I've looked elsewhere but can't find the answers I'm looking for.
DVD recorders.
I've noticed them coming down in price.
I've decided that I won't replace my VHS machine as and when it dies.
I don't have a VHS machine in the bedroom.
So . . . .
My questions are . . . . .
Have "they" solved the compatibility issues that were present with the early ones.
But more important - Can I jack straight from my camcorder into a DVD recorder the way I can with VHS.
The camcorder has firewire, s-video, PC (?), av and j-lip (?) sockets.
Or do I need to wait 12 months or so ?
I've not really looked at consumer DVD recorders, as if I wanted to record TV programs I'd probably use a hard disk based solution.
DVD recorders capable of dealing with both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW are certainly available for PCs as both " units (for normal desktops) and as slimline versions for small form factor PCs and laptops. Since your camera has firewire why not take the opportunity to edit footage on the PC before mastering it to DVD?
I'm just on my way out the door, but thanks so far.
DP, I'm asking about the dvd recorder/player things that go ubder the TV where the vhs machine lives.
Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
Hi DB
The compatibility problems are resolved in the latest recorders, in that most will record on all the formats (DVD-R & -RW, and DVD+R & +RW) Some will only record on one format, but play all of them. But check before buying of course!)
Some posh ones have a hard drive as well, to record onto, and should have all the connections under the sun, like S-Video, av, and firewire. And some are "combo" ones, where you have a VCR, hard drive and a DVD recorder all in one. And the good news is that they will be coming down in price further, as a whole new set of DVD players / recorders are coming out next year (for use with high definition tvs) .... meaning they have to get rid of the older models.
The bad news with the new generation of dvd players and recorders.... there are 2 types.... which are incompatible with each other... just like with VHS and betamax in the 80's.... Won'y "they" ever learn???
