, it is impossible to conduct a new search as it just keeps bringing back the original search results. I had to logout to clear the problem. I gave up at that point...think it needs more work.
Could we please have the old search facility back on the photo ads... it worked fine IMHO.
Hi,
Use the link at the top of the page that says:
"to start a new search click here"
To start a new one, search results are held even after navgivating away from the results page because users requested it.
Adding another ordering option for "newest ads first" isnt a problem, will be done asap.
Apart from that the searches are the same apart from you can now combine profile options with advert options, to make it easier to find what you are looking for.
Nick
Sorry but, the new Photo Ads search sucks. It's much harder to find all the people advertising within a given distance. It was dead easy before but now I just give up and don't use the feature any more. :-(

Well thats OK, we don't all have to use the same way of finding fun. Try looking in the Lets Meet Up part of the forum or the rather nice chatroom
Maybe you can come back to the search feature once Nick has finished making changes and you can see if you get on any better with it later

Sorry but I don't quite see what you're saying. I just did a search for 'couples seeking couples', 'women seeking women' and 'women seeking men', within 20 miles of my postcode, and sorted by most recently updated. The results were what I expected (1,138 hits) and top of the list is a WSW, 17 miles from me, updated at 10:00pm. If it doesn't work for you send me a PM with the start of your post code and what you're lookng for and I'll see what happens when I try it.
Oh... and another thought: The new photo ads search lets you sort the results by the last time the user was on line. There are lots of people who posted an ad years ago, but never update it. In the old search those ads would just vanish into the mists of time. Now you can match up all those ads, which are probably still valid, with people who are on line now.
It gives the searcher lots more choice, and instantly puts your ads to the top of the list whenever you log into the site without you having to update it every day!

Really? I think the new search is one of the best changes to the site in recent times. You can now narrow your search to the finest detail, which you couldn't before (including distance from you), and the results numbers are updated instantly.
I've played with it a little, and tested it out, and so far I think it's brilliant. This is one of he rare occasions where a change has been made and I've had nothing but praise for it.
cool
Searching the photo ads. before took three mouse clicks - one to select all, two to select the distance and, three to hit the search button. Great! The new system involves making loads of decisions and mouse clicks and takes much, much longer each time I want to use it. This is not at all user-friendly and I find it very off-putting. Sorry but I think it is a backward step. sad

Well I just did that in 3 clicks:
1) Select distance
2) Select 'search in ads'
3) Hit search
And if you leave out the 2nd one you get ads and member profiles together in one list.
In fact, overall it's less effort. Before you had to click on 'photo ads', then on 'search' to get to the point where you could do your three clicks. Now you just have to click on My Search and you're there.
Sorry if you don't like it but IMHO it's a great step forward.
You mean I don't have to fill in all the boxes? I spent ages looking at them then trying to decide what to choose. It was a real pain but, if I can leave them blank then maybe that's not so bad. I'll maybe have another look.
How can you now tell whether a profile belongs to a premium member or a free member? It used to be one of the filter options on the previous search, but isn't on the new search. Perhaps the answer is that you can't tell anymore - which seems a backward step.
Related to that, I have been looking for, but unable to find, what free members can and cannot do. Can they, for example, send PMs or just winks? If you respond to an advert from a free member, can they reply to you - or are you just wasting your time?
Similarly, if you respond to a wink from a free member, can they reply to your PM?

Yep, if you want to see everyone then leave them all blank. If you're in a more discerning mood then you can pick and choose to suit your needs. biggrin
Oooh... Clever Clogs! biggrin
Trouble is that will probably be decomissioned soon now the new search is up and running. ;-)
Well done Atom! We did like the old system, although the new one does have some very good new features.
Maybe admin can keep both running?
II must agree that this new search has introduced too many mouse clicks.
Distance, side scroll bar downwards, couples seeking couples, scroll bar downwards, ads radio button, and search. More than the old 3 clicks ;-D
now a gripe that isn't just petulance ;-).
Why do I have to enable scripting to search? - it should be done serverside, leaving my system safe from trackers, trojans, viruses whatever. Having active scripting, dramatically lessens the security on my pc.
Otherwise, the new search is far more versatile, thanks.

FM's can send winks, cannot reply to one (unless another wink, tho winks are limited to so many per day) as they cannot send a pm.

Anais, many thanks. So, if a free member cannot reply to your PM, how do you identify that a member is a free member in order to avoid wasting your time by sending them a PM in the first place?
