The guy sounds great, and not crap, and it sounds as though you had a pretty good evening. Rather than thinking of it as a disappointment, I'd think of how to make it better next time. Perhaps talk the big boy into having a first shoot somewhere while you're still at the drinks stage, and then he'll be ready for more prolonged action when you are!
